SHOW W SIGISS OF IMPfiOYEMENT.
A Feir Prime Beeves From Ohio at the East
Liberty lards.
CHOICE EHEEf AND SWINE SCAECE
Omra op The Pittsburg Dispatch, I
Wednesday Augusta), 1690.
On Monday there were 109 loads of cattle
on the market at the East Liberty yards, the
bulk of which were from the near "Western
States, principally from Ohio and Indiana.
There were a few from Kentucky and 20
loads from Chicago. Since the beginning of
the week abont six loads have been received,
making a total for the week of 115, against
90 loads last week. The quality or this
week's offerings varied very little from that
oi recent average. There was one carload
of primes from Ohio, the first for some
weeks past, weighing 1,550 pounds, which
sold readily at 4c, and in a retail way no
doubt brought 5c per pound. A half dozen
loads of good, but not strictly prime,
cattle from Indiana were on the
market. Supply ot light, tidy butchers'
beeves, such as our markets call for,
were scarce, as usual. Market opened Monday
morning strong 10 to 15c higher than the pre
vious week on all good grades. Common and
low grades opened a shade stronger than last
week, but soon lost their strength and dropped
back into the old groove. There were 12 to 15
loads shipped on in first hands of the coarse
heavy or inferior grades. This morning there
were abont three loads left In the pens unsold.
The cost of beeves ottered this week ranged
from 25c to 40c per cwt higher in Chicago,
and as the advance here was far below this, it
is presumable that margins to drovers must
have been very narrow, if indeed there were
any left.
Sheep, Lnmbs nnd Swine.
The run ot sheep for the week has been light
and quality generally poor. There was very
little fancy stock on the market. Total re
ceipts for the week were about 20 loads. Mar
kets were strong at last week's prices, and
choice lambs, of which there were not very
many offered, brought better prices than a
week ago. Good stock is evidently being with
held from markets. There were in this week's
run a few loads of open wool sheep from Mis
souri, which were sold at H SO. Price of sheep
ranged from 3 to 5c the latter being ob
tained onlr for a few very choice. Lambs
ranged in price from 4c to 6c per lb. One extra
bunch only brought the latter figure.
There ere about four loads of bogs on sale
this morning, the bulk of which were grassers.
Tbe tew corn-fed on the market were steady at
a range otM 15 to H 25. Grassers ranged in
price from S3 to $3 75 and were very slow.
There is little demand tor the latter grade.
low nrice on these is the only Inducement to
the buyer. Tbe range on grassers is very ide,
being affected by condition, qualitv, and weight.
Advices from Chicago to nur packers this"
morning show an advance of 5c on hogs there,
the top price being 4 10.

conservative trading foots up a large dally

is drawing to a close with results averaging a
fair business, but with little profit to mill

in Belter Keenest.
CHICAGO Wheat There was large trad
ing again to-day and the market was active.
The feeling was decidedly unsettled and fever
ish. There was more nervousness on the part
of the traders on account of the many sudden
and very frequent fluctuations, and operators
were considerably puraled at tbe course of the
market. Interests centered chiefly in the De
cember future, which opened llKo lower
than yesterday's closing, eased K6JC more,
and then started np irregularly, price advanc
inglc declined lJic, again advanced selling
to the outside range, then broke off lKc
fluctuated and closed IJfc lower than yester
day. The weakness and unsettled feeling were
dneto general realizing, local traders selling
quite freely.
Corn There was an easier feeling manifested
and lower prices were established. A fair busi
ness was transacted, most of which was in Sep
tember and May, there being a good deal of
changing between these months, buying at the
latter and selling the former at 4c difference.
Fair trades in the speculative market were at
XQ'tic. decline, after which the roirket sold off
slightly, then rallied, advancing 6c, reacted
3cand closed with a fitijic decline,
Oats There was a good trade, but a weak
and unsettled feeling prevailed most of the day.
There was less disposition to buy and more to
selL Tbe opening was easy at Hc decline.
After a further slight recession, a firmer feel
ing developed, and prices advanced KSJiC
The free selling toward the close by a prom
inent trader, coupled with the weakness in
wheat and corn, caused a decline of If acand
the market closed easy at about inside figures.
Mess Pork Trading was moderately active in
mess pork, and almost exclusively in January
and May contracts. Opening sales were made
at 1012Kc decline, but tbe market grew
stronger with a good inquiry, and prices were
advanced 2022c Toward the close the
feeling was easier again, and prices settled
back 2o30c and closed steady.
Lard A fairly active trade was reported.
There was some pressure to sell early in the
day, and opening transactions indicated a de
cline of 22c- At this reduction the de
mand Impioved and prices rallied S7c on a
good business, especially for January delivery.
Toward tbe close the market was not so strong
and prices weakened 25c, and closed steady.
Short Rib Sides Tbe market attracted con
siderable speculative attention, and trading
was quite active. Opening sales were made at
2Kc decline, and a further reduction ot 2c was
reached, but prices rallied 710c, but settled
back and closed steady.

