THE l PITTSBURG- "DISPATCH, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 10, 1890.

i -
friend, who is so soon to pass to heaven and
his reward. Each of you will receive for
your courtesy 100 onzai. Pray excuse this
unceremonious summons."
The old lawyer bowed, and Don Carlos
till maintains that, happening to catch a
glimpse of his own face in a great mirror in
the room, be saw himself a man of 251
For an hour all was quiet in that chamber
save lor the whispers 01 the dying man, the
qnill scratching of the notary, who, at the
dictation of the lawyer, was putting in shape
the words of the testator.
Propped up by his son's strong arms, the
old man took leave of his family, and they
retired to the remoter part of the chamber
while the will was read in a dry tone by tbe
notary, the dying man assenting by nods.
He then feebly traced his name, and the no
tary, drawing up a table, had the witnesses
sign their full names and rubricas.
This concluded, a painful silence ensued,
broken dismally by the sick man's gasps for
breath. Suddenly he became silent One
of the sons announced: "He is dead."
The family, save the sons, retired, and there
remained, in a little space, no one in the
apartment but the bookseller and the young
men mentioned. Don Carlos was partly
hidden from view by the angle of a huge
wardrobe. The sons seemed oblivious of
his presence.
To the intense horror of the old booksel
ler, one of the young men approached the
bed, bent over his father, and, suddenly
drawing a dagger 01 slender blade, plunged
it in the breast of the prostrate man. So
horrified was Don Carlos Baltasar that he
could not speak; his tongue clove to the roor
of his mouth; his flesh chilled. Still un
aware ol tbe presence ot the bookseller, tbe
young men withdrew, their faces sternly
sad, their lips tightly pressed. Don Carlos
did not move. He waited, petrified, as it
were, in the shadow of the wardrobe, till
some old women entered and began prepar
ing the corpse lor burial. They crooned
among themselves at tbe task. Don Carlos
fonnd curiosity conquering terror. He
came out irora his lurking place, ap
proached the bed, and found strength to
utter: "He was stabbed in the heart; he
was murdered!"
One of tbe old women turned to him (she
was wonderfull v like the snuff peddler) and
said Briefly: ".Not so, senor; it was our
master's wish; he feared burial alive "
Somehow Don Carlos managed to get out on
the corridor, where, leeling a suddon laint
nes, he fell into a large chair. One of the
sons catne to him and said: "Are you still
here; the rest have gone. Are you ill?" and,
hurrying off, he called a servant. Wine was
brought and given the bookseller, quite as
pale now as the dead man within. Don
Carlos partook cf the wine, and was soon
able to stand.
Going down the broad staircase, he met at
its foot the old woman of the snuff. She ac
companied him to tbe street door, near which
many servants were discussing in low tones
tbe circumstances of the death scene up
stairs. The great door opened, nod Don Car
los found himself outside in the glar: of the
thoroughfare. Somehow the glare of an elec
tric light post brought him to himsel' as
with a shock. He muttered: "But this is
strange; I seem to have been in timei far
gone." Bat he did not slacken his pac till
he regained his familiar shop, in whose win
dows translations in Spanish of Herbert
Spencer and Draper josiled Santa Teresa
and tbe latest novels ot Valdes.
His assistants thought the old man a little
upset, ne was pale, an unusual circum
stance, and all that day and the next he ap
peared as in a dream. Xot a word ol his ad
venture did he breathe to his friends or to
his assistants in the shop. He seemed to be
waiting for somebody, because, contrarv to
his habit, he nculd 'tand for hours in the
doorway, instead of sitting behind the coun
ter, where he might stroke the black and
erudite cat.
On the morning of the third day the snuff
woman appeared at the door of the shop.and
found Don Carlos standing there. She was
followed by a queer old lellow clad in the
coi uiae ol times agone Don Carlos noted
that his feet were shod with sandal. He car
ried a canvas bag, which he placed in Don
Carlos hands, the old snuff woman saying,
significantly and with a steady voice:
"Amico you have earned your fee. Adios!"
And she disappeared around the corner.
Don Carlos hastened to an inner room of
the shop, carefully closed tbe door, took out
his pocket knife cut the cords around the
mouth of the little bag, and peeped in.
"Onzas de ore!" he exclaimed, and then:
"I had thought perhaps 1 was going crazy,
but here is ocular proot that I am sound in
mind, and that my memory does not tail me
nor my brain play me fantastic tricks." He
counted the onzas. There were 209 his wit
ness fee. Kext he locked the bag in his safe.
"Golden ounces of King Philip," be mut
tered Then he went out among his shop
people, his face care free, his. eyes bright
once more.
That night he gave a dinner to bis inti
mate friends, and tuld them at table his
strange story. They thought the dear old
leiiow a on turnea in nis head till he
showed them the golden ounces of the
Spanish Kin. All agreed they would go
with him on the morrow to see the house.
The day came. The banqueters assembled
at tbe shop, and accompanied Don'Carlosto
the house in Jloutealegre street. Don Car
los trembled a little as he lifted the knock
er. The door opened. A tervant in mod
ern dress asked their wish. The bookseller
beg ed permission to see the master of the
house.
"He is not at home," said the servant.
"The family have been in Puebla for two
weeks, and only I have been lelt here. I
am glad to see some one, for I have been ill,
but did not dare to leave the house for fear
of thieves entering. A lew days ago I was
out of my head tor many hours, and I do
not knou if I should have come to myself,
but lor an old woman who came to me and
gave me some aguardiente and a queer med
icine. It made me well in an instant. But
how the woman entered the house, which
wrs locked and barred, I do not know."
