-v i THE PETTSBTJEG- DISPATCH, .TODNEBDAY, JULY 23,. 1890.. . i -- GAEDEN SASS SCARCE And the Probabilities of Its Being Plentier Don't Appear Good. A SEASONS WHY FRUIT IS DEAR, As Well as Being Poorer in Qnalitj Than for Sereral Years. GREAT KEED OF A BOAKIKQ BAIN If "Sairy Gamp" were alive she would be Jn distress over the outlook. "While she might still have her bottle to put to her lips when "dispoged," her favorite vegetable.the "cowcumber," is like to be very short lrom this time on, and it will be accompanied in this respect by the blackberry, the string bean and, in short, by all kinds of garden stuff. The excessive moisture of two years and the lack of leavening frost last winter had left the surface soil like paste, and now it has bated into the consistency of bricks. This condition is very extensive, latitudi nally and longtitudinally, reaching far be yond Cincinnati, in one direction, and many scores of miles in others, so that should the weather hold dry a week or ten days longer, the result will be not only very disastrous to the agricultusal interest, but to con sumers as well. There is a prospect that home-grown stuff will be dearer than the southern product has been for some months past. NO BAIN IS SIGHT. How soon will it rain? is the question bow asked by the Allegheny county farmers, especially garden farmers. Above, the heavens have been as brass for several days, and the earth below as iron, and Mr. J. "W. Brown, of Neville Island, stated yesterday that he conld not dicner any signs of rain. He also said that the only certain 6ign in dry weather is the Indian one. to see the sky clonded all around the horizon, and rain pour Icc down in the middle. At present, thongh wind blew downstream on Saturday, and there was no dew either on Sunday or Monday morn ings, yet the moon stands on tip-toe, and is far north, and it is very difficult to cet up a steady, soaking 24-hour rain the only kind that will do mncb (rood under such dry weather influences. This fix of the moon is also what makes the nights so cold. It we admit the old adage, "Expcnentia docet stultos" (and Mr. Brown certainly is not x fool), we must allow his opinion to have weight on the subject, for from his youth up until lately ho wa a mariner, and his father be fore him was a manner as far back as the days of leelboatlng on the Ohio, and boatmen are more than amateur meteorologists. A New York authority who has cast his optics over all the field and has gotten advices from all fruit-growing sections, states that the absence of the usual supply of peaches from Maryland. Delaware and the South has en hanced the price of all other fruits. Good f leaches cannot be had at any price. A Mary land (grower reports one peach on 5.000 trees. Where Pittsburg usually gets her main supply she will fail absolutely this year, as Baltimore's necessities will intercept. It is tboucht West ern New York may produce a few thousand baskets for the New York City market, but Connecticut's peach crop will not be 25 per cent, so there is practieally no peach crop this year. THE APPLE CBOP LIGHT. The early apple crop is less than half what it was last year, and the prospect for late varieties is not enchanting. Huckleberries" and blackberries will be short, even shonld the rest of their now brief season be propitious. The raspberry crop has been very poor, and many people will be left in their home can neries, as they refused to pay high prices for atrophied berries, prelerring to wait for some thing else, which will not be here. Pears v. ill make perhaps 25 per cent of a crop, taking the country over, but not 5 per cent here. In New York what aro alleged to be California Bartlett pears are on sale. They are pulled from the trees when about half crown, and are subjected to snlphnr fumes. The process makes them yellow, and thev re semble the Harrietts in everything but taste. In some places there is an abundance of muskmelons and tomatoes, but one nf these places is not the vicinity of Pittsburg, nor is the present outlook favorable to the comfort ing 'conclusion dravi.from a survey of the East, via.: "That the outlook for an abundance of all kinds of vegetables, including potatoes, for the fall months, was never better." Rain within two or three days may work wonders, however, but the average Allegheny county farmer would not learn isdom, though brayed in a mortar. He plotvs only about four inches deep, is afraid to tnrn up the yel low clay. and is very sparing in the use of fertilizer; consequently, bis land will not stand any drouth, to speak of. Some cftbem wouldn't object to allow Uncle Jerry Busk to send up a few of his nitro-glj cerine ballasted balloons, and by firing tbem con dense the moisture so that it would fall. Grapes will probably taste as they never tastea oeiore in we mo oi tms generation. The crop is supposed to be the largest ever crown in this country, and if neither rrowers nor middlemen develop more than ordinary noggishness. one may be able to piece ont the year without getting the scurvy, especially as were wui oe a lair crop oi onions. HORSFORD'S ACID PHOSPHATE Slnkr Delicious Lemonade. A teaspoonf ul added to a glass of hot or cold water, and sweetened to the taste, will be xouna reiresmng ana invigorating. ATLANTIC CITY. WHAT PENNSYLVANIA DUNKARDS Say or Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera