ROADS FOR FARMERS.
Lateral Bailroads Along Streams the
Latest Project to
BRING FARMS SEAR THE CITT.
Cheap Freights on These Lines Would Make
farmers Happy.
MXKI EOADS THAT CHARGE BIG BATES
"With hades flooded anil Auld Clootie
floundering up to his armpits, it will not be
a matter ot astonishment should the attend
ance at to-day's convention of county road
improvers be light, as only amphibians can
be comfortable just now.
But tnere is one thing that would give
some relief in case good roads cannot be
secured in all sections, and that is the con
struction of lateral railways along the course
of the principal streams f allinc into our rivers
hereabouts. It is said that one is projected
down Monn run from its source, and one In
each valley would enable people to come to
and from the city, and few farmers would
then be more than to miles from a rail
way. Such a system woula bring all
the countrv roundabout to the doors
ot the city. "The matter is of more interest to
the fanners than to the city, but the latter will,
tin to a cent, be unable to sec it, i. c, as a
class. Within sight of tbe city are thousauds
of tons of hav which will cost more to get into
it than freight would thence be to England or
France.
But were such roads built it would be neces
sary to operate them at much less rates for
freight and passengers than at present. The
latter is not so important as the former, but it
is vital nevertheless. Suppose a farmer along
the line of the Montour Run Kailway wants to
shin to the city; it will cost him six-sevenths as
much to ship three or four miles on that read
as it will on the Pittsburg and Late Erie Rail
war, and he must pay on both. The milk pro
ducer's freight is donhled. and some farmers
think tbe companies snouid practice reciproc
ity, la the matter of passenger rates
the situation is still worse. If you lire three
miles up the Montour Railway the commutation
rate is over -I cents a mile, while it is a traction
less than a cent on the Pittsburg and Lake
Erie. Thus on a commutation ticket you can
ride to Montour Junction, ten miles, for SJJ
cents while to ride three miles on the Montour
Railway cots IS cents. On the Sawmill Run
Railway fair rates are given bv the company,
and Superintendent Jones says it is found to be
good poIIo.
A vast amount of development is possible by
means of lateral railways on streams where
there is nogradinc nor heavy cuts to make, but
it cannot exist when passenger rates are at a
figure that makes horse carnage the cheapest.

WALLS STATION, situated onP.B.R
only eigbt miles from Pittsburg, has been se
lected by tbe Pennsylvania Railroad Company
as a site for the location of their immense ma
chine shops and round-house, which are now
being pushed to completion and will give steady
employment to several thousand skilled me
chanics and employes. Several other large
manufacturing establishments have also been
attracted to the same locality on account of the
abundant and cheap supply of natural gas and
other advantages. This emphasizing the fact
that this is but the nucleus of what promises to
be one of tbe most enterprising and wide
awake manufacturing towns in Western Penn
sylvania. Necessarily the vast army of employes and
others attracted to this center will require
homes adjacent to the railroad and shop, and In
order to meet tbe ever increasing demand for
such Mr. C. B. Seeley has laid out his desirably
located tract of land into a plan of splendid
building lots, ranging in size from 25x100 to 50x
300 on front streets, and prices from 175 to S750,
according to size and location.
Terms very small cash payment down and
balance on long time and easy payments.
This plan is desirably located within three
squares from Walls Station, on the southeast
side, and only one square from P. R. R. Trains
leave Union Station at 12:15, 12:50, 1, 2. and 3.

IT IS A FACT
That property fronting the
Allegheny Parks is selling at
from $500 to $800 per front
foot solely because of the
parks. Is it not iair to pre
sume that property fronting
the grand entrance to our own
Schenley Park will command
as high, or higher, prices?
When you consider that the
19 acres recently purchased
bv the citv for the main en
trance to the park will be
beautified in the highest style
of the gardener's art, that the
magnificent main building of
the Carnegie Libra, the Art
Gallery and Academy of
Sciences will be here, candidly,
will not the abutting property
be far more valuable than any
other residence property in
this city or Allegheny, prop
erty on the parks not excepted?
We believe it will.
In view of these facts, and
considering that property as
yet can be bought here for a
very small fraction of the
above prices, is it not wisdom
to buy now? We have some
of these lots on our books.
We think they are a good buy
either for use or speculation.
It's our business to sell them,
hence this advertisement.
