FOEGOTTEN HISTORY
Recalled by a Man Who Has Been a
Wanderer for Sixty-seven Tears.
A ROMANCE OP THE EAST AND WEST
Elchard M. Lanzhnrst Ketnrns to Attcni
Allegheny's Semicentennial.
TflE DESTRUCTION OF SMOKI ISLAND
Seated in Union ilation lout evening was
a line looking man, about 75 years of age,
although bit appearance did not indicate it.
H!i face was browned by the iun, and yet
It had a rosy tinge of health which con
trasted prettily with hi white beard and
hair. Ilia only occupation wai in watching
the people who crowd in and oct of that
railroad center.
"I never dreamed of teeing such a buttle
and to many people," he said to a Dis
patch reporter, whom good fortune had
given a seat beside him. Then followed a
story which was strange ctod to a news
paper man. The name of the old
man was Richard M. Langhurst.
lie left Allegheny county In n
prairie schooner in 1833, and after a romnntio
life in the West, he is returning in time to
be present at the semi-centennial of Alle
gheny City. The story he told was about as
follows:
"When I left here TitUburg and Alle
gheny were but little towns. My home was
in Carlisle. Doth of my parents died there,
and when I was 12 years old I wont West
with a party of emigrants. At Allegheny I
found work with a farmer and stayed there.
In 1333 I started further West
A TITID KECOLLECTION.
"I can remember as well as it it were yes
terday how we went out the old Ohio road.
But the most vivid memory I bare is the dis
traction of old Smoky Island. I suppose tbcre
are few people here who remember anything
about that island. It commenced about a quar
ter of a mile below the point where
the Allegheny and Monongabela rivers join,
and extended up tbo Allegheny river almost
to Federal street. It had even rcnnhpri nn
further than that. It is said, in former years,
ana tbere was a hill at the upper end,
but the flood had washed that part away
long before my time. I can remember
of the tannery that was located on the lower
end. It did a good business until the flood of
February, 1S32. It had liecn an open winter,
but very cold. When the ice broke there was
an immense gorce at the Seven-Mile Island.
The greater part of Pittsburg and Allegheny
were flooded. The day It broke was awful. The
water and ice seemed to tunnel the bank ot
the island, and we could see great sections of it
break, ana then it was washed awav by the
flood. There must have been other gorges
above, for the water kept running heavy for
several days. The big blocks of ice gTOund
together until tbere was a constant roar.
"Piece by piece the island melted away
before our eyes, and when the water fell, only
a little remnant of it was left. The tannery
bad disappeared entirely, and I am told that
subsequent floods have washed away even the
remnants of the Smoky Island.
"You ask why it was named that? Well, I
don't really know, but there was a tradition
that in the early history of the county long
before the building of Fort Pitt it was a
stronghold of the Indians. The bill at the
upper end was used both as a place for hold
ing councils and as a signal station, where the
smoke signals to the Indians on the hillsides
were fired, and it is from that the name was
give."
THE BOMA2TCE OF HIS LIFE.
But beyond this there was a romance In tho
old man's life. The party with whom be went
West settled in the wilds of Indiana. As
pioneers they had to face the Indians. Many
were the troubles they had. In the settlement
where they lived waB James Trimble and his
charming wife, Sarah, and with a bright-eyed
2-ycar-old boy made up a happv household
"One day in the early spring "the Indians sur
prisedms." saiu;.Mr. Lanchum. "Many of the
settlers were put to flight. I got an arrow in
ju.v euumuvr, auu leu jor aeaa. ay llliani
Trimble and his son Here killed
before his wife's eyes. She was
talen a captive, but escaped tho same night.
I had lain 1, don't know how long, when
It was Sarah Trimble who, with tubs and
water, dressed my wounds. For weeks she
nursed me, and. to tell the truth, two Tears
later she took my name as her "own.
Tbo gold excitement of '49 took
ns further West. Our residence
was at the mining camps In California, Nevada,
New Mexico and Utah. Though I did not
strike it rich, I was prosperous, and now have
a stock ranch in Utah, about 40 miles from Salt
Lake Citv. We bad children who are still liv
ing, but last year my partner died, and it
was then I yearned acaln for the East, and
flnallr took the trip. I don't know anvone and
have no relations in Allegheny, but I am plad
to be back hero in time to witness the celebra
tion of Allecbeny City's half century of exist
ence. The only thing that I don't like is that
both Pittsburg and Allegheny are not -one
great metropolis Instead of two separate
cities."
