A Protest Against the Alleged Inattention of the Police. KECES51TI FOE A NEW GRETXA GEEEN The Curve Problem Again. To the Editor of The Dispatch: That the curve problem is a theme highly interesting to engineers and mechanics is very true. AYe cannot see, however, that "Locomotive Engineer" lias thrown any light on the subject. We are more in har mony with your Saturday's correspondent. A curve, wc presume, to be a portion of a circle, as commonly understood in railroad lore. And this must be the definition as understood by "Locomotive Engineer." Hence he uses the term, "rounding a curve." Xcw then, if the outer circle ot a curve is no longer than the inner circle of the same cut ve, then the same length ot rails will en circle the outer curve that will be sufficient for the inner curve. Suppose we test this on a Email scale. Take, for instance, a wagon wheel, whose felloes are 3 inches deep and the wheel 6 feet in diameter, and we wish to encircle both the onter and inner dimensions with an iron band. "We discover tne inner diameter is only 5 leet 6 inches because of tLe G inche deducted for the depth of the felloes. It seems pretty clear to us, that if the same length of rails will encircle tbo outside curve of a rail road that will be sufficient for the inside enrve, that the same length of iron band that will suffice for a o feet li inches diameter will be equally sufficient for the outer or G feet diam eter. And letvc hnd that figures do not bear this out, inasmuch as the circumference of a uiatnclcrof C feet is 18 feet 108 inches, while the circumference or a diameter of 5 feet C iucl.es is only lTfcet3J8 juche-, ana we can see no wa by which ue ciu encircle a distance of 18 feet 10i inches by a band that will only bo sufficient to reach a distance of 17 feet 10 inches. Locomotire Engineer" may ask us how we account for the fact that both wheels having been securely "keyed" on the same axle, the outer wheel keeps pace with the inner wheel, when we have tried to show that the outer w heel travels the greater distance. Note that w e do not say faster. We cau see but one solu tion of the problem. In rounding a curve the flange of the inner wheel presses securely to the inner side of the inner rail, and drags, or causes the face of the outer wheel to slip or MIdcon the fare of the outer rail. We suggest tin Idea as a reasonable one. but we do not offer it as a mathematical demonstration. If, however, it is not true, we would be pleased to learn the truth. BEN Catley. Pittsburg, October It A Document for the Police To the tdltor of The Dispatch : In the interest of the public safety, 1 bee through your columns to call the attention of the police anthoritics to the following facts: While crossing Fourth avenue, on Smlthfield street, this evening a wagon, with two men upou it, coming do'vn Fourth avenue at full tr nearly ran us down. I raised my hand to warn the drner to slack his speed, to which he paid dr ftttcction, nut ran right into us. The shafts of his wagon knocked a basket out of raj hand and scattered the contents through the street. I stopped his horse and called inr the police. 1 hclj onto the horse rcarly as tar as Wood sticet. still no policeman responded to my calL One man jumped from the wagon and freed the n lose lrom my grasp, w bile the others drove off at a rapid pace. There was no name or number upon the wagon by wbicn I could idcutifj it. I then went to the police station, on Diamond street, Not to disturb the court then sitting ,1 called a policeman outside and told lnru the circumstances, saj ing I w ould go with him and identify the wagon and the men. He did rot even pay the slightest attention to what I said. After telling him I did not know the parlies, he. in a drawling tone, asked me "who tbej-weie,"but as I could not tell him he retired to his onerous duties of lounging in the police court. I hus w?gons are permitted every hour of the day. to dm e sh t .ugh our streets at a pace that is in direct w-Iation of the city ordinances; and when a citizen, who has been nearly run over, and his property scattered through the streets, appeals to the police, for redress, he is confronted by a policeman actually too indo lent to listen to what be has to complain of. Is this as it should be? PLAIN" TALKER. Pittsburg, October 11. 1890. SHU Another Explanation. To the Editor orxbe Dispatch: None of your correspondents have yet pre cisely described that "curve problem," but, while not a railroader, I think I can. There are more lineal feet in the outside than in the inside rail, and as each wheel on one sine of a tram is made last to an anxle which tnrns with a w neel on the opposite side, it is impossible for the outside wheel to describe a greater number of resolutions than the inside wheel; jet. in rounding a curve, the former must travel a greater distance than the latter. This Is ac complished by constructing the rim of each wheels in such a manner that the inside ot the rim is of a greater circumference than the out fclde: and s the wheels have considerable 'plat'' between the rails on entering a curve tbo sluie sulcwa s toward the outside rail. Thus the outer wheel is runuiug on its inner and larger edge and the inner wheel on its outer or smaller edge. Thus the one wheel is enabled to travel a greater distance than the other and w ithout describing a greater number of i evolutions. S, Framlix, Pa., October 14, 1B901 No Naturalization Papers Needed.
