It was a strange, weird coachload of folk, speaking in a strange, weird tongue, and we rolled rapidly along through a strange,' weird country. Every soul of the dozen or more within the wagonette, but ruysel , Epoke the Gaelic tongue, andjot a word was spoken during the entire journey in English, save when I was addressed. It wr.s an immediate revelation of a condition of things in the Highlands which even in telligent Scotchmen ia the large lowland cities are unacquainted with, or affect to be ignorant of. Fmni every source of book, newspaper anu oral information outside the Highlands, you gam the impressiou that the Gaelic lunguage is dead; that perhaps somewhere among the peat and mists of in accessible peaks In DnnegalandConnaught, in Ireland, or of Sutherland, Eos, Skye and the Hebrides in Scotland, there are a few old men and women who have retained a. lew words o a language nnce common to the Cymric Olts; indeed that the Gaelic , language, with the crumbling remains of the glorious antiquities o Ireland and Scot land, are hut the fabrics of zealots' dreams. THE ORIGINAL GAELIC But it you uiii come far enough you will nd this language in all its original rich ness, purity and power, and will be astounded to know that every soul in many districts in Ireland, and, geographically, in the larger portion 01 Scotland, speak it every waking hour of their lives precisely as their forefathers spoke it for unknown cycles of years heiore them. "Oh, cs," explained my friend, "we are all Gaelic still, nnrth of Perthshire and Aberdeen-shire, and in all the outlying islands." And then modestly, and as though there might be .something of the liugering old Jacobitic sedition in it: "I preach to my people in Gaelic everv other Sunday." "And do they all understand it? "Understand ii! They will tell you that Adam spoke Gaelic; that the Scripture can tie alone properlv expounded in Gaelic; my English sermons are liven to empty benches; the Gaelic Sundavs bring hearers from 20 miles away; and every lace is a picture of radiant devotion and joy evn to the last one of their brave collie dogs!" Bless tht-m for loyaltv to theit- traditions and language, it must be so; for below and behind us there came a roar of song that echoed wildly through the g'ens and passes. They had worn ont the thread-bare gossipot" Strathglas, and, as all without exception Lad had tne cockles of their hearts warmed a little this day bv "a cinder in their glasses." as the Highlanders affectionately term a drop of peat whisky, moodiness and silence, aiter "the ceilidh" or gossiping was exhausted, were succeeded by imuetuous soug. "Coire Cheathaich" was the name of the first one they sang and the very title, from coire, kettle and cheathaich, steaniv, vapory, or "The Misty Dell" as applied to a loved Highland valley or hollow, is illus trative of the exquisitely poetic significance of words in all Gaelic original. A RELIGIOUS DISPUTE. "It will be my turn soon!" said my friend In a whisper and with a grimace of resigna tion. 'Tour turn?" "They will tire of their 'Misty Dell' shortly, and then everv one, women and all, will begin such a doctrinal exposition and catechism as, could you hear it in English, you would regard as'little else than assault. Ob, yes, every one of my flock, and indeed til Highlander.-, love to get their .minister outside the kiik, and harry him a little. All Scotchmen -re born disuutant Add a little of the right kindofflime to their z?al and they are masters of polemics. One glass makes one of my people a doctrinal enthusiast; two sets him to expounding t e most difficult theologic problem; and, I sometimes think, with another he would stop en his w iy into heaven and engage St. Peter himsel'." But far up the strath our horses were changed at a little clachan. Then here and there, where lootpaths turned to the heights nboeor the valley beueath, peasant cloc trinaries one bv one descended and dis appeared with a departing shotol scriptural ferocity, harder and fiercer than all the granite crags above us. The shadows crept ,xn and were marshaled in dark nha'.auxes in the strth-oed far down there, thonsands ot feet below. The river, now broad and glassv, now a foaming torrent, and again a leathery waterfall, onlv disclosed its course in sound. Hints of great bunting lodges, like castles, were revealed by ghostly tur rets sharply cut against the leaden sky above tne darkening trees, or by tremen dous gates belore great avenues of syca mores, or bv liveried servitors standing at the roadside to catch the mail pouchesflung to them is we rattled by. And finally, five little flaxen beads, apparition-like, bobbing beside the cnarh, and crowing and shonting .to the "pappy" beside me, told me we were at last in the heart of grand Strathglass; and that the gieat square pile behind the larches, Horn which the welcoming lamp and fire light shnne, was the sweetold Manse of F snakyle, where, or a little, a Yankee pilgrim was to find a hospitable Highland home. In the first sta:e of consumption or early part of the seennd stage, dunngtha bre.tkingdoun process, but beiore cavities have actually formed, I can arrest and cure the disease in eveiy case where I can get the entire co-operation of the patient. Even in the latter part of the second or early part of the bird and last stage, when cavities exist, the distressing stmptotus can be relieved and life piolonged with comparative comfort. Wm. CByers, M. D., Xo. 141 Perm Ave., JVtue, Tliroat and Lung Specialist. Since the Tuberculosus Congress decided that consumption is due to the presence ol the tubercle bacillm the pneumatic cabinet treat ment has become the recognized mode of treat ment among all progressive and wideawake physicians. The success I have had with this method of treatment during the past three years is simply marvelous. 1 here are scores of people walking the streets ol Pittsuurg tn-dny who owe their lives to it. and will cheerfully teitify to the fact Manv of them never swal lowed a mouthful of medicine during the whole course of treatment, uhich makes their re covery still' more marvelous. By the cabinet treatment antiseptic or gerni-ilest'roying sprays are brought into direct contact with the lung tissue, cleansing and appljiug medicine im mediately to the diseased, parte. The treat ments are not at all unpleasant or hurtful to the weakest patients. I often put my little daughter in the cabinet to strcnithen and de velop her lungs, as she has had pneumonia twice. On account of the great cost ot the cabinet (foOO), and time consumed iu tre.itincnt. from one-half to one hour, I cliariru SI for each in halation, or Si per week tor daily inhalations, which are often necessary In very bad cases. I have the only cabinet aud fully equipped in halarium la the city. CATARRH TREATMENT S5 A MONTH. I continue to treat catarrh by the Besaler sp'ray method and the aplication and ad ministration of such medicines as each case Indicates, for So a month. Bear this tact in mind, catarrh can only be thoroughly eradi cated by combined local and Internal treat ment, and those trying any other course are simply wasting their time and money and jeopardizing their health and even lives. For out-of-town patients I have devised u svstom of home treatment, combining both local and in ternal medication Write for symptom blank. DR.
