Expert Discussion as to the Usefulness of
Lijhtninj: Rods. ,
EITEAC1IKG IRON FiU)M SEA BAUD
irsTASD TOE TB SIIPXTCH.1
A singular device has been brought oat
in England, to wit, an attachment lor appli
cation to gravestones, vaults, etc, for dis
playing photographs, and for holding visit
ing, monrnieg, or memorial card, fluwert
and similar articles. Photographs of the de
ceased, or suitable mottoes, are attached to a
disc, revolving by means of a button project
ing irom the face of theapparatusattheback
of the device, which is fixed on to the head
stone or vault. A small lock-up box -with a
glared front is also attached to the face of
the disc, tbe aaid box being provided with a
longitudinal slit for the reception ot visit
ing, memorial, or mourning cards, and with
a shade or canopy or hinged sloping roof
over tbe slit to prevent the rain, snow, etc.,
from euterinir the box through the slit.
Double vases are secured to brackets on the
. face ol the device, the inner vase beinc
water-tight lor the purpose of holding cut
flowers, the outer vase being perforated to
enable trailing plants to grow over the sides,
ana thus to mitigate the plainness of the
tombstone. A hook is fixed just above the
top of tbe ring for the .urjo of hanging a
wreath upon. There are people in the
world whose tastes run to this kind of thing,
end to such this new device will be acceptable.
Weighing- cale
A somewhat remarkable pair of scales for
weighing large parcels of silver bullion
have just been completed in England, to
tbe order of tbe Indian Government, lor use
in tbe Bombay mint Tbe beam of the in
strument is a plain forging' in wrouebt iron
11 inches deep in tbe center and 3f inches
st the spriugiug of the end boxes which
carry the knife edees for supporting the
pans, the thickness being alto tapered from
1 inches in the center to scinch at tbe end
ot the arms. The total length of the beam
between the points of suspension oi tbe
pans is six feet. The pans are square plat
forms covered with copper, their weigbt
being about one hundred pounds each, end
that of tbe beam four hundred pounds.
"When tested empty the addition of one-sixteenth
of an avoirdupois ounce was sufficient
to defied the index through the whole range
of the powenul scale, and when loaded
with five hundred and fifty pounds on each
scale, under which condition the load on
the central kui e edge is about fourteen
hundred pounds, a deflection of tour divis
ion is produced by one gramme, which cor
responds approximately to 1-280,000 of tbe
load to be determined, a decree 01 suscepti
bility that is vrry remarkable in a machine
of such size and power.
Llchmlnc Cads.
The question of the decree to which light
ning rods can be relied on to afford protec
tion has just been discussed belore the Lon
don Institution. The ultimatum arrived at
seems to be that in all cases of steady strain
in which a charged cloud descending from
the upper regions of the air, or approaching
from a distance, might inflict serious injury
upon an unprotected building, a well-designed
and properly earth-connected light
ning rod is an absolute safeguard. In a
case ot "impulsive rush" tbe rod may o ten
be of use in bearing the brunt ol the dis
charge, though sometimes the lightning
will take no notice whatever of it, striking
the building and altogether neglecting the
rod, and it is even possible that a high
rod might attract a destructive discharge
which otherwise would not have orcurred
Bt all. Although, therefore, a lightning
rod is in many cases, probably in a verv
large majority, oi the greatest service, it
cannot be depended npon as affording per
fect immunity from risk, and the assump
tion which has universally been made bv
"the older eledricinns" that damage by
lightning is in itself conclusive evidence of
some imperfection in tbe conductor is an
Unfounded one.
StnttttlcK on Railways.
Some valuable statistics or the railways
of the United States have been given by
the statistician of the Inter-State Commis
sion in his report for the year ending June
30, 1S9D. TJuder the caption of "Men Em
ployed on Bailways," are some very Inter
esting figures, showing that the railroads
in mis country give direct employment to
704,743 workers, averaging 459 to each 100
miles oi road. Another table is presented,
showing in contrast that the number of
employes on English railways amounts to
1,748 per 100 miles of road, or about four to
one, as compared with this country. In
this connection the statistician makes sig
nificant re'erence to the number of railway
Occidents from all causes for the year, the
dumber of persons killed and injured being
respectively 5,823 and 26.S09. Th tables
presented emphasize with 'tremendous force
thenecessity lor immediate and stringent
legislation in tbe way of safety appliances.
