Kemarkable Story of a Boy Who De
tects Teins of Metal or Water.
POWER UTILIZATION ON THE SEA.
What an English Kewspaper Thonght of

GLYCERINE IN STEEL MANUFACTURE
rPREPAEED FOR THE DISPATCH.
The magnetic needle has long been con
sidered a reliable medium for divining the
location of reins containing ironstone or
other similar deposits, and in the course of
some experiments recently conducted by
Profs. Bucker and Thorpe and other emi
nent scientists, some remarkable confirma
tions of and additions to the theories
hitherto held on the subject were achieved.
It was found that on approaching an area
beneath which ironstone was deposited, the
needle became deflected. In cases where the
iron was near to the surface, the deflection
was most acute, and where it was hidden
tar below the surface the degree of deflection
was accordingly diminished, so that by care
fully noting the movements of the needle,
it was possible not only to fix the exact
locality where iron was to be found, but
also, according to the degree of deflection,
to fix with tolerable accuracy the depth at
which the vein would be met with.
Another mode of discovering the location
of minerals is to nse the "diviner," as a
person girted with "magnetic powers" is
called. There is now in England a remark
able boy who is regularly employed lor
this purpose by a mining company in the
north of the country. The manager of the
company in describing this remarkable boy
says:
"Mineral veins and water have very
strong magnetic attraction for the boy, who
is 15 years of age and of ordinary weight
If he stands in a small quantity of water it
takes a very strong man to lift him. It is
not at all necessary tor him to carry a stick.
All he requires to do is to walk over the
ground with his hands clasped and he can
immediately tell you if he steps upon a
vein. He can give the direction of the
Tein, and say whether it is weak or strong.
He can also, simply by walking over it, say
whether another vein crosses it or comes into
it. "VVhen he came here we were all
skeptical, so we took him on a portion of a
hill where we knew veins to exist, but
where no outside traces of them were visible,
and he correctly gave us the direction of
each. .In his researches he came upon a
Tory large and strong vein, which was quite
unknown to us. He gave us its direction
and strength, and as we have since pnt a
shaft down into this vein we have proved
that he was exactly right as to its position.
He does not proless to tell whether the vein
carries lead ore or not; all he can do is to
fiud the vein lor you, and say what size and
strength it is. In the vein he found tor ns
we have not yet come upon lead ore, hut it
carries rich mineral soil and promises well.
"This boy is accompanied by a medical
man, whose services are frequently re
quired as the work of discovery proceeds, in
consequence of repeated magnetic shocks
which he receives from contact with min
erals or water.

Houses in places otherwise unexception
able are oftr. so closely overhung with
trees as to be i a state of humidity by the
prevention of , Te. circulation of air, and
the Tree admission the sun's rays. Trees
growing against; the walls of houses, and
shrubs in confined places near dwellings.are
injurious also, as favoring humidity; at a
proper distance, on the other hand, trees are
favorable to health. On this principle, says
Dr. James Clark, it may be understood how
the inhabitants of one house suffer from
rheumatism, headache, dyspepsia, nervous
o Sections, and other consequences of living
in a confined, humid atmosphere, while
their nearest neighbors, whose houses are
otherwise cituated, enjoy good health; and
- even how one side of a large building fully
exposed to the sun and a tree circulation of
air may be healthy, while the other side
overlooking damp, shaded courts or gar
dens is unhealthy. Humid, confined situa
tions, subject to great alternations of tem
perature between day and night engender
the most dangerous of all the physical qual
ities or the air, and humidity in general is
the most injurious to human lite. Dryness
with a free circulation of air and a full ex
posure of the sun are the material things to
be attended to in choosing a residence.
Rnilrrnys ns Thry Were Been.
A perusal of the English papers of the
year 1835 gives some amusing evidence of
the way in which the advent of the steam
railway was regarded. The John Bull says
in one of its issues of that year: "Does
anybody mean to say that decent people,
passengers who would use their own car
riages, and are accustomed to their own
com orts, would consent to be hurried along
through the air upon a railroad, from which,
if a lazy school boy left a marble, or a
wicked one a stone4 they wonld be pitched
off their perilous track into the valley be
neath; or is it to be imagined that women
who like the fun of being whirled away on
party of pleasure for an hour to see a
sight, would endure the fatigue and misery
and danger, not only to themselves, but to
their children and families, ot being dragged
through the air at the rate of 20 miles an
hour, all theeir lives being at the mercy of
a tin pipe, or a copper boiler, or the acci
dental dropping of a pebble on a line of the
way? Cuibono the railroad?"
Glycerine Treatment of Steel.
It has been found that the Kedemann
Tilford steel process, which consits of treat
ing the metal in a bath into which glycerine
enters largely, causes an increase in ductility
and tensile strength far beyond anv record
in that respect that has yet been established
by either Government or private tests. The
very finest and strongest grade of steel
superior in these properties To any other
sow in use, can be produced by this process,
at only a little more than the cost of the
crude Bessemer arrticle.
Economical Production of Power.
It has been computed as an illustration of
the great cheapening of ocean freights
which has taken place in recent years, that
half a sheet of note paper will develop suf
kcientpower, when burned in connection
with the triple expansion engine, to carry a
ton a mile in an Atlantic steamer.

Permanent Record of tfae Scnm or Bird..
It is proposed that a permanent record be
made of the songs of birds by means of the
phonograph "This done," savs a corre
spondent, "the song could be reproduced
- leisurely and 'scored' by a competent musi
cian. Thus art and nature would go hand
in hand.
