PROGRAMMES FOE THE OCCASION.
Ttto Magnificent Concerts Promised, and
1 10,000 People Expected.
BUYER LIKE GEOYE TO BE A EOWEE
"Waying valms, magnifioent ferns, bright
flowers, myriads of glistening electric and
incandescent lights blended -with the modest
Klow of Japanese lanterns, sweet music and
throngs of handsome men and women, will
characterize the twelfth anniversary of the
Improved Order ot Heptasophs as the
greatest day of its existence in Allegheny
county. The anniversary will be celebrated
at Silver Lake Grove, just one week from
to-day.
In the afternoon, axoncert will be given,
from 2 o'clock until 4, and another in the
evening, from 7:30 to 950. After each
concert there will be dancing. The pavilion
will present a remarkable scene of beauty,
with its rich decoration of plants and
flowers, together with the vari-colored
lights. It is intended to expend about
51,200 in decorating the place.
Last year 8,000 people were present at the
anniversary and this year 10,000 people are
expected. There are now 1,800 members'.of
the order in Allegheny county, and a targe
number of members and their families are
expected from the outside. The Executive
Committee in charge hare been somewhat
worried with questions as to whether there
wilf be any.cbarge for invited guests. They
announce that there will be no charge what
ever. All that is required is to present an,
invitation at the gate. The invitation in
cludes the holder and whatever friends he
may have with him.

mayor Gourley to Tko the Trip When Bis
Terra U Up Lee Johnsod Applies fori
Papers to Enable Him to Get Back to
This Country.
Lee Johnson, the Chinaman who is going
back to China on a visitcalled at the May
or's office yesterday and asked Mayor Gour
ley for a letter to enable him to get back to
America. Under the recent Chinese act a
Chinaman who has been here for 60 years
runs agood chance of not getting back to this
country, while on a visit home, unless he is
provided with the necessary papers. The
Mayor fixed Mr. Johnson up all right by
giving him a letter to which was attached
the great seal of the city of Pittsburg. The
bright impression itself would fill one with
awe, and it is not likely the Chinaman will
have any trouble.
While writing the letter. Mayor Gourley
imagined himself seated in a palanquin,
and being transported through the flowery
kingdom by a couple of fleet-footed coolies.
The idea suggested itself to him to take a
trip to China, which His Honor says he
will do when his term of office is up. He
said: '"Like everybody else, I have in my
mind's eye a trip, which I propose to take
as soon as my term of office is up. I would
like to go to England first and then across
the channel to Ireland. I will take a
coaching tour through Ireland and Scot
land, and I will bet I will have more
enjoyment out of that trip than
any I can conceive. After the coaching
tour I will go all through Europe and will
spend a month in Italy. I have a desire to
'do' France and will spend considerable
time ia Paris. From Paris I will go to
Venice and then by P. & O. boat to Alex
andria. I want to see the catacombs and
the ruins of the bombardment. Then I will
go through the Suez Canal to Bombay or
Calcutta, and from there to Singapore. I
will not stay long at the last place, but will
jump down to China or Japan. After see
ing everything there is in the land of flowers
I will return home by way of San Fran
cisco. In the "West I expect to see many
things that cannot be witnessed outside of
the United States."

A New Blrxlco Citizen Wanted to Trade In
the Latest Pittibors Prodoct.
Superintendent of Police Gamble Weir
yesterday received a letter from Albu
querque, N. Mex., asking for information in
regard to a sew dog button supposed to have
been made and used by the Superintendent.
The writer stated that he had read m The
Dispatch an account of the wonderfully
rapid extermination of dogs in this city, by
the use of the new button, and wanted to
know the secret of its manufacture. The
vicinity in which the writer lived, it was
stated, was overrun with dogs, and every
scheme imaginable had been tried to get rid
of them, but without success.
Mr. Weir was asked the price of his
buttons, and requested to send S00 C. O. D.
to Albuquerque. The letter will be answered
to-day, and will be framed as a memento of
the recent local war against homeless curs.

EXIT OF OLD PLANS.
Entire Change in tne Design of the
Sew Dnqnesne Theater.
FKONT WILL HOT BE TORN DOWN.
Important Meeting Held by the Managers
to Consider the -New Move. ,
OPENING DAM EAELI IN N0YEMBEE
In spite of the statement that the building
inspector had demanded that the front of the
old Jackson building be torn down, it is now
given out that the walls are all right and
will stand just as they are, to be used in the
construction of the new Dnqnesne Theater.
Further, entirely new plans have been sub
mitted by a new architect, and yesterday
Manager ' Henderson, Mr, Jackson and a
New York architect held a long consultation,
amid the ruins on Penn avenue, in regard
to the sudden change in the construction of
the building.
In speaking of the, new move Manager
Henderson said: "The story that the frontof
the Jackman building had been condemned
is false. The front will remain. The in
spector says it is all right A portico will
be built over it, but no other marked changes
will be made on it "Work on the building
will not be completed until late in the fall.
"We cannot open October 2 as we had hoped,
but the house will be ready for the public
four or five weeks later if it costs a million
dollars.
CONDEMNED THE "WALLS.
"One of the petty difficulties that have
retarded the progress of the Dnqnesne The
ater was the unsatisfactory character of the
plans submitted by Mr. Allen. We have
been forced to refuse his work on account of
various things. First, the walls of his pro
posed elevation were in direct conflict with
the building laws of the city. They did
not come within the proper lines and were
totally unsafe. That was not the only
thing. His ideas of the general plan of the
house did not coincide with our views. Mr.
Allen has not made a specialty of this line
of architecture, so far as I know, and we
differed with him as to the best
methods of putting up a solid, sub
stantial structure. I understand that
Hamlin's Theater, ot Brooklyn, which
he planned, has been condemned by the
authorities, owing to the dangerous walls.
The building is pronounced unsafe, and, of
course, we want to avoid anything ot that
kind, and consequently have decided to
seek plans elsewhere, for the Dnqnesne.
ENTIEELT SEW MODEL.
"One of the most noted architects in the
country, who makes theatrical work a
specialty, Mr. J. B. McEIfatrick, was con
sulted next, and he is our choice now. I
made arrangements with him in New York
during my trip Fast the other day. Mr.
McBlfatrick has built in tbe neighborhood
or 50 theaters located in all parts of the
United States. They' are all first-class
honses, and include some of the handsomest
buildings in America.
"Excellent plans have been submitted to
us by Mr. McEIfatrick, and we are now
ready to oush the work through without a
hitch. As I have stated before; no expense
will be spared in the constrnction of the the
ater, and all onr original plans to make the
Dnqnesne second to none in architectural
beauty will be strictly adhered to. The
house will be modeled somewhat after the
Broadway Theater in New York and the
Tremont in Boston, both of which were de
signed by Mr. McEIfatrick.
"There will be 2 balconies and 14 boxes, 7
on each side, with handsome pillars covered
with brass and nickel that will give the in
terior a beautiful effect The new plans
will give tbe stage a depth of 42 feet, and
height 70 feet Novel chairs, fashioned
after, those in thelTew'Tork Metropolitan
Opera House, are now being made for us,
and the house will seat 1,900 people."
W. A. Sheridan, a Chicago attorney,
and brother of the late General Phil Sheri
dan, accompanied Mr. Henderson to attend
to .the legal end of the transactions
connected with the transfer of contracts,
etc. Mr. Sheridan, although well
advanced in years, is a bright, active little
gentleman, with long, wavy hair. His gen
eral manner aud make-up is said to em
brace many features characteristic of his
late brother. He returned to Chicago on.
