vm'MimA ivsffWm THE PITTSBURG DISPATCH. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 189a 3 FOR LAW AND ORDER. Members of the International League Meet at a Uanquet. OBSERVING THE SAliBATH DAY. Easiness That Was Transacted bj ihe Contention Yesterday. MOKE STKIXtiEXT UMTS CALLED FOU 2Tearly 200 members of the International Law and Order League and their lady friends were entertained at a banquet last night at the Seventh Avenue Hotel by the Pittsburg League. There was a very fine menu, and it is hardly necessary to say that anything stronger than water did not figure thereon. Previous to the banquet there was a recep tion in the parlors. Among those who at tracted much attention was the venerable Edward Everett Hale, whose entertaining talk kept him constantly surrounded. In the banquet hall the guests were ar ranged along two tables extending nearly the length ot the room. Major W. B. Neg Icy, who presided, wjs seated in the center of one, on his right being Jndge Bonney, President of the Chicago League, and who was toastmaster; while on his left was Mr. Hale. Next to Judge Bonney was John M. Langston, the well-known colored Vir ginian. WELCOME AND RESPONSES. After prayer by Rev. Mr. McGlory, the guests devoted themselves to the feast. Then Judge Xegley made the address ot wel come. He claimed that much had been done through the aid of the society in Western Pcnn.Ivania to make tlie Sunday such as the law intended that it should be. He also paid a compliment to Chief Brown, of the Department of Public Safety, whom, he said, was dome much toward shaping the city into proper lines. Major Bund, of Montreal, responded on be half of tne Dominion in a semi-linmorous man ner. In speaking of a closer political relation he said that he did not believe Canadians warned annexation, nor did the United States wih it. There was too much loyalty across the border for any such move, both among the En-glis-h and the French population. As to reci jtociU lie believed that the Canadians were looking forward to the time when something of that kind would con-.e, and he trusted it might be the beginning of a creator amalgamation of all English-speaking people. Alter this address a quartet sang "God Save the Queen." the banqueters rising. Judre Bonney, President of the Chicago local Law and Order Society, followed on be half nf the United States. During the short address he said he hoped the day was coming when there would be not only reciprocity in temperance and virtue, but also in more material matters. Heterring to the work of the league he said it was only the su premacy of the law that would prevent fire, rapine "and murder. He thought the fate of civil and religious liberty is now in danger in this country. He criticised the errors ot the leaders of political parties, who forgot that the league was going to be a new political balance of ioier. At the conclusion of this speech the audience sang, ".My Country Tis of the Thee." "When Bad Men Conspire Good Men Must Combine," was the subject of the address of Rev. Edward Everett Hale. Satan, he said, served the servants of the Lord. The league tas engaged in a contest against the politics of the country jnst as the free soilers were en gaged in a contest against the slave holders. Thrliq nor power is something Immense and there is need of combination to fight it. When people denounced what they termed the Puritan Sabbath tbev apparently knew not of what they talked. God give us law in liberty and libertv In law. Arthur M. Burton, President of the Law and Order Society of Philadelphia, spoke of its work in that city. Owing to the lateness of the hour all the ad dresses were short. The other speakers were Mr. lancston. Colonel L. E. Dudley and Walter T. Mills. THE riEST SESSION INFOIiMAL. While the attendance at the morning session of the ninth annual convention of the Inter national Law and Order League was not large tnere being not 20 delegates present it was or a representative character, most of those preent being men of national reputation, such as Edward Evei ett llale.tlie literatenr; Colonel 1. .nin Dudley, a wen-Known veteran; Major K. L. Bond, ot Montreal, and President Bonney. of Chicago. The first se:sion at the Y. M. C. A. chapel was of an informal character. Ilev. David Mc Allister delivered a short prayer, alter which President Bonney said that the objects of the meetings were twofold. The Law ana Order League represents the sovereignty of the peo ple and the law. The leagues were created to show to the people that the suptemacyot the law is necessary to the perpetuity of free gov ernments and republic. Incidentally the Law and Order Leagues interfered to secure a bet. ter discharge of the laws wheu the officials in the countrv allow them to be abused. The re sults have been of the most ratifying charac ter in the United States and Canada. The speakers of the morning were Major Bond, Rev. Dr. McAllister and President Bon ney, all of whom dwelt at length on the amount of good work done by the law and order socie ties In the past and what the expect to accomplish- in 'he future. A SHORT HrSIXESS MEETING. The business meeting of the International Convention or the Law and Order League was held jesterday afternoon in the chapel of the Yoang Men's Christian Association. The meeting was opened with short devotional ex ercises, after which Dr. Crafts arose and deliv ered an address. His remarks were in part a repetition of those made at the closing session of the Sabbath Reform Asso ciation held in the Eighth Reformed Presbyterian Church Wednesday night. At the close of his remarks Dr. Crafts was honored by being elected Secretary ot tho In ternational Law and Order League" Captain Richardson, of the Trenton, N. J., society, was then called npon to give the report of hisdistnct. He said their organization had been in existence six years, and emphatically s ated that he old nut believe a stranger could get a driuk. of rum from a saloon on Sunday -within the ruy limits ot Trenton. Captain Wihart bext gave the report ol his district. lie said there was a much better ob servance of the S.ibbath now than formerly, and that the prosecutions made by the society during the hrstyear after its organization were su effective that there were now very few pros ecution", and the saloon keepers and others were strictly obeing the law. Mr. Gjger. of Philadelphia, was called upon for the report for his district. He was the originator of the Philadelphia society. He said that in their work out ot 1,000 spcak-easles the first j ear thev closed w of them. He favored the Brooks law. as he declared that the number of saloons in Philadelphia under the Brooks law had been reduced from8,000tol 300. He said that the people of the Law and Order societies should have backbones like steel and not like shoestrings, that they may no't be swerved from the purpose they have in view He said that most men obev the law notbel cause they love it, but because they are obliged to for self-preservation. He further stated that in Philadelphia the jury system seemed to be decided y in their favor, as they had won verdicts in eight out of cverv ten cases tried. Mr. Burton, of Philadelphia, then arose, and during the course of his remarks, said that the number of arrests in Philadelphia the first vear after the establishment of their society was de creased b.O0u. The second vear the number dropped 4.000 under that of the previous vear making a total decrease of nearly 13.000 in two years. In conclusion, he said that in a city where 53.009 arrests were made every vear, the results thus far attained were very" encour aging. Dr. Crafts was given until the next meeting to draw up in tho form of a resolution a mo tion made by him that the league adopt meas ures to prosecnte ofheers of the law who do not enforce the law. Shilok'b Cube will immediately relieve croup, whooping couirh and bronchitis. Sold by Jos. Fleming fc Son. 112 Market st. For ITet "Weather Ladies should try a pair of C. A.