Iran From Sea Snnd.
Among the numerous magnetic beparators
which have lately been put before pnblie
one of the most remarkable is that for the
extraction of iron from sea sand. It is stated
'that ordinary sea sand contains from 6 to 7
- rer cent of iron, enough, in fact, to give a
large excess over cost ot extraction. The
machine is very simple, consisting or a cyl
inder, whose surface is composed ol electto
Jiiagnets, revolving on the inside o au end
less canvas belt Tbe sand is fed to the
lelt, and a sprav of water separate the parti
cles, the iron being retained by the power
mi electro-magnets, and carried off on the
belt to a receptacle at the other end, while
- the sand falls into tbe trough below. It is
claimed that the iron can thus be extracted
for about one-eighth of its value.
Iinprovrd "Ironing Machine.
Many of the leading firms of collar and
cuff manufacturers in England are using an
improved machine for the ironing and pol
ishing of all sbapes of linen cuffs, collars,
and fronts, as well as fronts with collars at
tached. The top roller is of highly polished
steel, and is heated internally with gas and
sir. In the tront end of tbe heated roller is
inserted a perforated plate which admits air
end allows the surplus heat to escape. The
bottom dram has its surface padde 1, and is
brought by a lever into contact with tbe
heated roller, a hand wheel underneath be
ing used for varying the pressure on the
crude under operation.
Barothermotclcrartar.
The invention of an instrument to which
the namebarothermotelemeter has been given
is announced. Its purpose is to enable ob
servers to take readings as often as desired,
and by a single wire, from barometers and
thermometers placed at great heights or dis
tances, without tbe necessity of the observer
being resident where the instruments ire
placed, therebr saving much expense, and
enabling observations to be taken at points
where residence might be impossible.
Excavator Ornba.
A asefnl addition to a dredging plant is
in use in California. Excavator "crabs"
are slung on "booms" or spars, more than
',100 feet long and operated entirely by steam
t power, making trips in Irom one and half
jto two minutes' time, and raising at each
,-operation more than two tons of crave!,

Regimental Field-Telegraph.
An ingenious field telegraph has been in
vented by an English judge. The coils of
donble insulated wire, giving a complete
metallic circuit, wound on bobbins, are
supported on tbe backbones of two bicycles.
Six poles, to enable the troops to carry
the wires over roads, are supported
over th handles of the bicycles, which are
trundled one in front of the other. When
the wire is to be lajd, the bobbins
are taken off and carried on the hack, and
wound off, a special rapid coupling being
provided in case of necessity. When on
the road the poles can be thrown off, and
the bicycles mounted, so that tbe instru
ments and the conducting wires can be car
ried off and saved from capture.
Haw Stofflna for Seats.
A new fabric has been devised which is
intended for use In stuffing car seats and
backs in tbe place of curled hair. This
fabric is quilted by a knitting process, and
is quite different in appearance from any
other textile fabric manufactured. The
filling is carried and oonfined in an un
twisted state, thus securing the softness of
the natural fiber. Each seotion of filling is
placed in separate pockets. It is not lonnd
to mat or harden, and it is claimed that the
cost is much Jess than that of cnrled hair, as
tbe laoor in upholstering is greatly dimin
ished, and the back ot the. plush is much
less liable to be cut. The fabric is also
used for ma tresses, pillows, bolsters, table
padding, and lor all npbolstery purposes.
It is made in thicknesses of from Inches
to S inches.
Bending; Bbov.l Handles. ,
The large proportion ot shovel handles,
usually about 75 per cent, which are split
or broken in the process of bending, has led
the invention ot a shovel bending machine.
The saving effected may be estimated from
the fact that In a trial lot of 25 doxen put
through the machine, only one handle was
spoiled.
