TUE1DAT SEPTEMBER 16, 189a BS2m A BUSTED LAND BOOM Gets a Real Estate Speculator From Ohio Into the County Jail. BELGIAN GLASiiBLOWERS LOSE The Honey Thej Paid for Eesldence Sites .Near Lancaster. CASES IK THE HANDS OP THE CONSUL An information was made yesterday be fore Alderman Gripp charging E. M. Shanley with obtaining money under false pretense in selling land for which be has no title. Alfred George, a Belgian glass blower of the Sontbside, makes the in formation on which the arrest was made, bat there are at least 20 others, mostly of the same nationality, who were caught on the same scheme. Shanley sold lots in the Highland addition to the city of Lancaster, O., and he claimed to be representing the Highland Manufact uring Company. He operated among th" foreign glassblowers, especially the Belgians of Tittsburg and Ticinity. The first pur chase of land was made by Alfred George, the plaintiff in this case, last November. Since that time he has paid the full amount of the purchase, 362. The contract was that a deed was to be delivered as soon as the last payment was made. "When the last amount was paid, in March, Shauley executed a deed to George and he sent it to Lancaster to haTe it recorded. The infor mation was soon after receiTed that Shan ley did not own the property and could not law'ully execute a deed. He had con tracted with the owner of the land, but bad not complied with the provisions of the contract and therefore could not sell the property. DIXttf'T EETUEN THE CASH. After lea jing the status of affairs at Lan caster, George referred the matter to Ar nold Schneider, Consul from Belgium, who immediately began to try to bave the man's money. He wrote to Shanley and others in Lancaster. Shanley replied that there was hitch in the proceedings, but that he would soon have it filed up, and every thing was all right. Later on he wrote that if Mr. George wanted his money he would send him a dralt for the amount, but would ratber he would await developments. To save further trouble, Mr. Schneider im mediately telegraphed Shanley to send the money at once. This Shanley failed to do. but protested that he was a little short and would fix the matter up soon. The next time Shanley was heard from he was in Tennessee looking alter his land in terests there, but his anjirs in Lancaster were still in a muddle. At about this time The Dispatch made an expose of the operations. Shanley soon after appeared in the city and protested that everything was all right, and that be was only delayed in securing a title to his land. He then threat ened to sue Sir. Schneider for S20.000 libel, but lett the city before making any move in that direction. Since Mr. Shanley's last visit to Pittsburg, Mr. Schneider has writ ten attorneys and others in Lancaster re garding the matter, who replied that the money was all lost. He considered Shanley speculator who had staked all on a real estate Doom there and had lost his own and ' he people's money in the deal. -WILLING TO SETTLE. tr. Schneider then made an effort to jave Sbanler visit Pittsburg, it being his intention to terve papers on him as soon as lie entered this city. However, the scheme did not succeed until yesterday, when Siianlev came to the city and stopped at the Duquesne. An information was immediately made before Alderman Grip, and the man was arrested. He professed to be in the citv on business connected with a leading manufacturing firm. He probably referred to the Diamond Steel "Works, as lie made a visit to the office of that com pany early yesterday morning before be was arrested. After going to jail Shanley sent lor Mr. Schneider, with the hope ot settling the matter up, but it was too late -when Mr. Schneider appeared at the jail, and he failed to get an interview. It is claimed that at least 20 and probably SO people were taken in on Shanlev's scheme and he feecured about $4,000 in Pittsburg and vicinity. His opperations took in Ohio ab well, and it is tnougbt that he also secured large amouuts there. Mr. Schneider has the case of the Belgians who trusted their cash to Shan ley in his care. Beside Alfred Gcorse, who isaSouthside glassbiower, there are Victor Vislett, of Jeanuette; Julius Quertinmot, of 1'ostoria; Mrs. Cornell, o: Jeanuette, and many others. All those who had any deal ings with Shanley have been sent lor and will appear against bim. Shanley has em ployed L. K. Porter as his attorney. The bearing is set for "Wednesday. A &PLENOID BARGUN.
