Ike Tmel on the Railroads This Summer is Unprecedented. PARTISANS STICK TO THE KOMINEES Since Kemmler's execution the people haven't ceased to discuss the use of elec tricity for killing criminals. Several men were speaking about it Yesterday on a street corner, when one of them made these sen tentious remarks: "The object ot capital punishment I be lieve, is not torture. If ire must get rid of murderers, the idea should be tto put them out of the world with as little pain as possi ble. Sow, a man can form some conception of what be mnst endure when he is to be banged by the neck until he is dead, or to have his bead cnt off with a guillotine or sharp ax, though both are brutal, but who is there who would not dread being struck by an invisible, terrific force like electricity? "We haven't any idea what sensations elec tricity produces in the body. "It fs the thought of being killed by such a power that would be toiture to anybody, and think of a criminal knowing the fact, say for a month or more before the event occurs. Is there any wonder that be dreads and is afraid of everything and every body." A CHANGE OF BASE. The Alton Road looses Mr. Spronll, lea Commercial Ascot. Mr. H. E. Passavant, who resigned as freight and passenger agent of the Union Pacific road in this territory, has accepted the Secretaryship of the Mahoning Valley Iron Manufacturers' Association. He re ceives more salary by tbe change while Youngstown gains an active and good citi zen and Pittsburg loses one. "W. A. Soroull, commercial agent of the Chicago and Alton road, also announced hit resignation yesterday, to take effect Sep tember L He goes to Philadelphia as the freicht agent for the Cambria Iron Com pany. He will be succeeded by W. S. Campbell, the present contracting agent of the line. II r. Sproull is a son-in-law 01 C. H. Chiplev, assistant general freight agent of the Pennsylvania road. Both Passavant and Sproull were accomplished freight agents and good fellows. Tney will be missed by shippers and the fraternity in general. "Within the past three months "Western lines in this city have lost as many repre sentatives. JJr. Taylor, of the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul was the other agent. tnrPEECKDLNUtD TRAVEL. Tbe Rusk of ExcnrIonlai. la All Directions Mill Korp Up. Pittsburg must be a big city, at least there are some people left, though every train that leaves the town is crowded with excursion-' ists bound in all directions. It may not be generally known, but a gentleman who lives in the East End said yesterday that there are whole streets in that section of the city in which the bouses are nailed up and de serted. The occupants are away spending the summer. Last evening the trains on the Pennsyl vania were jammed. There were two and three sections of the express trains, and those coming in were also crowded. The fas: line, due here at midnight, carried ten sleepers, and tbe east-bound train at 3 o'clock this morning had the same number. There were at least 200 people last evening who conldu't secure sleeping berths, and were forced to sit up in tbe coaches. All tbe available cars have been taken to Chirago or Boston to accom modate the Odd Fellows and Grand Army men. The employes around the Union de pot were of the opinion last evening that the regular travel on tbe road was never heavier than it had been for the past two days. THKV TAT.Tf AS THKV KKK' Several Politician Bloke Strong-Claims for Their Respective Candidates. Among the politicians who are members of the Boad Commission and were at the Anderson yesterday were Senators Sloan and Harlan, Bi preservative Shillito, of 2few York, and Charles F. Ettla, who has figured in State politics at various times in the capacity of secretary of some organiza tion or other. Senator Sloan, of Indiana, who is a Democrat, thinks that if there is no change in sentiment before November that Patti son will be elected with a sweeping majority. He s.tys tbe Indiana farmers are for him. Senator Harlan, a Bepublican, claims that Delamater will have a walk-over. Rep resentative Shillito, who is a typical York Democrat, teels sure that Pattison and Black will be elected. He says Black will carry York county without any trouble. Clothing blancbtered.