nnd Diarrhea Remedy. An Excellent Medicine. We used Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and Diarrhea Bemedv lor dysentery and diarrhea, and will say that it proved, itself to be an ex cellent medicine. Bet. Adam Bakeb, Shady Grove, Franklin county, Pa. A Good Medicine. You can say to your patrons that I have tried Chamber lain's Colic, Cholera and Diarrhea Remedy for diarrhea and colic, and that I would recommend it as a good medioine. Geo. TV. Bbickeb. Eeedeysville, Washington county, Md. Pbompt Belief in Thbee Cases. I was attacked with an acute pain in the stomach and bowels some time last August. I took a small dose of Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and Diarrhea Bemedy, and was eased so much that I was induced to repeat the dose, and was entirely relieved in less than fifteen minutes. I had a similar attack last winter, and at once took a small dose and was promptly relieved. I confess that I never took any medicine that afforded such immediate.relief. It was also used by my son in what he thought to be cramp in the stomach. It also relieved him. Ibelieveit to be an excellent remedy for cramp colic, cholera morbus or any pain in the stomach and bowels. G. B. Bbumbatjgh, James Creek, Huntington county, Pa. Used With the Best Results. As my son was frequently afflicted with diar rhea, I indueed hita to "give Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and Diarrhea Bemedy a trial, and am glad to say with the best re sults. It gave him prompt relief in every instance. I take pleasure in recommending it to others similarly afflicted, and I will use all my influence in making known its mer its. Daniel E. Klein, Bethel, Berks county, Pa. Fbom Somerset, Pa. I have used Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and Diarrhea Bemedy in my family with good results. I also gave some to one of my neighbors, who used it with good results. TJbias D. Bbatjcheb, Somerset, Somerset county, Pa. Cholera Morbus Cured. We have used Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and Di arrhea Bemedy on several occasions. Once on a boy for cholera morbus. It gave relief in 20 minutes. I believe it is a good medicine and should be in every home. Solomon E. Dobeb, Johnstown, Pa. How to Save Doctor Bills. I have used Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and Diar rhea Bemedy in my family several times for summer complaint add it has never failed. I can recommend it as a safe remedy that will save doctor bills and money B. B. BO'WSEB.Bolivar, Westmoreland county,Pa. Diabrhea Cured bt One Dose. My wife had an attack of diarrhea lor several days, when she took a dose of Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and Diarrhea Bemedy, and the result was it stopped immediately. Cyrus S. Bohberger, Lebanon, Pa. A Sevebe attack of Diarrhea Cubed. Last summer during harvest time a man by the name of Mackay(who is himself a medicine agent for a cholera and diarrhea temedy) took a very severe attack oi diar rhea while here. We had no other suitable medicine in the house, so he said he would try Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and Diar rhea Bemedy. After taking one dose, he felt great relief and after 'taking three doses, according to the directions, he was entirely cured and has had no attack since. He says it is the most pleasant medicine to take and did him more good than anything he had ever before tried. We can recommend it as being a very good remedy for diarrhea. Henbv Beelman, Dillsburg, York county, Pa. CRAMP COLIC CUBED, AND PEBHAPS A. Life Saved. A neighbor woman was af flicted with cramp colic My wife thought it would cost her life. She gave the woman Chamberlain's Colic Cholera and Diarrhea Bemedy according to directions and it gave periect satisfaction. I do heartily recom mend it to do all it is recommended to do, and feel thankful for the good it has done. Joseph Bebkey, Hiilsboro, Somerset county, Pa. A Good Opinion. Last fall I was taken with a kind of summer complaint ac companied by a wonderful diarrhea. Soon after my wife's sister, who lives with us, was taken in the same way, We used al most everything without benefit. Then I said let us try Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and Diarrhea Bemedy, which we did, and that cured us right away. I think much of it, as it did forme what it was recommended to- John Hertzler, Bethel, Berks Co., Pa. Fob Pain in the Stomach. We made use of Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and Diarrhea Bemedy on two occasions for pain in the stomach. Besult satisfactory in a very short time after taking the medicine. I hesitate not in giving my opinion in favor of the medicine At least it has done all claimed for it as far as we have tried it. E. D. BOOK, Blain, Perry county, Pa. One of the Best. I have used Cham berlain's Colic, Cholera and Diarrhea Bemedy for diarrhea, colic and cramp in the stomach. I have never used any medi cine with better or more satisfactory results. I consider it one of the best ever used in our family. Jacob Conner, Boyer's Ford, Montgomery county, Pa. It Never Fails My wife is subject to cramp in the stomach. She has tried Cham berlain's Colic, Cholera and Diarrhea Bem edy, and that is her medicine now lor a speedy relief. It never fails. S. S. Beaveb, McAllistervitle, Juniata county, Pa. For sale by E.
