SAVING Ui' HISTORY. A Plan to Make a Historical Collec tion in Washington, Pa., IN COXKECTIOX WITH THE SCHOOL Mr. W. W. Smith at Work to Collect Money to fat Up an Iron Building. HOW MAST TALCABLE FACTS ARE LOST When 'William Henry Smith, General .Manager of the Associated Press, was in PitUburij last week, he went to "Washing ton, Pj., to see W. W. Smith, a prominent banker of that place and a cousin ot General Grant, to get some data lor a political his tory he is writing of the war times. Dur in.e the conversation the newspaper man re marked that Western Pennsylvania had figured prominently in the history ot the country, and he felt confident there Tere a number of old documents, relics, etc, lying around loose that, if gathered together and pieserved, would make a very interestinc collection. He wanted to know why a fire proo building was not erected somewhere and such a collection made. 3dr. Smith, of Washington, has enter tained such a plan for quite a while, but he is anxious to have the building put up on the "Washington and Jefferson campus, and to be conducted in connection with that in stitution. CAME TO TOWS 1'OIJ MONET. Deis willing to contribute treely toward the object, and yesterdavcame to see Charles J. Clarke and other "Washington and Jeffer son men iu Pittsburg to broach the scheme , to them. 3Ir. Smith is very enthusiastic overthe project, and feels sure that n an iron build ing as erected tbat the people would contrib ute old Ietterp, historical data, etc., concernlne WetPennslvama. He said it is surprising now many t jluableand interestins papers are extant about ibis part of the State that are Jeslrayed by the sons or the sols' wires who do not realize their im portance. .Mr. feraith' Idea is to make a col lection ot relics, ancient accounts, diaries, the conepondcncc or public men and their opin ion t on cut rent topics of their times, or any thlrg else tbat nnuld throw light on the his tory of Western Pennsylvania. Kerentl) ill tearing down an old house in t'jyette county same valuable papers belong ing to Albert Gallatin, one of the pioneers in "Western PrnnsIvania and a prominent man in his da. were found between the walls. How tbey got there is a nnstery. nosEcn gallatix's opinions. In the lot was a diary in which Mr. Gallatin had expressed his opinions very fully about thendir.im-trations of bis day and the forma tion of the Constitution. There were also some interesting pacers with notations on the uiarcin. made by tbe distinguished pioneer. Tbe cnances are these old documents will lie kicked around until the are lost, bat if such a buildins upr; put up tbey could lie pre-erted. The present generation is in pos session it a variety of thincs tbat would throw light on past times These papers and relics are hauded doun to tile children, and Mr. Sini li sajs that in this way much information about tbe early historv of Western Pcnnsjl vanu Las been lost. Tbe sons and their wives do not realize their importance, and, like the tbe servant cirl uo found tbe manuscript of Carlisle's UrsMoiuine of Frederick the Great Hint; on the floor and burnt it, they deliver up these old manuscripts and letters to the flames. He expecisih.it the graduates of the Wash ington and JeCerou College will produce the money to put up toe iron buildmc He thinks there n ill tie no trouble about making tbe col lection. Hope is expre-sed that the his oncal society will assist m tnc work. The object is laudatory, unci Mr.tsniith is very much encour aged so tar. I TOLD you so! So you succeeded in curing your neuralgia with Salvation Oil. 25 cents. The Place to Buy Table Linens, Cheap, Is In our big linen department We guaran tee a saving on every purchase. Jos.
