VedM"SDAY. October 2), ISM. (
There have been on sale at the East Lib
ertv stock yards in all about ISO carloads of
cattle this week, against 150 loads last week.
As our local trade calls for not much above
100 carloads it was plain from tbe stirt
that the situation was in favor of the buyer.
Bayers mere present in fair force, but were
slow to catch on, seeing their advantage
from the big run. The miserable weather
which has prevailed all the week was also
a favorable factor to tbe buyer. Markets
opened weak on Monday luonuns. and have
kept on in this line ever since. The only grade
of cattle which beld its own were light, tidy
butcher beeves ar.d first-class feeders.
Of tbe latter there c-c very few offeicd.
Everything below prime stock was dull and
slow at a decline from last week's prices. Theie
wcietwoloartbof good report cattle, nearly
prime, weighing alont 1.500 pounds, which
brought H 60, tho hicho-t price realized this

Buyers were present ready to gather in all of
these kinds of cattle that were offered. But
anvthing offered that was below par went beg

by liberal concessions. A goodly number of
these common and low-grade cattle were sent
on in first hands.

The receipts this week were about 16 car
loads. Quality was much the same as it has
been rr a number of weeks past. The propor
tion of choice stock- was small. Markets were
slow at a decline of 10 to 15c per cwt. on sheep
andst'ong -oc on lambs. The best price ob
tained for siieep was 5c per lb, and for lambs
f-5 S5. The outside figures were obtained fnr a

market on Monda. a small proportion of
which were good cornfed stock. Markets
were slow at a decline from last week. Siuce

being frequent within a lc range. The in

soon satisfied, longs began to unload and a de

Oats The market was rather quiet with a
lighter volume of trade aud a nai rower range
of prices. There was a fair demand early, the
first trading being at sligbtlv advanced prices.
Later, on fair selling, prices receded Kc, bnt

noticeable, and the trading was light. Prices
were irregular. Opening sales were made at

prices settled back 710c and closed steady.
Lard Trading was moderate. Opening sales
weio made at 2H'c decline, but this was quickly
recovered. Later the leeling was easier and
prices receded 2Ji5c, and the market closed

THE NEWS AND GOSSIP OP THE CITY
Another plan of lots will soon be ready
for the market. Eeed B. Coyle yesterday
closed the tale to Wood, Harmon & Co. of a
body of land containing about 50 acres for
a price approximating $80,000. It is sit
uated at Sheridan station, on the Pan
handle Railroad, and is convenient to the
business centers, being only a little over
four miles from Union station, and there
fore well adapted to residence purposes.
It commands a fine view of the Ohio
river and both cities. The Panhandle is
constructing extensive yards in the vicinity
and is making other important improvements
all of which will add to its attractions for
home-seekers. The purchasers will subdivide
and put the property on the market at once.

The Retail 4Trade an Important Factor In
Business Statistics.
Activity in the retail branches of trade is
an important factor in maintaining tbe volume
of business at its present high level and in sus
taining the high character of the Clearing
House reports. As thus reflected, it Is clearly
seen that it hat grown to bs a very important
interest. Nothing shows in a truer light tbe
great prosperity of Pittsburg. There can be no
cause for alarm so long as people have plenty
or money to spend for home comforts ana
necessities.
The money market was a shade easier yester
day, if there was any change at all. Funds are
returning from the West and South a""?""

doing in speculation. Recent additions to the
stock of operating capital l;om these and other
sources are considerable, and legitimate inter

require.
Loans wero freelv made 'yesterday on the
basis of 67 per cent on call and time, and
there was less discrimination against outsiders
or occasional borrowers than has been the rule
of late, indicating a good snpoly of funds. Jkx

that direction.

