Soke or the Pittsburg teachers may be found
at nearly all points of tbe continent during va
cation, but for many the magic word "home"
has the most restful prospect. Undoubtedly,
the European party or Pittsburg teachers that
will sail on the steamer Devonia on July S,
holds the preeminence of direction, and it is to
be hoped that the Old Atlantic will
show a proper spirit of behavior
to this distinguished party of lady teachers
who will roam through Europe the next two
months. The party intended sailing next Fri
day, but Superintendent Luckey received a
telegram yesterday morning from New York
informing him that the steamer Devonia will

GENERALART GOSSIP.
The Bavarian Parliament proposes to reduce
the annual appropriation of 100,000 marks for
the purchase of works of art to 60,000 marks.
The Clerical party is particularly hostile.
The Greek Government proposes to raise a
monument in the form of a mausoleum to the
French, Russian and English who fell fighting
for Greece during tbe war of independence.
Fbom the Paris Salon of 1690 the Department
of Fine Arts has purchased for the State,
among other things, the marble statue called
"The Siren," by Denis Puech, and the land
scape byFernand Quignon called "Ihe Har
vest." Salomon Reinacii has edited and published
an archaeological jonrney through Greece and
Asia Minor made in 1812-4 under the direction
of Philippe le Bas. The plates are after designs
by E. Laudron. The book appears in a series
called Bibliotheque des Monuments Figures

A Paris dealer sold a violin this spring to
Hall fc Son, of London, tor $10,000. It i a
Stradivarius called "The Messiah." and was
shown In 1872 at the South Kensington Museum,
when Its estimated value was $3,000. Musical
instruments are beginning to rival pictures as
costly objects to look at, for such pieces are
rarely used.
Acquisitions of the Louvre include a "V ir
gm Mary" by Germain Pllon. a sculptor of the
sixteenth century, which has been in the chapel
at the military school of St. Cyr; a "Calvary"
in oAkwood, containing life-size figures of
Christ, Mary and St. John, bjv an unknown
Flemish sculptor of the early sixteenth cen,
tury, which has been in a church at Nivelles,
and a marble "Virgin Mary." from Ecouen
which has been for half a century at Versailles,
in St. Louis' Church.
The great megallthic underground building
at New Grange, Ireland, shows signs of caving
In. Tbe entrance to this strange building is so
long, low and filthy that very few persons have
ever penetrated it. Mr. George Coffey, of Dub

its actnal apDearance. Those who are anxious
for the preservation of prehistoric monuments
in Ireland demand tbat steps be taken to pro

A Letter Showing the Intensity of Feellosr
Away Back in 1832.
The following letter, which was written
in 1832 by Mr. Andrew Murphy, father of
Mr. N. Grattan Murphy, a highly respected
citizen of Pittsburg, to the Hon. Harmar
Denny, then representing the city at 'Wash
ington, shows the depth of feeling on the
tariff question even at that early day:
Kleecedaxe, July 6, 1832.
How. Habxax Denny:
Dear Sir On my return from tbe East I
was ery much gratified to find at my house
several papers sent to me by your kindness
from Washington relative to the tariff, for
which I return you my sincere thanks. By a
paper I saw yesterday it appoars tbe bill bas
passed the House of Representatives, and is
now before the Senate, where I am in hopes it
will be rejected, if not improved, as in my
omninn as a woolen manufacturer, it would be
better to have no bill than either of those I
have seen. Wo would not know what to de
pend on, and be obliged to torn our attention
and industry to something of more certainty.
I regret to see so many of our State Repre
sentatives deserting tbe manufacturers and
wool gro ers. and indeed the interest of their
constituents generally: the country should feel
grateful to joufor your great nerserverance
and industry manifested throughout in favor of
the protective sj stein. The encouragement
that was held out to tne manufacturers and
wooL growers by the tariff of 182S should not be
abandoned so soon until things get a fair start
for under its influence it was very apparent
the country prosperedhn an unparalleled degree
unknown in the history of any country but
this sudden and unlooked for change, which
must inevitably take place in the woolen busi
ness, will undoubtedly I e attended with ruin
ous consequences to the manufacturer and
those engaged largely in the raising of wool.
New, is it possible tbat our wise Legislators
weuld wish to place tbe mechanics and manu
facturers of this tree Republic, and atpiesent
happy country, on a level with the famiahing
and enslaved f objects of despotic or monarch
ical governments, where thousands are glad to
work for lJc a day, or for anything tbey can
KetT
The idea held out tbat tbe manufacturers
were amassing wealth at tbe expense ot the
country cannot be substantiated by facts, be
cause competition among themselves was, and
al ways will be, a corrective. See the
great difference in one or two 3 ears:
In 1530 tbe manufacturers were doing
a fair business; tbe wool growers
got a fair pries for their wool. Last year. In
the spring, wool was from 50 to 80 cents a pound
and tbo manufacturer was satisfied to purchase
at those- prices, if tbe market was secure to
them, but as soon as the manufacturers got in
their stock ot wool at a high price, then the
country is flooded with British goods and like
wise wool from different parts ot the world.
This lowered tbe price o wool and woolens to
the rnin of thousands. Was there no British
agency or Becret service money emplojed in tbls
business to break tip and destroy the American
manufacturers? It at least looks suspicious, as
it commenced with Englishmen in Philadel
phia. During my visit East I was, of course, thrown
among the manufacturers and friends of tbe
American system generally, and found a great
falling off from General J .ckson. Many that
were bis wannest supporters told me they
would not vote for him again that measures
were preferable to men. Henry Clay appears
to be the choice of tbe manufacturers, and is
said to be tbo only mar. calculated to save tbe
country from inevitable ruin, that is likely to
be brought about by this outrageous attack on
the industry of the country. ith respect, I
remain, yours truly, Aktibew Mdepht.