THE NEWS AND GOSSIP OF TEE GUI
Leaders in business are as necessary jts in
politic or anything else. Without officers
an army wonld be a mob. They not only
point the way, bnt inspire confidence. This
is as true of real estate as of any other inter
est. A level-headed, enterprising man by go
ing into a neglected district and making lib
eral investments will often start a movement
which will carry everything before it and
revolntiouize a neighborhood. Improve
ments spring up and activity takes the place of
lethargy. Well-directed energy will remove
mountains of difficulty.
While Pittsburg capitalists have shown com
mendable enterprise in opening up new terri
tory and large bodies of land to home-seekets,
they have not succeeded in covering the field.
There is a great deal of acreage that should be
brought Into the market. Iherelsno danger
of overdoing the business. Demand will grow
as the supply Is enlarged.
It is not necessary to designate tbe districts
that should receive early attention. Some of
them are in the city limits; others are In the
suburbs The development of new territory
has so far proved financially successful, arid
there Is no known reason why equally good re
sults should not attend future operations in
tbe same direction.
The real estate interest has passed the criti
cal period of the year without a break or the
least symptom of weakness, and is in excellent
condition for a revival. There is plenty ot
material to work on, so that going to Chicago
or elsewhere to make investments is practical
disloyalty to Pittsburg.

DOWN THEY GO.
Pennsylvania and Buckeye OH Run Aaninst
a Sawyer Light Trading.
Oil was weak all along the line yesterday.dne
to the fact that there more sellers than buyers.
Buckeye opened with a show of strength, but
went off on selling orders from New York. The
decline was by easy stages, tbe principal slump
occurring in tbe last few minutes of the ses
sion. v
The weakness was by some attributed to a
natural reaction from the rapid gait of the two
preceding days, but others professed to see the
band of the Standard in the downturn. A
broker remarked; "Today's figures are aDout
right In view of what the Standard Is said to be
paying. Outsiders do not relish giving a fancy
price for tne privilege ot dealing in the com
modity." The range of fluctuations was: Opening and
bigUest, 40; lowest and closing, 38. Tbe pre
vious close was 41. Trading was spasmodic
there being a little along as the market worked
down. Tuesday's clearances were 70,000 barrels.
Pennsylvania oil was somewhat bullish at the
start, but the market declined on light busi
ness and closed at tbe lowest point ot the day,
and Vi cents below the initial quotation. The
slump was due to the same causes that affected
Buckeye. At least nothing else could be sur
mised. Tuesday's clearanoes wero 10.CO0 barrels.