"Did she wear a black dress of woolen
stuff, ind a little cross on a black bead
chain?"
"Why, yes, seDor: that is what she wore;
how d! you know?"
But Don Carlos did not vouchsafe a reply.
The patio, or courtyard, was entirely mod
ern. Surely it was the house of the rich
lawyer, his old customer. He hesitated to
ask, but now he inquired:
"Is this not the house of Don Pedro Ala
torre, the lawyer?"
"Yes senor; and why did you not ask for
him at first, pray?"
"Because I was a trifle confused. Is he
well?"
"Ob, yes, perfectly so; only his daughter
is ill, and the family went to Puebla, so
that she might take the sulphur baths."
Don Carlos and his friends withdrew, hut
he could not resist asking one more ques
tion: "Does your master use mules in his
coach?"
"He his never had mules in the house,
senor, hut it seems to me that was one of the
things that troubled my poor head when I
was ill the other day. I dreamed that there
were great mules standing harnessed In the
courtyard."
"So did I," said Don Carlos, whereat his
friends laughed.
The servant looked profoundly puzzled,
but politely said: "Goodby, gentlemen."
The next day, when I went to the shop of
Don Carlos to get my cony of'Lallus
tracion Zspauola," he told me the story
nearly as I have related it, and, taking me
to his inner room, showed me the bag of
ounces. That was tbe "proof," as he said.
Two days alter, I was passing the shop,
when Don Carlos beckoned to me to enter.
He plainly had something to communicate. I
was all expectation, and was not to be dis
appointed. He sii(i:"JIv friend, you should
know that, day before yesterday, a gentle
man came here ostensibly to buy a work ol
science. His face was wonderlully familiar,
and I ventured to ask him his name: He
answeree that it was Orozco, whereat I felt
again faint, lor face and voire and name re
called the other witness to the will! He pre
tended not to notice my excitement, and I
had not the courage to inquire more. But
on leaving he gave me an imploring look,
put his fingers to bis lips, shook his head
and so made known to me that he was well
aware of our share in a strange transaction.
Would you believe it, friend, that only
this morning I received a black-bordered
envelope, and that it contained the notice
of the sadden death of Don Eicardo Orozco,
my fellow witness. He has gone to join the
pe'ople of our adventure, those people of tbe
past who somehow projected themselves
into our lives and into this late time. I
fesr, my friend that I shall soon join my
fellow witness."
But now, near three months aiter tbU
occurrence, Don Carlos Baltasar still lives,
a little feebler, often dreamy and absent
minded, as befits a man who has lived in
two periods so remote. He belongs to the
dim past and also to the electrically-lighted
present.
I have come to be very fond of my old
book-selling friend. To me he is a proof
that "things are not what they seem," that
we live in a world of illusions and mere
appearances. The City of Mexico grows
shadowy; I expect that anything prodigious
may huppen. The "Mystery of Olmedo
Street" no longer seems an idle tale. The
woman transformed into a mule and cruelly
shod is altogether likely.
If onlv I could meet and talk with the
old snuff woman! But Don Carlos says that
she has never returned. Strange tobacco
that woman sold! Boston Herald..
A DANGEROUS FIRE
BREAKS OUT IN THE OLD ACADEMY OF
MUSIC BUILDING.
Xine Steamers Respond, and After a Hard
Fight, Subdue the Flames Compara
tively Small Losses A1I Around Repairs
Already Under Way.
About 6 o'clock yesterday morning fire
was discovered in Ii. J. Swindell's shooting
gallery, in the basement of the Academy of
Music building, on Liberty street. The
flames spread rapidly to Carr Brothers' res
taurant, from there to Cammilli's fruit
stand and then began eating its way to the
Academy proper through the ceilings of the
various buildings named. Two alarms
were sent in and nine steamers responded.
The police, headed by Inspector McAleese
and Captain TJnterbaum, were soon on hand
to keep the great crowd back, and, alter a
two-hours' battle, tbe firemen had the blaze
under control. Although quite badly dam
aged, the losses to the building and tenants
will not be great. Mr. Williams said yes
terday afternoon that $2,000 would cover all
his loss. He had no insurance, the place
being in charge of watchmen day and night,
while the fire apparatus in the building is
very complete. Some of the scenery waB
destroyed, and Mr. Williams will put iu
a new floor and replace a few chairs,
which will keep the Academy closed
until one week from Monday. In
tbe mean time the regular performances ad
vestised for the houss will be given at the
Grand Central Kinkbuilding. Mr. Williams
said the fire would have no influence what
ever in hurrying up his proposed new place
of amusement.
Mr. Swindell's loss will he about $1,000,
with no insurance. Carr Brothers carried
$5,000 insurance, which will lully cover
their losses. Mr. Cammilli's loss will
be about $5C0. Ifo insurance. Colonel .
J. Allen, the ownr o! the building, will
sutler no loss. He has $24,000 insurance, of
which $11,400 is in the following local com
panies: Boatman's, $1,250; People's, $1,250;
Merchants and Manufacturers', $1,250;
German American, $1,250; Union, $1,250;
Birmingham Fire, $1,000: Cash, $2,500, and
Ben Franklin, $1,750.
The insurance loss on the building will be
about 16 per cent, or $4,000. The loss to the
local companies will be about $1,900.
This is the second fire that has occurred in
the building, the first being in 1855 during
tbe reign ot Trimble's Varieties. It is ex
pected that the entire business of the first
floor will be in running order by Monday.
Manager Williams' company played to a
large audience in the Rink, last e'vening.
He will occupy the house until his own
variety home is fully repaired. Mr.
Wiliiams it in receipt ot pecks of telegrams
