TIIE SEWS A-D GOSSIP OF THE C1TI
Business started off at a brisk pace yester
day. There was no discouraging news, but,
on the contrary, everything was reassuring.
The banks reported good supply of funds,
and holders showed more willingness to
lend than for several weeks. Scarcely a
doubt remains that the money supply will
soon be ample for all purposes. January
disbursements will put several millions in
circulation, which w ill go a lone way toward
easing the market and increasing the vol
ume of trade. Stocks were stronger, aud
even petroleum showed sins of animation.
The stores were well patr-mized by seekers
ot holiday Koods. Tver body was cheerful as
ir they ltilly realized that the clouds were roll

HOME SECUEITEES,
Price-. 'Were Sustained Electric and Phila
delphia Gas Make Further Gains.
Stock trading was of comparatively small
dimensions yesterday, only 193 shares changing
bands. There was a liberal supply of buying
oraers, bnt no special cffoit was made to place
them, nor was there any pressure to sell. It
v.as noticed that some of last week's sellers
were amoi.e the bidders.
While prices throughout, with one or two ex
ceptions, were well sustained. Philadelphia Gas
and Electric, which bore the brunt of last
week's raid, were decidedly stronger, both
fcorinc material gains and closing at the best
prices of the day.

No New Features, bat a Steady Improve
ment Taking Place.
Althouch there were no new features in the
local money market yesterday there were many
indications of a freer movement as a result of
returning confidence. Regular customers bad
no difficulty to obtain all tho funds they
wanted, and somo outside paper was dis
counted. This would have been impossible a
week or ten davs ago. Rates were unchanged.
Bank clearing were 12,102,549 Go, and balances

Tho fact that tho Clearing House Associa

because they could see no necessity for such
action.

IVall Street Concerned Over the Sleeting of
tho Railroad Presidents, the General
I1npressi1.11 lielng That a Favorable
Result "Would be Arrived At.
New Yoek, Dec 15. The great concern in
Wall street was the conference of railroad
Presidents. The impression prevails that a
favorable result will be arrived at. Confidence
is gradually returning aud money lenders are
more inclined to do business. The" reappear
ance of time money places brokers in a position
where they can rocommend;buying on margin,
and commission houses are therefore
roady now to buy stocks for their
customers. The market to-day was a
dull and sluggish one, the general
disposition being to await tho outcome of tho
Presidents' meeting before doing anything in
tbc market, and narrowness also marked the
dealings from the same cause. The demand was
very light, tho shorts having covered to a large
extent during the final days of last week, and
that support to the market was lacking, while
Loudon and all classes of operators were wait
ing. The London figures, however, were
materially higher, and our market opened
from H to 1 per cent better, in sympathy with
it, but the lack of demand after the first buying
movement had been satisfied, which raised
prices from Ji to per cent over the opening,
and there was a sagging movement which lasted
throughout the greater portion of the day,
wip.ng out most of the advances over Sat
urday's final figures.
There w ere a few specially strong spot, how
ever, among which .Missouri Pacihc. Wheel
ing and Lake Erie preferred and a few others
were prumtnent. Tbc great feature of the
day was the sharp advance in silver certificates
trom 105 to 110 on the prospect that there will
be purchased the $13,000,000 silver in the coun
try together with the possible utilization of
the fractional silver, besides the prospectof
other legislation which is considered favorable
by the silver men. The advance was not all
held, but it closed at near tho top, Another
sharp advance was made br La Clede gas
which was started by the decision of the Su
preme Court of Missouri, in favor of the com
pany, w hich allows it tu charge 1 25 per 1,000
instead of i0 cents ai fixed by the city council
last year. It touched 17against 12 last Satur
day and closed at 17.
The market dwinuled away to the smallest
proportions in the afternoon, but a little buy
ing in the last few minutes closed it with a
steady to firm tone at about the opening prices
lor most stocks. The final changes are almost
all advances, though generally for insignificant
fractions, but beside tbo advances in La Clede
Gas and silver certificates Wheeling and Lake
prcfenedisupSJi. Pacific 3Iail 1, Northern
Pacific preferred i. Missouri Pacific 1 and
Canada Southern 1 percent. Railroad uonds
showed the usual moderate business, which
reached 1.255,000 for the day, and whilo a
raiher heavy tone prevailed in the earlv trad
ing a stronger tone was developed in the after
noon, resulting in marked advances iu many of
the more active issues. Mobile and Ohio 4s
rose 2. to 6; Northern Pacific and Montana
firsts 22. to 102K; San Francisco 64 2. to 108;
Iron Mountain 5s 2JJ, to 91, aud Wabash de
bentures, class. B, 2 to 32,
Government bonds have been d oil and steady.
State bonds have been quiet and featureless.