THE BEARS CHECKED.
Tbo Treasury Offer Creates Some Consterna
tion Wnlting to Ascertain the Effect
of It The Market Closes
Dull nnd Heavy
New Yoke, August 20. The circular of the
Treasury Department Issued late last evening,
in regard to the purchase of tbe 4 per cents,
was a check for tbe time being upon the opera
tions of tbe bears and -carried, for tbe time
belng,oonsiderable anxiety into their ranks.
While there were grave doubts expressed by
some financial authorities that any large
amount of bonds could be secured owing to the
fact that they are held so largely by institutions
for special purposes, the immediate effect upon
the stock market was one of stimulation in the
matter of prices. A large number of the weaker
bears hastened to cover, and at the opening
this morning tbe demand from the shorts was
urgent enough to open the active stocks from
X to per cent higher than they closed last
eyenlng. The movement was soon exhausted,
however, and further advances were slight.
The disposition to ttade was never at a lower
ebb, all preferring to await tbe outcome of the
offer of tbe Secretary. The offerings as an
nounced at noon were, to say tbe least, rather
disappointing to tbe bulls, but the threat that
If this means should fail to get the money out
of the Treasury other means would be taken
acted still as a restricting influence upon opera
tions 011 the short side, and tbe dullness for the
remainder of the day was most intense.
The offerings ot to-morrow are now awaited
wltbanxiet), and if larger tban to-day's may
bring some improvement in prices, but if not a
resumption of the late hammering may be ex
pected. There was less beard about the strikes
to-day, and the crop news received was, if any
thing, more favorable, which should hare en
couraged the bulls, bnt the high rates for
money were still maintained, and 25 per cent
loans are not inviting to the would-Do specu
lator. In tbe afternoon tbe bears showed
some encouragement In consequence of the
small offeriugs of bonds under the circular,
and more animation in tbe market was accom
panied by some recession in in prices. The
movements were generally slight, only Oregon
Transcontinental receipts dropped 1 per cent,
while Lackawanna and Sugar Refineries lost
fractional amounts. The market finally closed
dull and .heavy generally at slight concessions
from tbe opening prices. Wall street, both
yesterday and to-day, has bad a severe test,
and Ittas been shown that tbere is still a very
strong undertone and a scant supply of stocks.
The final changes are generally slight ad
vances, but Canada PaciHo rose 1,
and tbere are a few fractional losses.
Ibe railroad bond market still remains very
dull, and without features of importance and
no pronounced tone, although tbe changes to
day were generally in the direction of lower
figures among those of importance. The sales
were only $146,000. with no special animation
anywhere in tne list. Long Island fives lost 2
at 112, while the-only advance of note was Ten
nessee C6al, Birmingham Division, sixes 5 to 98.
Government bonus have been dull and strong.
State bonds have been dull and featureless.
Tbe Post says: The Secretary -offers to buy
the bonds, paying par for tbe principal and all
interest up to May 31, 1891. It is, in fact, an of
fer of only 1 03, or c advance over 1 02
paid for tbe bonus last week. A large part at
these bonds are no donbt held by fiduciary in
stitutions as a perfectly guaranteed security
rather than an interest paying investment, and
it will require every Inducement the Secretary
can offer to bring this capital out of the state of
limbo into tbe money market again, and there
fore he should not try to make two bites ot a
cherry.
While money on call touched 30 per cent per
annum to-day in tne New York stock market.
It was 3Ji to 3K lor bankers' Dalances In Lon
don, and yet tuis enormous difference caused
no change In tbe "rates of sterling exchange.
There is no doubt that tbe stringency here has
been aggravated by the banks and trust com
panies. They have a donble purpose to serve.
First, they get bigb rates for tbelr money
from day to day, and next they expect to make
the Secretary of tbe Treasuary buy tbelr bonds
at tbe highest price in order to relieve the
money market; though for that matter be
seems to have no alternate except to bid tbe
highest prices.

Considerable Activity Displayed Abont the

In tbe Senate Saturday the amendment to
the river and harbor bill, providing for an ap

gahela above Morgantown, was agreed to. The
amendment to increase the appropriation to
complete the Little Kanawha dam was also re
ported. This will be a great benefit to naviga

the local operators and river pilots, held at the
office of Captain John A. Wood, the places
needing earliest attention were designated and
a copy of tbe recommendations was forwarded
to Colonel Merrill, of the snagboat Woodruff.
Colonel Merrill proposes pushing the work to

dangerous place between hern and Cincinnati.
Harbor boats were active yesterday towing
coal from the upper pool. The Brownsville

Country Prodnce Jobbing Prices.
The movement ol choice dairy products con
tinues active and prices are on the advance.
Fancy Elgin creamery butter cannot now be
laid down hero much nnder 24c, and our prices
are advanced, in accordance with the facts of
the case. Ohio cheese is firm at a shade higher
prices, and New York cheese is steady. Choice
nearby eggs are very firm at outside quota
tions, and single cases are selling at lc above
this figure. Potatoes are in good supply, but
choice stock sells readily at quotations. Water
melons are plenty and cheap. Very large-sized
melons from Missouri are selling at S20$25 per
hundred. Said a leading produce commission
merchant: ''We have no trouble selllngchoice
fruits and vegetables as fast as we can get
them. Poor stock is not wanted at any price.
but everything of high grade and good quality.
moves promptly." urapes are scarce ior tne
past few days. Damson plums and mountain
blackberries are on the market, and demand
for both is good.

Groceries.
The long looked-f or rise in coffee has not as
yet put in an appearance, bnt it cannot be
much longer delayed. Other staples in grocery
lines are moving freely, and the whole tendency
of markets is toward a higher level. Retail
grocers are laying in heavy stooks In tbe faith
that delay is dangerous at this juncture. In
view of the upward drift, it Is better to buy
heavily now than to pay more later on. Job
bers have no need to push trade as it pushes
itself. Said a leading wholesale grocer: "Our
goods are worth more to us than the money,
and the active trade of the past month has
been more to oar detriment than to our ad
vantage from a financial standpoint. Goods
are moving out too freely for comfort.
