t. THE PITTSBURG DISPATCH. THURSDAY, NOVEMBER ,13, 189G, 3 . : FARMERS' HARD LUCK. Allegheny County Agriculturists Making Ko Money This Year. HAT COSTS MORE THAN IT IS WORTH City Sportsmen and Their Dogs Harrj the Cattle and Sheep. POTATOES KOTTIKG IN TOE GEODKD There seems to be no balm in Gilead for Allecheny county farmers this year. Truck farmers declare that there was no money in it for them, and other kinds are in worse shape. They haTe no fruit, and some didn't eren haTe gumption enough to plant pump kins, and so supply the deficiency in part. Corn and oats are almost iailnres, and raisers hare been clad to get the cost of work out of the crop without any other con sideration, and many of them did not get that. Milk producers say they can barely make ends meet when thev Ret 10 cents gallon and pay 2 cents freight Several say the only profit they hare had the past year was the improvement of their farms in fertility in consequence of feeding the product on the ground. There is money in potatoes sometimes, but this year the yield is small, and it looks as tbongh the crop will not be harvested. The fields are mudholes, and the tubers taken out when the ground is in that condition are in bad shape. CAN'T STOr THE MACHINE. Tbit old Philadelphia patriarch, who, in the latter part of 1888, prophesied two years' rain, seems unable to put the cork in again after getting the machine started, borne farm ers are talking of leaving their potatoes in the ground until spring, thinking they will get the f rnit In better shape then. Hay was tlie only crop that was a success, and at pi esent price paid will not cover cost of bnnclneitto market. The best baled hay is quoted at HO a ton. Loose is worth from 51 to $3 a ton more, but it will not pay to transport it by wagon at tbat price, as the roads are so nearly impassable that navigation on them is exceedingly perilous. Farmers living within eight miles of the citv and witbin a mile of a railroad are having their hay baled, and here is the approximate cost of getting a ton of hay to market, and it should be borne in mind that it is all tho average Allegheny county farmer has to sell this year. A ton and a half of hay to the acre is a good average crop in this county, and al lowing that yield, the cost account stands in an acre's produce as follows: Interest on cost of land. Jb: fertilizer at least E2: catting, curing and stacking. 1 12: baling, fS: feed for four horses belonging to Daler, GO cents 5 rents a ton: assistance furnished by nay owner. thec men. H 50 per day and dav's work eicht tons 56 cents: board of balers. 75 cents; freight. SI 50; seller's commission, 75 cents; total. 14 6i. This leaves the farmer 39 cents' margin for hauling 3,000 pounds of havtnthe railway sta tion, for he must ship it this way if be hopes to come out even, ls he cannot get a ton hauled over the Soutbside roads eight wiles for less than $7. four horses being required to do it. THE FAEMEKS ABE PUZZLED. If his bay be up to the standard he will get 15 for the produce of an acre, and what the farmer would like to find is an arithmetician who can figure cost of production of the crop out of present prices. This state of affairs ex plains why hay stacks are at present as thick in Western Pennsjlvania as stars in the firma wnt. Judge Fettcrman talked of buying a flock nf sheep to eat his hay so that thereby he wnuld keep his farm fertile, but shooters and their dogs are so much of a nuisance at present, that it is doubtful whether such sensitive animals would thrive. Farmers who have tried feeding cattl say that all there is in it is the improved fertilization of their land. It goes without saving, that there mnst be a change of seme kind ere long, or Allegheny countv fields will be allowed to grow second growth forests as worn-out Virginia tobacco lands have done and there seems to be a field for the exercise of both statesmanship and agricultural chemistry. TltlKlDAD. Col., is said to be attracting the attention of some of the leading glass manu lacturers of the Pittsburg, Wheeling and other class manufacturing centers in the more Eastern States. They have an im mense deposit of finest sjnd r.ntl silica, to gether with an abundance of all the facilities needed for the production and marketing of the goods, including the great railroad svs tems of the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe, and Union Pacific, and other sr.tems for transporting goods to market in every direc tion.
