ISflpl 3gpj?j7THr 7 THE PITTSBURG DISPATCH, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBEB 3, 189a Tf 3 "f AT THBf CODHTr FAIB. The First and Only Allegheny Agri- cultural Exhibition and Races START OUT IN EXCELLENT SHAPE. A Large Crowd Present at the Opening Day of a Creditable Show. THE INTERESTING TRIALS OP SPEED Hurrah for the county fair! "Who wouldn't go? A delightful ride up the Al legheny river to Tarentum; a joyous whirl from the station behind spirited steeds to the fairgrounds of the Tarentum Agricultural and Driving Pare Association, one mile beyond- Yesterday was the first day of the first fair, and was such a success that the officers of the association retired last evening to dreams of wondrous wealth and glory to accrue from the continuation and perpetuation of the fair and the association. The gates were opened at 7 o'clock in the morning, and any num. ber of wagons, heavily loaded with wonderful specimens of the vegetable and animal kingdom, passed through in rapid succession, and were quickly relieved of th?irlnteresting burdens that appeared to better advantage in pens and places es pecially designed for them, while horse after horse of unquestionable lineage and blue blood, carefully covered with gaily colored blankets, were led by attentive grooms to temporary abodes, and cow after co w of haughty mien traversed with stately step the arena leading from the main en trance to the homes prepared for them, in which they assumed picturesque poses for the benefit of the visiting public Tbe exhibits exceeded, even yesterday, the most sanguine expectations of the pro jectors of the fair, and the merry sound of the hammer and the buzz of the carpenter's saw erecting extra stalls and booths mingled all day long with the merry-go-round, the gay .shouts of the energetic fakirs, and the different calls of the many animals and fowls.. SOME OF THE ENTRIES. There were preponderous beets, cabbages, potatoes, and everything in that line en tered; also grains and tempting fruits, and chickens of every variety, noted for every thing under the sun, feathers, eggs and flesh; turkeys that suggested Thanksgiving even at thisearly date; pigs, both little and big, and sheep of every dye and wool. In the woman's department in Floral Hall could be seen quilts of thessne and crazy variety, tidies of every kind, toilet sets, mantel scarfs, sideboard covers, pin cushions, chair cushions, bead rests, darned net patterns and everything in fine needle work that skillful needlewomen attempt, beside preserves, jellies and pickles, sweet, sour and spiced; cakes and breads all entered for prizes, and all meriting prizes. Other exhibits of a more private nature in Floral Hall testify to the enterprise of the business firms of Tarentum and make it a very attractive place, an es pecially pretty corner, being the result of a flora exhibit, that not only beautifies the entire hall, but lends a sweet fragrance to the place. The attendance yesterday was such that it surprised and delighted the management, and the dusty roads a necessary feature to a successful lair were lined lrom morning till night with conveyances of all kinds, carrying the visitors to and from tbe lair grounds. Tnere was the substantial farmer, with his family all arrayed in holiday attire, with well-filled lunch baskets behind the usually steady horses that imbibed the spirit of the occasion and pranced alrhoit as gaily as the more spirited steed driven by the young man with his best girl, who was there in great num. bers. And who did not enjoy fried chicken and home delicacies from lunch baskets? But any number of city folks partook of an excellent dinner in the dining hall provided by the association. AJIOSC THE EXHIBITS. The morning was spent in viewing and interviewing the exhibits, one of which was especially interesting to the younger portion of the visitors, as it was a dearlittlebaby calf, not 24 hours old, and named R.S.P. McCall. But the inspiriting strains ot the Silver Cornet Band from Xatrono shortly after 1 o'clock created a general stampede for the grand stand, before which the fantastically capped jockies were coaxing, petting and speeding their favorites, that shortly were to match their steps in the races. The first race was a 2-year-old trot, in half-mile heats, for a purse of 830, There were six entries Beulah T, Jim, Monta Lee, G. D. Prentice, Mollie Chigh and "Wilkes Pine. The last named carried off the purse amid the enthusiastic cheers of the spectators. The second race was a 4-year-old pace, with Laura Bell, Billie Oberlin, Darter and John C entered, and was won by John C. The 3-year-old trot was won by Ala manzor, Daisy X, Nancy E and Homewood being left in the rear, while he passed triumphantly under tbe wire. To-day there will be four races a running race, three-minute trot, 2:40 class, and a stallion race, a trot Cattle, sheep and swine will also be judged, and there will be a magnificent horse show, composed of all the horses on the ground, in grand caval cade on the track at 3 r. Hokne & Co.'s Penn Avenue Stores, WILL VISIT OSCEOLA, Coroner McDowell's Jury lo Go to the Scene of tbe Baltimore nnd Ohio Wreck The Cross Ties Were Pushed Along; tho Track for Three Miles. The Coroner's jury will visit the scene of the Baltimore and Ohio wreck near Osceola station, August 14, to-day. Considerable testimony was heard yesterday at the in quest, and tbe latter will probably be con cluded to-morrow. Thomas JIcGovem, conductor of the train, testified that as the train was leaving Mc Keesport on the evening ot the accident he saw a man jump on the baggage car. This man was afterward identified as Hersha, one of those who were killed in the wreck. The witness felt the air being applied to the brakes shortly after 10 o'clock, and be lieving something was wrong started forward. As he did so he felt the jar of the cars in front of him leaving the tracks, and suddenly the entire train came to an abrupt standstill. No jar was felt before the air was turned on. "When the conductor hastened to the front of the train he saw tbe engine thrown from the track, three sleepers and the baggage car derailed. Two cross, ties were found in a shattered condition near the engine. Both bore the imprint of rails, and were burned by the friction of the rails, indicating that they had been pushed along the track tor some distance. Ex-Superintendent Patton, of the Balti more and Ohio, testified that he went to the scene and examined the shattered ties. He then went back three miles on the track and discovered a number ot chips and splinters near the rails, showing that it was at that point that the ties had been placed. He testified there bad been no ties transported over that section of the road for 24 hours previous to the accident; that the only ties in the neighborhood were a few near Osce ola, which were reserved for repairing. He said Goodwin was riding contrary to the or ders of the company and had no business on the locomotive. The accident be believed was the results of au intention to wreck the train. J. C King, fireman of the train, testified that Goodwin appeared to be an acquaint anceof Sullivan,' and got on the engine at Pittsburg. Shortly alter leaving McKees port Goodwin, who was looking ont of the window, remarked suddenly that the engine had struck several ties and was pushing them. The engineer then applied the air and shortly afterward the accident hap pened. J. 