KEW YORK STOCKS,
The Sharp Rally in Sugar Refineries Booms
the General Market Until an Attack
on the Burlington Takes the
Wind Out of It.
New York, October 29. The stock market
to-day showed no material change in its gen
eral characteristics from those of the past few
dajs, and there was the samo professional
trading, the apparent willingness of the large
holders of stocks to let them take care of them
selves and the same disregard in its movements
of the influences which should legitimately
tend to the enhancement of values. .The goo.
eral list, as usual, was dull and comparatively
stagoant, while the efforts of tbe operators for
a decline were directly applied to a few stocks,
which proved specially vulnerable, and in those
shares material losses were suffered.
Again tbe talsity of tbe stories of financial
difficulties in London were disproved by the
passing off of the settlements without failure
of any kind, although it was stated that assist
ance had to he accorded in some cases. Lon
don, however, was not a factor in any way in
this market, and the opera tidns for London ac
count were few and confined to arbitrage oper
ations almost entirely. On the other hand,
Boston was a heavy seller, and the stocks In
which it is most Interested were most specially
weak.
Tbe announcement of the decrease in the net
earnings of the Burlington for September was
followed by a sharp attack upon that and the
other Grangers, which brought prices down to
tbe lowest of the day, and in many cases to the
lowest seen in months. Sugar Refineries, after
atharp upward movement in the forenoon,
which seemingly bad tbe effect of postponing
the attack upon the general list until tho alter
noon, remained dull and featureless, but was
held at the bestprices for the remainder o the
day. Chicago Gas fell away in the forenoon
about 1 per cent, but tbe announcement of tbe
decision from Chicago that the company had
no right to buy or to bold the stocks of tbe
other companies was received with apparent
indifference, and the stock recovered all of its
loss with the remainder af the list. St. Paul
was' one of the weak stocks, and showed less
reenperative power than tbe rest of the Grang
ers, notwithstanding the favorable nens from
the West. Tbe latter, however, was of some
influence upon Union Pacific wbicb was well
held in the forenoon, and later displayed con
siderable strength.
The opening was made at irregular changes
from last night's figures, and the early trading
developed a continuance of tho depression of
last evening; but tbe sharp rally in Sugar ear
ned the list along with it, and but little further
weakness was seen during the forenoon. The
raid upon the Grangers after 12 o'clock, how
ever, took the vim out ot the market, and the
lowest prices of the day all along the line were
reached at about 1 P. M.. and when the pressure
was removed dullness and stagnation wero the
features until the last hour, when covering of
shorts again moved prices up, and in most cases
the final figures are only slightly below thoso of
the opening, the close being firm at the im
provement: St. Paul touching 55. closing at
"56, a loss of 1, and Northern Pacific pre
ferred is off 1 per cent. The remainder of the
changes are generally small losses, though
Sugar and Union Pacific both are fractionally
higher. Railroad bonds were more active, but
out of the 51,371,000 of business, Texas Pacific
seconds furnished 5270.000. The latter were weak
throughout, and the general market displayed a I
neavy tone, mougii wniie were are a majority
of losses the final changes are still generally
for insignificant amounts.
Government bonds have been dull and steady.
State bonds hare been dull and without
feature.
The -Post says: Money was tight in Boston
to-day, and for that as well as for other reasons
Boston was a seller of stocks. Tbe selling ex
tended also to tbe copper stocks and tbe local
securities. The announcement that the 59,000,
000 of Oregon ana Transcontinental bonds, due
on Saturday, November 1, would be paid upon
presentation on Friday, the 31st, aid a great
deal to relievo apprehensions of a pinch in
money on Friday for loans to go over till the
next Monday, because if the money had been
held over until Saturday (which Is not refused
to any extent), it wonld havo withdrawn that
large amount from the market from Friday
until Monday. There are, however, various in
dications that money will soon be much easier
in this market. The return of currency lrom
tbe interior has certainly begun, and we bear
of one bank (Fourth National), which, in the
last two days has received 52,000,000 from tbe
Interior.

Country 'Produce Jobbing Prices.
Weather has been adverse to trade all tbe
week. It would be hard to conceive of any
thing worse in lines of weather than what we
have been having for the past few days. Cold
rains have been almost incessant, and buyers
are very naturally inclined to come ont of doors
as little as possible. Grapes and apples are too
plenty for demand, and markets are weak.
Tropical fruits are auiet, with the exception of
lemons, which are firm. There will be little
show for bananas aud oranges until the grape
crop is worked oil. Choice potatoes are firm at
quotations. Sweet potatoes, and, in fact, vege
tables generally, are dull and slow. Demand
is good for choice creamery buttor aud strictly
fresh eggs.

Lumber.
Tbere is no abatement in activity of building
lumber. We note an improvement iu demand
for hard wooes the past week or two which is
easily explained by tho fact tbat demand in this
line always increases toward tbe close of the
season when the inside finish is being pnt on
buildings. Cherry and quartered oak are the
popular bard woods. It is difficult to meet de
mand for cherry.
