Tbe results of September operations pre
sent an interesting study for the producer
find tbe trade in general. Id nearly every
pool of the Southwest, the report shows an
increase both in production and wort, as
compared with August. The Butcher
well at Bakerstown, on the Clendenning
farm, is perhaps the greatest surprise of the
month. Just whether this new strike will
open up any territory to speak of will remain
for the drill to determine. One fuct
has already been demonstrated, and that
is, the well possesses the same characteris
tics as the old gushers struck in this field,
which, it will be remembered, -were sbort
lircd. "With this exception, together with the
Mellon well on the Cassldav farm, one mile
Booth of Coraopolis developments, and the Pat
terson well on the McCurdy farm. 1$ miles
southwest from tbe old Crafton field, there has
been no new territory developed worthy of
Special mention.
The Mellon well wonld seem to Indicate an
other Coraopolis pool, nbich, taken in con
nection with the Finegan A Downing well, on
the Cooper farm, looks as if there was quite an
brea of prospective territory In this section.
The well to-night is dome 200 barrels a day, and
is the basis on which a nnmber of locations
hare been made. The Patterson well, from
its present showing, is a much better one than
is conceded it by the average producer, and the
lact that it has developed some new territory
cannot be ignored.
iK INCREASED PBODUCTIOX.
In. the Belmont and Eureka, lit. Morris,
Chartiers and Crafton, AVlldwood, Mannlngton
und Washington fields, the report shows a new
product of 12.70S barrels, which is an increase
lor the same territory over August production
of 8.451 barrels. This increase comes mainly
from Wildwood, which has a new production
of 6,750 barrels.
In this connection it should not be forgotten
that the large output is atributable to five or
six big wells which have come in close together.
The production of these wells is already show
ing a material decrease, and 30 days hence a
decline of 50 per cent can be safely
counted on. The most productive part
of tbe territory, which is on a 15 line, has
been extended only by one location. The new
features of the field are found inthoAJenko
farm fourth sand well, on the southeast line of
tbe field, and the Young well, which, from its
location and caliber. Indicates a parallel or
cross belt. There are now drilling 48 wells and
SI rigs up and building, making a total of 80, as
compared with 53 wells and 9 rics. a total of 62

Eureka and Belmont rank second in tbe in
crease of production. There were completed
tt wells, giving a daily ontpnt of 2,995 barrels,
nbile in August there were 20 wells finished,
having a production of 1,200 barrels, which is
an increase of 1,795 barrels. The Stewart well
shows an extension of territory up the river
on the Virginia side of nearly three-quarters
of a mile, which is tbe only

Chartiers and Cratton together
comp'eted 28 wells, with a production of 892
barrels, a decrease from August of 750 barrels.
At Mannington nothing particularly new has
transpired during the month. There were 11
new wells added to the completed list, giving a

of the field 1,600 barrels a day.
A careful tabulation of tbe field indicates 42
wells drilling and 20 rigs up, while the total is
an increase of 14 over August's work. Noth
ing of anv consequence occurred at Washing
ton and Taylorstown, and only 525 barrels of
new production is shown, an increase
of 230 barrels from August. Butler conn
ty, for a wonder, has remained pass
ive, and is retrograding from lier
historical heights both in work and new pro
dnction. Venango and Clarion nave abont
run their race, and but little available territory
remains to be drilled. In the middle and
northern fields nothing has transpired to re
lieve tne monotony, and September reports
about a standoff with August. Following is a
tabulated report of the important Southwest

Tho Forest Oil Company and Boyd, McNulty
ft Co., of Pittsburg, have been making things
rather lively for tbe past few days. The contest
is over the right of ownership of a 80 acre loase
on the Frank Miller farm, which both parties
claim. Superintendent R. J. Phipps took pos
session on Saturday evening and had a rig, or
part of one, belonging to the Pittsburg com
pany removed, and moved on a boiler. Then
things remained quiet until Monday, when ths
report was circulated that the Pittsburg peo-

ut that proved to be a canard, and the case
now rests nntil a legal decision is rendered.
