Timorous Discnssion. ot the Eulject of
Technical Grammar.
MUSIC AT THE ACADEMY MEETIKG
Three meetings .were on the programme yes
terday for the 'city teachers and the educa
tional fraternity wis consequently kept quite
busy. At 9 o'clock A. K. the principals and
assistant principals met to consider the trade
In drawing for the High School class for the
coming term. Every school district had repre
sentatives except the Daquesne and Riverside.
Many teachers of writing and drawing were
also present.
The present system of drawing has been
taught in the Pittsburg schools only for the
past year, the pnpils completing 9 books out of
the 12 of the series, the last three including
perspective drawing. As the pupils are exam
ined tor High School. In December, they would
not have timetocoier this the most difficult
branch or drawing. So the High School ex
aminers are willing that perspective drawing
be eliminated from books 11 and 12, and onlr
Instruction in mechanical designs be given this
year.
To Eotcrtntn Visitor.
The Executive Committee of the Teachers'
Institute organized at 11 A.SL Superintendent
Lackey was elected President, and Miss M. E.
Hare Secretary. Superintendent Lackey will
at once open communication with the princi
pals of all the normal schools, 13 in number,
and endeavor to have them present at a general
Institute to be held in November, on some Fri
day evening. During the day the distinguished
Tisltors will be divided into groups and will be
chaperoned by members of the Executive Com
mittee ta visit all the city schools. At the
eveninc session the citizens will be Invited.
The following morning the teachers will bo in
conclave. The committee is desirous of hav
ing an educational gathering in November of
much brilliance.
Quite an assemblage of teachers met at U.
V. L. Hall yesterday afternoon tor the first
meeting of the Teachers' Academy. The an
nual election of officers occurred and resulted
as follows: .President, Superintendent Luckey,
ex-omcio; Vice Presidents, J. M. Logan.
Peebles: AV. A. Proudflr, O'Hara: Cor
responding Secretary, Miss M. J. Polley,
Soho; Recording Secretarv, J. Handlon,
Liberty; Treasurer, Miss M. E. Hare, Birming
ham; Board of Supervisors, C. A, Riddle,
Mlnersville: Prof. Speer, High; AV. A'. Ken
ned v, Allen; M. A. Hunter, Belinda; K. Evans,
Buho.
A Musical Treat.
During the session pupils from the rooms of
the Misses Polley, of the Soho and Bellfleld
schools, sang, "Praise ye the Lord," "Welcome
to Spring," and "Swiss Mountaineer." Their
singing showed excellent training on the part
of their teachers, the alto and bass voices of
the boys being a special feature. The thanks
were tendered singers and teachers.
The Misses Clara McMillan, Belle Eades,
Sadie Burnett, OIlio Patterson, Elizabeth
Jenkins. Emma Marshal and Emma D. Hunter
were admitted to membership. By a vote of
the academy a change nas made regarding the
admission of new members and the dato of the
last meeting changed from June to May.
"Technical Grammar" was discussed by
Principals Fisher and J. M. Logan. Principal
Fisher took the stand that all study has one of
three objects, either as practical, disciplinarian
or cultuie, and that there could be no discipline
eo thorough as the study of the entire subject
of technical grammar.
Belongs to tie High School.
Prof. Logan took an entirely opposite view.
stating that the study of English grammar has
but one object, that is to speak and write the
language correctly. Therefore there are many
things in the technical grammar that have no
practical use. He thought there is too much
grammar expected in the ward schools and
iuai me nne points in grammar snouia Deiong
to the High .School course.
Prof. H. W. Fisher, of the Washington
schools, u ho has been Vice President for the
Jxt five years, refused renomination. The
thanks were tendered him for his efficient
work in the interest of the academy.
School mnlITnlk.
Miss Olive Calewei.i and Miss Cora
Evans have been elected additional teachers in
the Allen and Washington schools respectively.
The Exposition will be visited by the Colfax,
Highland, Homeuood, Humboldt, Morse,
Peebles. Sterret and AVickersham pnpils the
coming week.
Pay day for the teachers will be Monday,
September 9. The primary teachers who have
been teaching five years will receive an increase
of S5 per month.
Miss L"tcxe has been appointed additional
teacher in the Whittier building of the Mr.
Washington district. Miss Aldcrson will also
teach in the Whittier instead of the Mt. Wash
ington, where she was formerly.
