SILKS AND CLOTHS.
Imitation Smusglers Trying to Dis
pose of Inferior Material,

MOTHER AXD DAUGHTER BEHIND BAES
The "smusrgle fakir" is abroad in the land
again, and the police bureau warns all per
sons to be on the lookout Inr these sharps.
Two of tbem wound up in Central station
yesterday, and another one is known to be
at large in the city.
About 1 o'iock yesterday afternoon the
attention of Detectives Conlson and Robin
son was attracted to two women who were
trying to dispose of some silk in front of a
Smithfield street restaurant. The women
stated that the silk had been smuggled into
this country, and on account ot not paying
any duty on it, were enabled to sell it cheap.
Thinking the stuff had been stolen the
detectives arrested the two vomen, who
gave their names as Maiy and Bridget Gor
man. The former is mother of the latter,
and stated at the station house that the silk
bad been purchased in a Diamond street
store. The detectives went to the place and
found that the story was correct. The
women had purchased the stuff and made
similar purchases many times before.
FULL SCOPE OF THE-SCHEME.
Their scheme was to buy cheap silk and
give out the impression that it was of costly
manufacture, and on acconnt of being
broucht into this country without any tax
upon it, they could sell it cheaply. The women
reside at No. 399 Beaver avenue, Allegheny,
and, it is said, have been doing a profitable
business selling "smuRRled" goods. As they
had cot stolen or smuggled the silk and no
charge could be preferred apalust them, the
women were released with a reprimand by In
spector McAleese.
There is another "smuggler" in the city who
is selliuir cloth, but in this case it is a man. He
carries with him several rolls of cloth and cives
out the impression they are smucjrled. He is
veil known in tbe railroad offices in Allegheny
where he has done business, ana the young
men who bonght his cloth have been awaiting
an opportunity to interview bira since bis last
visit last tall. About a year ago he appeared
with his cloth and sold enough to make three
suit to three men for 10 per suit. He said the
stuff bad been smuggled from Canada into
this country, and owing to its low
cost when bought from the manufacturer, he
could sell it lor less than one-half what tbe
same goods ould cost if bought from a regu
lar dealer in tins city. Thinking they were get
ting tbe cloth cheap, and in the belief that it is
not a sin to rob the Government, tbe victims
gobbled the bait and purchased the cloth,
nbey were told they could have the-stuff made
dp into clothes for 510, but when they went to
co business with a tailor they found it would
ost considerable more.
STJKVIYAL OP THE FITTEST.
With the additional cost for trimminrs, etc,
the men thought they were ah tad of the came,
and put up tbe extra charges without a mur
mur. After their clothes bad been made they
looked well enough, but In less than a month it
was a race to see which would give out the
soonest. In two months it was found that the
cloth instead of bc-ing a superior quality was
ot an inferior grade, and tbe clothes looked as
shabby as if they had been worn for several
years.
The man who was around trying to sell cloth
in the Court House yesterday answered the
tame description as the man who "flimmed"
the Allcghemans about a year ago. He did
not say his goods had been smuggled, but his
actions led people to believe that no duty had
been paid on it. As far as could be learned be
dm not secure any customers, although his
prices were very low. He is still in the city,
but the police department cannot arrest bira.

sists oi fine clothing lor men, boys and

The appraisers Tor the insurance company
after care ully examining the stock ot cloth

actual loss we are forced to take the stock;
turn it into money, and tbe goods must be
sold at once in order to make a final settle
ment. All goods are appraised at 35 cents
on the dollar o! manufacturers' cost. As
this is all we want for them, the great fire
sale will enable people of this city and
vicinity to secure their clothing for almost
nothing. Sale will positively last only a
short time.
As the time of this great sale is limited,
everything will go off rapidly, This is the
first time a sale of such extraordinary mag
nitude has ever taken place in this city, and
will never occur again. In order to show
what gigantic bargains will be offered, a few
prices are mentioned, and remember this