light and all signs point to even higher prices

HOPE JOB BORDER CLAIMS.
Some of the Democratic Leaders Will Vote
for the Measure.
Henry Hall, ol Mercer, was in the city for
a short time yesterday before leaving for
Butler, where he lectured last night. He
had just come from Washington, aud had
been attending n meeting of the Border Baid
Commission. The object was to gthe bill
be.'ore the House during tbe short session,
and Mr. Hall thinks if this can be done the
E resent Congress will pass it The
ill calls lor $3,500,000 to reimburse
the losses of people along the border in
curred by rebel raids. Their claims were
adjudicated, and the State gave them cer
tificates under the hope that Uncle Sam
would pay them.
Mr. Hall said that Speaker Eced was
against the measure, but he was willing to
bring up the bill this session. It was con
sidered yesterday by "the Committee on
Rules. Cannon, the Chairman of the Ap
propriation Committee, is hostile to the bill,
but McMillen undBlouut, two of the Dem
ocratic leaders, favor it. They are inter
ested in similar bills- to repay people in
Kentucky and Tennessee, and, of course,
will not be governed by party lines.

2,000 pounds, designed for the Christmas mar
ket. Tbe number of hogs on sale was 3S2 head,
all of which were from Ohio and told at a ranee
of 3c to 4c per lb. Sheep sold at 5c to 5c and
lamb s from 5 60 to 6 75, the latter price being
paid for extra prime lambs, weighing 95 lbs.
The number of sheep and lambs on the mar
ket as 493 head.
Receints ot cattle at East Liberty were
about 135 loads against 230 last week. Of those
received a very small proportion were light
smooth butcher stock, weighing from 1.1C0 to
1.200 lbs., such as our trade calls for. General
qnality was below average. Tbe expense of
wintering is so great that lean kine are shoved
onto the markets in unusually large quanti
ties. Commission men varied in their views as to
markets. One. reported good light butchers'
beeves at 10 to 15c stronger than last wee-, and
others reported them steady at last week's
prices. All agreed that common and low
crades were off and markets very dnll at tho
decline.
The range of markets for good stock was
quoted at 1 25 to 4 75. but no sales could be
traced at the latter figure.
Tbo offerings of sbeeD and lambs were about
15 car loads against 20 or more last Monday.
Good stock being in short supply, markets wero
strong for this grade at last Monday's prices,
and barely steady for common and low grado
stock. Top price lor sheep was 5c and lambs
6c per pound.
There were between 60 and 70 loads of hogs
on tho market, and quality was a good averaze.
Top price of Philadelphias was 3 65 to $3 70,
very few reaching the latter figure. Yorkers
ranged from 3 30 to 3 50. Markets opened
slow and weak at these figures. According to
advices recoived from a Chicago buyer, receipts
there to-day were 30,000 head and top prices
from $3 50 to 3 60 per hundred.

