ALL GRADES SUFFER SOME DECLINE
Hearr Decline in Calves and Beeves of
Inferior Grades.
BPEIKG LAMBS JOIN THE DOWH MOTE
Office of Pittsburg Dispatch. J
Wedxesday. July 23. 189a (
The receipts of cattle at the East liberty
yards were the largest of the season. There
were 150 car loads on the market Monday,
and about a half dozen loads from surround
ing counties have been received since Mon
day. The contributions lrom Chicago were
not above 30 loads, a rather lifht run from
that source. A number of loads were from
local points in Illinois. There were very
few strictly prime beeves in this week's
offerings, nor werethere toomany tidy butch
er cattle weighing from 1,000 to 1,150 lbs. A
few loads of heavy cattle, a good ways below
prime, were offered. A larce proportion of the
offerings were what a stockman cailed trash,
nr in other words. heaw and licht. coarse
cattle not well rounded out, which are not
"wanted in this market.
Bald hr: "There was a large sprinkling of
coarse, heavy, thinnish cattle, neither fat nor
poor, but bony, and lor this grade there is no
demand in our markets." Markets opened
heavy on Monday at a decline of 10c to SOc per
per cwt from last week's prices.
The greatest decline was on inferior grades,
and least on tidy, light butcher cattle. But all
grades suffered from the heavy influx of low
grade stock. On an ordinary run light, smooth
butcher cattle would have held their own. But
the anxiety to unload forced holders to break
cars and sell tops, ana as a resnlt all grades de
clined in price. The inferior stock pulled down
the choice stock. The highest price paid was
H SO for some prime butcher cattle from Ohio
weighing a little over 1,200 As, which were very
fine in flesh and quality.
Prevailing Frier.
Good butcher cattle from 1,050 to 1,200 pounds
ranged "in price from 3c to 4c per pound.
Heavy coarse beeves ranged from Sc to SJc per
pound. Trashy stock sold as low as 2c to 2Kc
per pound. There were about 30 loads sent on
In first hands, and this morning there was a
large number of odds and ends in the yards un
sold. These must be sold at a great sacrifice or
carried over at heavy expense. There was lit
tle in this week's operations to furnish encour
agement to the drover. According to general
estimate the only question is as to the extent of
losses. Calves are off SI 50 a hundred from
former prices of last week. A load from Chi
cago on Monday broke the market, and it has
not yet recovered. Veal calves were slow at
4c to 5C, and grassers at 2Jc to 3c per
pound.
Good sheep are steady at last week's prices,
while common and medium grades are 15c to
25c a hundred lower. There were very few
good sheep on tbo market this week. Stock
men report that there were very few In the
country. The best prico received this week
was SI 35 for a few bnnches of Washington
county sheep. Spring lambs were in excessive
supply and markets were alow at a drop of 75e
to $1 00 per hundred. The highest price re
ceived was (cand the same grade would have
readily brougnt 7c last week. There were but
two carloads of hogs on the market this morn
ing, and pnees were steady at a range of S3 90
toS4 00-

Some of them buy lots and build cheap but
comfortable dwellings. A great deal ot the
buying and building now going on is by this
class of people. This keeps np the demand for
property and sustains prices, and It Is to supply

city, and others soon will be. It ia not likely
there will be a spurt m anything until they re
turn. The Central School bnildine at Wilkinsbnrg,
on the site of the one destroyed by fire, will
soon be ready for the roof. It will be larger
and more convenient than its predecessor.

So far as tried, flats have proved popular In
this city. All that have been finished are oc

engaged. It talk materializes, two or three
large ones will be erected next year. They are
said to be an 8per cent, investment.

Iocnl Stock Bnjers Still Holding Back for
Cbenp SjnfT.
There was very little demand for home securi
ties at the market prices yesterday. There
were only two sales 10 shares of Electric and
25 of Philadelphia Gas both at a fractional ad
vance over closing prices of the previous day.
Wheeling Gas was a trifle better, and Central
traction somewhat weaker. The remainder of
the list was featureless.
Investors are taking advantage of the dull
ness to hammer the market for cheap stuff.
Tbeirsmall success is proof that things are on
a solid basis, aud that holders are under no
pressure to let go.
The valne of silver certificates is sufficiently
elastic to afford a margin for speculation,
and there is some trading in them in New

THE PITTSBURG DISPATCH,
GOOD 'NEWS.
Absence of New Feature In the Honor
market Not Dlscouraglnc.
The absence of new features in the local bus
iness situation is sufficient evidence that every
thing is going forward as usual, which is really
good news. If anything detrimental to trade
should happen it would be a "new feature."
and the publio would soon hear of it. So long
as there Is nothing new there will be nothing
bad.
These remarks reflect the condition of the
local money market yesterday. There was
nothing new; but, all the same, business was at
a high pitch for midsummer, the demand
tor loans being liberal, with an abundant sup
ply of funds, and checking and depositing of
large proportions. Indicating continued activ

