THE HTTSBUBG- D1SPAT0H. SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 189a NOT A PLEASURE TRIP An Allegheny Physician's Experi ence on a European Tour. BIS MONEI BOUKD UP IN A DRAFT, And fle Chased All Over the Continent Irving; to Get it Cashed. STOWAWAY IX THE FULDA'S STEERAGE There is probably one physician in Alle gheny who would rather spend a lifetime in the practice of his profession than take another European trip if he were sure of baring as much trouble as he had on his last one. Dr. B. Burns, of Federal street, had an experience a short time ago that combined pleasure, amusement, disappoint ment, discouragement and real downright hardships at one and the same time. He had been booked to read a paper at the Berlin Medical College early in August, and sailed from New York on theNormania after having had all his money converted into a draft, which the New York agent told him would be payable on the ship. After he was about two days oat the doctor had occasion to use some cash and going to the purser to get his draft cashed was informed that he would not be able to secure the amount short of Hamburg. Dr. Burns stuck to the old ship and at last landed, with the thought that his troubles were over. But he had reckoned and lelt out the sailor who handles the baggage. This enterprising individual dropped the doctoi's hat box and medicine case over the gang plank into the sea. Next the doctor proceeded to look up bis draft. At the office of Henderson & Bros.. to whom he was reierred. he was informed that he would have to go to Bremen or Ber lin to secure his ducats. He was to have been in Berlin the next day to read his pa per, and was in Hamburg with no visible means oT getting away. But he got to Ber lin onlv three hours late. After the congress the doctor proceeded to see the country and enjoyed himself for a few days. He engaged passage on the City of Home, dated to sail on September 6, pay ing 350 marks. Two days later he received a cablegram to come borne immediately. The first boat was the Fulda, which sailed Sep tember 30. He disposed of his City of Home ticket at a 5 loss and then fonnd that the check he received in payment was vrortless. Next he found that every berth on the Fulda was gone. But he bad to come home, so he bribed a sailor to take his baggage aboard while he took chances of getting there himself. He managed to do so, and of course thev could not throw him over board. The Fulda has accommodations for 600 p2s,sengers, and 1,100 were aboard that trip. Dr. Burns was compelled to pay $110 for accommodations in the steerage, and says he was glad to get home at that.