A Bullish Tone In the Wheat, but -org
Offers Weaken Values Corn and
Oats Lose Ground Provisions
Fairly Active and Unsettled.
CHICAGO Tbe wheat business to-day gave
unmistakable signs of an underlying sentiment
of strong bullish tendencies pervading the
crowd, Tbe opening prico for May, 1 01
1 01, was about c higher than the closing
prico on SatuVday. The immediate cause of
the advance was the firm tone of tbe cable ad
vices and a marked advance in tbe price of sil
ver at New York. There was likewise
a continuation of Saturday' expecta
tion of a decrease in the visible supply.
The price fluctuated for half an hour between
1 01U and 1 00, and then an advance to
101 took place, the last half of which was
too rapid tu permit of much business while it
was In progress. There was any quantity for
sale as soon as this nervous uujing ievernaa
abated, anu several circumstances conspired to
bring around in a short time a reversal of the
early course of the market. Tbe declino u hich
followed the first advance rednccd the prico of
May to 1 00. It reacted to 1 01K, but once
more declined to 1 00. at which price it
closed with an easy tone.
Corn was inactive and closed at c lower than
on Saturday. There are indications of increas
ing receipts in the near future and the present
mild weather Is not an encouragement to
prices. ilv corn opened at 53c. with some
sales at 53c and one or two iransatclont at
53c, and the sales made, at that time were at
tbe top prices of tho day. Them was a decline
to 53c and a reaction to 53J53c in the first
half hour, after which heaviness was the fea
ture of the trade and a decline to 52c was the
result. This was succeeded by a reaction to
52c at which there were sellers, as tbe market
closed steady.
Tho extremely Small stocks in sight hinder
sales, although a very general opinion pre
vailed among local operators that present
prices arn at least 5 or 6c higher than is other
wise warranted by the situation.
Heavy liquidation in oats, superinduced by
heavy estimates for to-morrow, caused a de
cline of lc in prices. Several brokers from tbe
corn pic turned in and raided the market tgud
ingmaterial assistance to the bears. Hutchinson
was the heaviest seller. The May deal opened
at 45JJC, or 'ia lower, declining to 41Kc and
fluctuating between that price and'44X': for a
time. Then the raid began, and the market
wpnt off to 43Jc, and some was sold as low as
i$ic It afterward recovered to 44Jc but
another decline occurred, carrying the price
flown to 41c. The market closed at HJc bid.
Mess Pork A fairly active trade was re
ported, and prices ruled irregularly within a
moderate range. Opening sales were made at
57)c decline, but fair buying tended to
strengthen the marker, and prices rallied 12
15c. Later prices settled back 710c
Toward tbe close prices rallied 1517c, and
closed comparatively steady.
Lard A fairly active business was reported.
Early sales were made at a slight decline, but
later prices improved 57c, and closed steady
at outside figures.
Short Rib Sides The trading was fair. Early
firices ruled about 2c lower. During the
atter part of the session prices advanced 5
7c and closed steady.

TEUHK LUTES MOST LIBERAL,
They Will Sell Excursion Tickets on Any
Day Daring the Holiday Season.
The sale of holiday excursion tickets will
not begin before the 24tb, and they will be
good to return until January 5. The trunk
line roads show great liberality this year, and
will sell tickets on any day during the
excursion period. The roads in the Central
Traffic Association will sell them on the
24th, 23th, 31st aud Janucry L The usual
time allowed for these excursion tickets is
up to January 2, and at the meeting of the
Central Traffic Association, General Passen
ger Agent Clark, of the Lake Erie,
moved that it be extended to
Janpary 5. He said he knew that the
trunk line roads would fix such a limit,
and as his line was out of Pittsburg he did
not want to appear stingy. At his request
the agents agreed to extend the time.
Mr. Clark said yesterday that the Central
Traffic people could never agree on the days
of sale and the limit of the excursion tickets.
He strongly favors the liberality of the
trunk lines, and thinks the other roads
should adopt the same policy. The rate is
tbe same in bath associations, about a fare
and a third.
The Lake Erie this year has placed a
large picture of an owl with a porous plas
ter on his stomach on tbc posters to call
attention to holiday excursion rates. Mr.
Clark says the scarcity of money is affect
ing tbe passeuger traffic, and, while the local
travel is good, tbe through business
amounts to scarcely anything.
STJBE SIGNS OF BUSINESS.
The American Express Puts on an Extra
Force of Men.
M. E. Valliant, of the American Express
Company, was an exceedingly well pleased
man yesterday. "I have been in Pittsburg
for eight years," he said, but I never bad
such a big Monday's business. The num
ber of packages going is very large and it
surely shows tbat the people have money.
"There are conic, ol course, who will'give
Christmas presents, regardless of the times,
but when a man is pinched he will look to
the necessaries of life first. I have put on
an extra force of men to handle the traffic."