Local Oil Traders Sllll KIllIozTlmo at tho
Old Stnnd.
The oil market yesterday was one of the
slowost of the season. It was dull and narrew
almost beyond expression. But for the de
cision to issue certificates on the Buckeye
product, speculation in this commodity would
soon become a lost art. The opening, highest
and closing was SSJi, and the lowest 88. Tues
day's clearances were 16,000 barrels. Those of
yesterday were less.
Tho lowest point was reached in tho first
hour. Oil City then tossed the price up a
trifle, and held it there, assisted in a passive
sort of way by Pittsburg. The local crowd is.
In fact, on the fence, tbe shorts having no
handle to work, and the longs holding out for
something better, on tbe theory, perhaps, that
the unexpected sometimes happens. Their
perseverance may be rewarded.
The Heine well in the Bellevue field was shot
with 40 quarts of glycerine without avail. The
Shaw well is flowing six barrels an honr. It is
more than probable that W. J. Hammond, the
well-known irnnman, will drill several wells, he
having secured a lease from J, D. Rhelvers.
Ground was broken on Captain Mnlvehill's
place, adjoining Windsor Park, yesterday, for
tbe Jos. S. Brown well. Tbe Patrick well has a
fishing job. TheBnrger well n ill be throuch
tho hundred foot In a few days, as will also the
Harvey A. Jones well.

Wall Street Doll and Featureless Speculat
ing on the Fntnro of the market Change
In tbe Policy of the Treasury
Will Ha vo It Effect.
New York, July 23. The stock market to
day was as dnll as ever for the railroad list, but
was given an appearance of animation by tbo
activity in tho trusts. The firm undertone
which has become so pronounced a character
istic of the market of late was still retained,
but the fluctuations, except in a few special
ties, were on tbe usual limited scale. Tbe
streot is as near dead as possible, but the few
habitues who still are left are inclined to take
an optimistic view of the future, both as re
gards prices and business. Tbe hopes of the
street are now centered on the probability of
the Secretary of the Treasury obtaining suffi
cient offers of bonds to relieve tho situation
aud Insure an easy money market during the
fall, when the demands for the moving of the
crops shall cause the withdrawal of funds from
the New York banks.
,The waiting attitude is taken on all the
questions now open which have a bearing upon
the values of securities, and while the news
from the railroad meetings is, on the whole,
rather favorable. It has no influence further
than to maintain tbe firm tone of the market
against the dullness. The principal attention
was paid again to Sugar Refineries to-day, tbe
talk of the reorganization, which it appears is
now to be undertaken in earnest, helping on
the bull speculation In it, and a material ad
vance, occurred. A feeble responso was made
to this nso by Lead Trust aud some of tbe
specialties, but in no other stock was there an
important movement during the entire session.
Lead was helped by the reports of large earn
ings and tho talk of a dividend, although no
definite information was to be had in the mat
ter. Among the specialties Citizens' Gas, of
Brooklvn, advanced Vt per cent. Hock
ing Valley, Pullman and Denver and
Bio Grande preferred were active
without special movement andhad no influence
upon anything else. It transpired after the
close of Business that the trustees of the Sucar
Trust had to-day begun a suit in Kings county
for the purpose of winding up the Trust and
disposing of the properties composing It. The
strengtb of the stock during tho day was there
fore fullv accounted for. The market in gen
eral continued dull and listless until the close,
which was dull aud steady to firm at about first
prices. Another factor which creates an im
proved good foellug is the fact that it is now
clear that tho crops have been injured only in
Kansas. Sugar is np 3 and Citizens' Gas 1,
but all other changes are slight.
Railroad bonds were fairly active, the trad
ing extending to $1,030,000 distributed over a
large number of issues. The changes in quota
tions, however, were on cbe same limited scale
as usual of iato and only a few bondd show any
important fluctuation.
Government bonds have been more active
and strong. State bonds have been quiet and
firm.
Tbe Post says: The public have reason to ex
pect that there will be a change of policy on tho
part of the Treasury and that there will be
large purchases at an important advance In the
prices of the bonds. One direct effect of this
expectation is that since Saturday the 4 per
cent bonds have advanced 1 per cent to 102 at
noon to-day.
Tbe check-given to speculation In London by
the South American financial troubles can
scarcely last much longer. The Argentine Re
public will within tbe next week or so either
be obliged to suspend specio payments or will
show its ability to maintain them, and in either
case, the London money market will bo re
lieved from its present suspense. These are
tbe aspects of the general situation, which im
part a rising tendency to the stock market in
spite of its dullness. The expectations of a
superabundant supply of money In Julr nave
thus far been disappointed, aud there are some
THURSDAY, JULY "24,
reasons for thinking that the rates for money
will continue on a higher average throughout
this year than last, and in this respect will be a
drawback on any speculation in stocks, though
not necessarily a sufficient obstacle to stop an
advance In prices.
