''Wsr- THE PITTSBURG- DISPATCH, WEDNESDAY, JULY 2, 189a - BEACHED THEIR GOAL Over Four-Fifths of the Scholars Ex amined for the High School STAHD THE TOUGH TEST EEQUIEED. Close Eaca Between Grant and Libertj Schools for First Honors, THEO'HAEA SCHOOL CEOWDIKG THEM Many a youthful hear; in thli city to-day beats lighter than it has for some time; but a number are quite cast down. The result of the examinations for admission to'the High School was announced yesterday afternoon. There were 602 candidates, and of these 418 passed; 26 failed in one study, While making the required average, and will be re-examined in the study in which the deficiency exists; 50 failed entirely; and eight did not complete their papers, on account of sickness. There were more cases of illness this year than is customary, the hot weather being the cause. These candi dates will be given a chance to complete the examination in September before the school opens. The first honor this year goes to the Lib erty School, where Hiss Lida C. Axtell made the remarkable average of 95.8 per cent. The whole Liberty class did well, and as a class made a. strong fight for the best general average. In this they were unsuc cessful; the Liberty average was 85.3 per cent, while the Grant School made 86.8 per cent. This, however, is but slight consola tion to the Grant This districthas held the Highest individual honor and the highest general average so long that to lose the first honor place is an unwelcome surprise. It is somewhat more remarkable on the part of the Liberty School, as Miss Mary Ander son, the assistant principal and teacher of the High School class, has only held the post for one year. The second honor went to the O'Hara school, where Miss Minnie Shillv bad an average of 95.6 per cent, but 3-10 of 1 per cent less than Miss Axtell. The third honor was divided. Miss Bertha Young, of the Lib erty, and Miss Deborah Payne, of the Grant, each making a record of 93.6 per cent. High averages were the rule, 31 pupils making 90 per cent or better. Below will be fonnd the names and aver ages of the successful candidates: ALLEX SUB-DISTRICT. Number in class U; passed, 8; to he re-examined, 1; failed, 2. 1SS. Air ltasser. 66.6 292.
