THE WOES OP BDTTEKISE DEILERB Office of The Pittsburo Dispatch, Tuesdat, Dec 1G. ( Christmas Goods. It would lie difficult to discover any signs of a tight money market at the office of the East End and 'Wjlkinsburg Express Company on Seventh avenue. Such has been the pressure of business for a few days ttiat two teams were added to the 13 already at work in delivering packages to the East End. About 100 packages were delivered yesterday for a single Fifth avenue firm encaged in the Santa Claus trade. It is a low estimate to say that 1,000 packages are daily delivered by this company to East End firms and stores, and yet the big rush is to come as Christmas comes nearer. "With. 15 teams now engaged and the probability of one or two more being required before tbe week is out, it is plain that sou.e lines of busi ness must li flourishing The tov iirm that sent 100 packages to the East End yesterday, no doubt sent as many more to Allegheny and otner sections of the citv, not to mention the surrounding towns and cities which receive their supplies from Pitts bun:. All signs point to a larger distribution of Christmas presents here than ever before. The recent check :o the jcar's prosperity through financial stringency and decline of stocks w ill not prevent an extraordinary trade In Christmas goods. In spite of the mil Calvinism and Presby-teriam.-in of this section, the Chri-tmas holi day has become the great festal day of the rear, and whatever be the need ot economy, Santa Claus is ture to have a lively deinaud tor his goods. The time for economy comes, if it must, after the stockings are nlled and the ChriMmas tree is ornamented with things of beauty. Transgressors ays Hard. it doesn't pay to violate law, even if the law he obnoxious and unjust. The Pittsburg oleo dealers bae recently tnaae this discovery to their grief and loss. The Pcnnsjlvania law as to imitations of butter has boen a stupendous failure. Designed to protect rarmers and get their votes, it has, from its incipiency, been an utter failure. When six to eiclit carloads of oleo are weekly sold in Pittsburg, it is evident thit the law forbidding the sale in the State is a failure. The countryman and consumcr.who were s-upposed to be protected by the enactment, are proved by results to have been sutlerers. since country butter has been knocked out,and the consumer has been forced to pay better p-ices for that which is not from the cow. Within the past year a syndicate comprising four or five firms in this city joined together to defeat the law. and have been handling from six to eight loads ol oleomirgerine weekly for months past with a comfortable profit. The profits tn these firms have, at a low estimate, been JlO.Oui per month. Some estimates place the nrnhts at double that amount. Within the past two weeks Uncle Sam's de tectives have been looking up these violations of law, and from latest accounts the transgressors will be only too glad to disgorge all their profits, if ibis will save them f i om a w or.se calamity. Said a Liberty street commission merchant yesterday: "A government detective was in my warenousca fen dais ago to ascertain if I dejlt in butter imitations. I lias happy to tell him that inj butter trade had left me, though jt had been at a decrease of traue. A few years ago iny butler trade was large: but since oleo came in I have found no profit in handling country butter and so have quit it altogether. The average consumers seems sat isfied with the imitations, and so not desiring to be a law breaker I have retired from the butter trade altogether." It is rumored that a compromise has been made between the Government representatives and the oleo syndicate by which the principal part of tbe profits is surrendered and further prosecution ceases. It is understood that tho Chicago manufacturers are to bear tbe losses, according to agreement with dealers in their contraband goods. Two things have been demonstrated so far by thR workings of the law. first It has failed entirely in its purpose. Hecoud Transgressors of the law have been brought to see that it didn't pay. The Eeal Estate Easiness Active by Com parison With Former Years. A KEW WAI TO SETTLE AN ACC0D5T It is an old saying that it's an ill wind that blows nobody good. The outcome of the Liberty street fire may be highly advan tageous to that thoroughfare. The rebuild ing or remodeling of all the old-time build ings in that quarter of thecitv is only a question of time. Business is increasing at such a rate that better accommodations and facilities for its transaction are imperatively demanded. The buildings destroyed by the fire will be replaced by others of modern de sign, and this, it is believed, will stimulate other owners to improve their proper ties. In fact, several owners have already expressed themselves to this effect. The great fire at Chicago turned out to be the best thing for that city that could have happened, and it is permissible io say that it is highly probablo the same favorable re sult may proceed from tbe Liberty street con flagration, wbicn at tbe time seemed to bave no redeeming quality. Only Taking In Sail. Tbero is nothing remarkable in tbe fact tbat real estate shows a lack of tbe aggressive force and energy which characterized it during tbe spring and fall months. This is tbe season of tbe year for taking in sail in all lines of trade preparatory to tbo annual reckoning, and real estate Is no exception. But it sbould not be argued from tins tbat it is flat on Its back. Sales reported from day to day disprove this. The fact i: that tbe market in comparison with former years at tbe same season is decidedly active. The lull. If such it may be called, which has settled down upon tbe real estate market. Is not duo to want of confidence or diminished demand, bnt to causes which havo affected, in some degree, every other interest, and will be of brief continuance. Real estate is so deeply rooted in public necessity that it will always maintain a high position among the other great interests of Pittsburg. w A Collector Bluffed. An Incident occurred a few days ago which was a novelty in business matters. A merchant who had closed up without liquidating for goods purchased during his days of good credit was stopped on tbe street by tbo salesman of the house from whom be purchased, and a re quest made to settle. He stated he could not. "Well, why don't you say you never will pay itT That is what you meant" exclaimed tbe col lector, in a lond and angry tone. The debtor colored, and his fingers worked nervously. "Look here," be said: "you sold metbose goods and your bouse sbonld havo their pay, and I ac knowledge yon bave some personal griovance as salesman, and, wbile I have not the money. I can at least satisfy your personal trouble. You size up pretty well physically, and so do I; sup pose we step down to the river and take it out there." This was a new way ot liquidating. Tbe talesman declined with thanks, and lett the debtor master of the situation. Business News and Gossip. NEW YORK STOCKS. Stock Market Lower on Account of the Ac tion of the Foreigners Money Rapidly Getting Back to Its Normal -Condition. New York, Dec. 1U. The London market was lower this morning principally, so far as any interests on this side are affected. There were rumors of a withdrawal of gold from Lon don by both tbe Bank of Berlin and the Bank of France, all of wbirh made the forcignerssellers at the opening this morning. Domestic opera tors were also sellers of stocks bought in the expectation that the announcement of tbo re sult of the Presidents' meeting would create a boom in securities, and as all wanted to sell at once and the market seemed utterly devoid of support, prices yiolded easily, and the day was one of continuous decline from the opening to tbe close. Many stop orders were uncovered and cov ered; tho narrowness of tbe market was still its most conspicuous feature, and dullness marked the trading during most of the after noon. Tbe downward movement made fair progress and .the losses at tbe lov est prices ex tended to about 3 per cent. Lackawanna was tbe only stock tbat gave evidence of any sup port at all, and tbat for only a short timo in the afternoon. Tbe close was steady atter a slight rally from the lowest figures.
