LIYE STOCK KEYIEW. Largest Run of Cattle of the Season at the East Liberty Tards. THE AVERAGE GRADE YERT POOR. Common and Inferior Stock Slow at a De cline in Prices. SBEEP STEADI AND SWINE STROXG OFFICE OF THE PlTTSBUBp DISPATCH, Wedesday. bepteniber 10, 1690. The supply of cattle tor the local trade at East Liberty yards was the largest of the season, while quality was below average. At the openiug of markets on Monday morning there were over 140 loads on s-ile. Later in the day there ttere reimorcements, and the total arrivals for the week have been about ICO carloads. Our local trade calls lor little more than halt this number. As a result of the big run markets were off 10 to 15 per cent from last week on all crades excepting prime stock, which were not to be had. Light tidy butcher beeves, wcighinc; fron 1.100 to 1.200 pounds would have e-isiiy brought last week's pntes, but they were not on hand in carload lots. The hot weather of the early part ot the week had a bad effect on the selling interest. Ibis with the generally common and inferior quality of offerings had a depressing influence on trade, and placed sellers at the mercy or buyers. Prime beexes, neighing 1,500 to 1,700 Its, were quoted at $4 50 to H 75, but so far as could be lcarnel there were none of this grade on sale. 'J he top of the market at East Libert was 4 25. Hut hers ibo handle prime stock are buing direct from Chicago. Certain it is that they could not have been supp led from the East Liberty yards tins week. 1 he quality of cattle offered at ilea's Island this week was full up toaerace, and, in a retail way tuere were sales there at to Jo per hundred. Hieher Prices in Chicago ' Advices from Chicago indicate higher prices for the week to come. Top prices there are So 25. and there is little doubt of an advance here or hca,y losses next week to the drover. There were about 20 car loads of sheep and lambs on the market at East Liberty yards this week. Quality was scarcely up to average, and far below par." A single deck of sheep weigh in: about 102 pnurd of fine quality was sold at Sc. This was outride ot the regular market, 'lhe geceial range for sheep was 4Vc to4J4c, and lambs 5e tn SKe. A few extra lambs were fold aicPjC. In L.tnet-1 the market varied ery little th's week fruni last. Good stock was llitn. aud low grade-, which were in the major it), were slo. lhcrunif hogs fortheweek has been light as compared with last week, and markets have been q .let. There were about 23 Inads on sale Monuu, and top prices were i4 75 to 14 bo. Goad Trndine 'l,p Grain Fit at a Higher Level of Values Waiting on the Government Report Pork About Steady. CHICAGO Wheat was fairly active to-day, and closed fi&Ji" higher than yesterday. There was no disposition to enter largely into new speculative ventures, operators generally being inclined to await the Government report and be on a surer footing as to which course to pursue. Outside business was light and most of the trading local. Operators were rather bnllishly inclined, believing that the Govern ment report would make a poorer show as to the yield of spring wheat than the last report. The opening" was from about the same as yes terday's closing to c lower, nrlces varying some, but declined after some fluctuations c, or off to SI 01 for December and Jl 05 to.- May. then became stronger, and under fair buying advanced steadily c or to SI 02K for Decem ber and S103Jfnr May, eased off some, and clo-ed ?iJi: higher than esterday. Corn There was a fair business transacted. The feeling at times was relatively firmer on the new futures, October in particular, while May was heavy. Rains were reported in Mis souri, but elsewhere in the corn oelt the weather was clear. First trades wero at a slight ad vance, prices ruling firm for atl in e. then, w ent off JJc. advanced JXc, reacted c ruled steady and closed with a &5c gain. Oats were stronger and higher. Prices ad vanced 5KlKc and closed at nearly outside figures. The strength was attributable to the advance in wheat and corn, and to the pur chases bv a heavy local trader. Mess Pork A moderately active trade was reported. Offenngs wereligh; early. Rather more pressure to sell later, particularly for October, and prices declined 50G0c on the near future and 1215c on the deferred deliveries. Toward the cloe the decline iu prices for the deferred delivery was fnlly recovered. The market closed steady at about medium figures. Lard Not much life was manifested. Changes in prices were slight rather favoring sellers. Short Rib Sides Very little business was transacted. Prices exhibited very little change. All regular customers were accommodated at the usual rates. They said there was plenty for all business purposes, but none to waste, A cashier said: "With money sufficient to kaep all business moving it is useless to specu late and theorize about what has been or what may be. Pittsburg is all right, and is likely to remain so." Exchanges were $2,414,168 04 and balances $342,872 70. A New York financier remarked: "It Is a mistake to suppose that the high rates which prevailed yeiterdav (Tneday) were due to manipulation. The fact is that borrowers held off early in the day, expecting to fill thoirwants at 6 per cent or lower. So many did this that tbe scramble after delivery hour was natural. The banks and trust companies had little to lend." Money on call at New YorK yesterday was tight, ranging from 5 to 17 per cent, last loan 6, closed offered at 4. Prime mercantile paper 79. Dullness and Slngnntion Government and State Bonds Heavy No Life in tbe btrcel Foar Per Cent Bond. Pre- enipd nt the Snb-Trennnry New York, September 10. The dullness in tbe stork market has been most marked to-dav, though in most stocks which have been