'N. Kalbaugb, master mechanic of the road, explained that the ties after being struck and pushed along the track were worn by the friction, and thereby be came low enough to fall under the boat head of the pilot and from thence under the wheels, causing the wreck. The jury will visit the scene of the wreck this afternoon, and will likely conclude the inquest to morrow morning. CROWDED THE PAROCHIAL SCHOOL. The Effects of Father Lamblng's Warning Plainly Visible. There is considerable excitement among tbe Catholic population of "Wilkinsburg over the determined stand taken by Eev. A. A. Lambing, of St James' Church, with regard to the attendance of the children of the congregation at the parochial school. All over the Pittsburg diocese there has been an earnest effort on the part of the priesthood to bring to the parochial schools children that have hitherto shown symptoms of backsliding to the ward schools. Father Lambing said on Sunday that he should re fuse absolution to any parents or guardians who did not send their children to the Cath olic school. The result of this threat was noted yesterday morning, when there was a very large attendance much larger than last year when the school opened. One thing that is expected to increase the usefulness of, as well as attendance at, St James' school is the fact that the Sisters of Charity have established a home for them selves in Wilkinsburg, and will thus be able to give closer attention to educational matters there than heretofore. They intend to give private lessons in music, painting,, etc, in addition to teaching in the parochial school. The lawn fete given by the ladies of St James Church a few weeks ago real ized S350 lor the building fund. ' a t COLLUSION CHARGED. An Injunction Suit to Prevent the Safe of the City Poor -Farm. PLAINTIFF A REAL ESTATE MAN He Says There Was No Real Competition Be tween the Bidders, and THAT THE C1TX HAS SO' BIGHT TO SELL City Solicitor Moreland called on Mayor Gourley yesterday about noon, with the deed for the sale of the Poor Farm property and asked the Mayor to sign it His Honor had been served with a notice a few minutes before, to restrain him from signing the deed, and he was not in condition at the time to sign anything. "When the Major offered him the paper, Major Gourley re fused to attach his signature to it, and by a combination of circumstances he may be successful in his opposition to tbe sale of th3 farm, and the purchase of the Stewart ground at twice its alleged actual value. A bill in equity was filed yesterday by Charles L. Straub and those who might choose to join with him against the City of Pittsburg, H. I. Gourley, Mayor, Bobert Elliot, Chief of the Department of Public Charities, and M. I. Baird, and Carnegie,' Phipps & Co. It is alleged that the Poor Farm at present owned by the city was pur chased with money assessed and derived from the taxpayers by an act providing for the relief and employment of the poor. In pursuance of an ordinance passed July 12, 1890, which, it is claimed, is illegal. Chief Elliot advertised the sale of the old Poor Farm. In pursuance of the ordinance bids were made and the farm put up for sale. There was an understanding, it is asserted, between the bidders, who knew the amount of each other's bid, and therefore there was no competition, and the bids were not bona fide. The bidders were Joshua Rhodes, Carnegie, Phipps & Co., and M. I. Baird, but, it is claimed, the bids were only for the appearance of competition to M. I. Baird. Chief Elliott declared that Mr. Baird, whose bid was (2,903 per acre, a total of 5419,425 44, was the highest and best bidder, and that the farm should be sold to him. The plaintiff claims that there was an un derstanding between the bidders, and there fore no competition, except for appearance' sake. Baird, it is asserted, only bid for tbe interest of Carnegie, Phipps & Co., Limited, and in consequence it is asked that it be de creed that the city, Mayor Gonrley and Chief Elliott have no authority to sell the property, and that an injunction be issued restraining the issuing of any deed to Carnegie, Phipps & Co. or other parties. Mayor Gonrley said: ""When the Guardians ot the Poor were legislated out of office by the new city charter they deeded the Poor Farm to the city. I do not think there was any collusion between the bid ders." Health, Habits and Manners of Boys. The list of members for the second series, B, of the Everett piano clubs, is filling up at a wonderlul rate, and the manager ex pects to commence delivering the pianos to this club in a very few weeks. The system is now pretty well understood, and offers so many inducements in low prices and ac commodating terms of payment that appli cations for membership are pouring in from all points. There fs nothing of the lottery kind in the system, and every intelligent mind can see and appreciate the great re duction in price obtained by contracting for tbe great number of pianos it takes to sup ply the clubs, 350 each, making 700 pianos. The manager is a practical piano maker and well-known business man, and purchasers can rely on the piano selected being the best that skill and money can produce. They are indorsed by over 9,000 purchasers who are using them in this and other parts of the country. Do not fail to see the piano, or send for circular to the manager. Look for the display at the Exposition. Alex. Boss, 137 Federal street, Allegheny. The club piano this week goes to Eev. K. H. McKinley, Clearfield, Pa., on payments of 51 per week.