promi nent through tbe attention paid them by the bears in their efforts to get prices off, were comparatively active and showed considerable movement, while in the general list stagnation was the order of the day. The rally of yester day was still in progress at the opening of busi ness, and materially higher figures were reached in some cases, but the confidence in tbe future, which has of late received such se vere setbacks, was not sufficient to continue tbe buying until prices had been put upon a materially higber plane. Rates for money were still abnormally high and served to check tbe propensity to invest upon the long side, but tbe news that large amounts of the 4 per cents were being pre sented for payment of tbo interest and stamp ing put a damper upon the aggressiveness of the bears as tbe afternoon wore along. There was no news of a character to bave any material influence upon the course of prices, and. after the first demand had been satisfied, prices settled back again and dullness and stagnation soon overspread the whole mar ket, even the leading stocks becoming quiet and motionless nitb the rest of the list. Chi cago dispatches stated that Chicago Gas had compromised its differences with the city, but had had to reduce the price of gas from SI 25 to $1 per 1.000. This wa of such a neutral character that it toot all the life out of tbe stock, and from the leading active specialty it subsided into the most profound dullness, with no movement in either direction. The St. Paul earnings for tbe first week In September were well received, and tbe effect was similar to that in Chicago Gas, but tbe pressure was still kept up on Burlington and Quincy, and in tbe afternoon that stock was hammered down to something below its opening figures. The industrials were almost neglected. The general list developed no feature of interest throughout the day, aud tbe close was dull and heavy at tbe close to the lowest prices of tbe day, tbe declines being for fractional amounts only, and M per cent limit. The earnings con tinue to make an excellent showing, and re ports in to-dav for the first week of September show the following percentages of increase over those of last year: St. Paul, 2: Iowa Central, 9; Wbra'ing and Lake Erie. 23; Milwaukee and Northern Pa cific, 2: Toledo, Ann Arbor and North Michigan, 20, aud Louisville, St. Louis and Texas, 49. Railroad bonds were a little more active through large sales of Oregon Transconti nental os in the lastbour, which amounted to $274,000, helped to make up tbe total to $82Z000 for the day. The market was quite irregular, and while tbe general list showed only a slight and insignificant change, the few important movements were very Irregular. Government bonds have been dull and heavy In tbe 4s. State bonds have been dull and heavy. The .Poji says: Up to 2.30 o'clock over $12,750, 000 of the registered 4 per cent bonds had been presented at the United States sub-Treasury in New York for the prepayment of the three fourths of the interest due respectively on January 1. April 1 and July 1, 1891, thus calling for $382,500. which would otherwise have been held in the Treasury until the dates mentioned. The payment of tbe quarter's interest, due October 1, had already been provided for by checks payable September 22, and so makes tbe payment of the nearest quarter's interest come after that of the otber three, but Judging from tne disbursements at the New York sub-treasury to-day, the total amount of interest now corainc nut of tbe Treasury is approximately $1,000,000 per day, and there is reason to expect that something like this rate will be continued until the whole of the annuil interest on the $505,856,300 of the registered 4 pereents, amount lne to over $20,OUO,000. has been paid. RIVER INTELLIGENCE. High Water Enables Bont to Coma In Considerable ConI Shipped During tbe Dny. Considerable coal was sent out yesterday to Cincinnati and Louisville, and shipments will be continued to-day. .Most of it was taken by the big boats, and tbe smaller ones will be held in reserve to leave to-day, if tbe river shows any inclination to go higher. Heavy rains from points above were reported yesterday, aud it is thought the next few days will see much higber water. The marks registered 7.9 at i r. m. yesterday and rising slowly. The Ship Canal Commission took up the question of low bridges at their meeting, and it is probable some action will be taken In regard to bavins bridges on tbe Allegheny raised in the event of the French creek route being decided upon by the commission. ' The fleet with empties from below arrived during the day. Much difficulty was experi enced securing deck hands, as usual. The crews were paid off, and they all started out to bave a good time. The consequence was that half of those that came up aud received their money wound up in tbe lockup, and tbe others were "out ot sight." "those who are able to go out demand exhorbitant salaries, and the shippers granted their demands rather than hold tbe boats back. A prominent way opera tor said that the shipment which will amount to about 3.500.000 bushels, will not affect tbe market at Cincinnati very much. Seven and one-half cents is tbe price asked, and it is paid willingly, despite tbe fact that a great amount of coal is comine out of the Kanawha. Drlftwrood. One or the river correspondents Is the biggest winner. The John F. Walton made the biggest dash in tbe harbor yesterday. She had a good-sized tow, and the other boats which passed along side of her looked Ilka mere cockle shells. Louisville Is her destination. United States Mabshal Darraqh states that the Joseph Nixon will be sold by him some time this week, but thus far the sale has not been advertised as the law required.
