The Contributions Passed the $1,000 Mark and Still Comin?. BALLOOXS AKD GROTESQUE FIGURES In addition to the many other attractions secured by Mayor Qourley for the Fourth of July celebration, at Schenley Park, there will be a long list or sports for the edification of those who do not care to be enthused by patriotic and soul-stirring speeches. The Mayor Is of the opinion that irith nothing but red lemonade and Patrick, Henry addreses, sprinkled with the report 'of fire crackers, the celebration -would be rather tame and has arranged to provide other amusements. Yesterday he held a conference with Kathel Kerr, of this city, the champion hammer thrower ot the world, and the latter will arrange the programme. The latter will consist of racing, jumping, wrestling, tug-of-war, etc. There will be oyer 30 events, and they will be open to all comers. Mr. Kerr is a Scotch Canadian and has lately made Pittsburg his home. In Chicago last year, he beat the . world's record for throwing the 12-pound hammer. The dis tance was 129 Ieet, and the throw was made with one hand. He also threw the 56-pound stone 26 feet, and has a first-class record. He competed with Duncan C. Boss and Donald Dinny, winning the world's-championship from the latter. First, second and third prizes will be given the winners in the dit feient contests. It is expected the citizens will donate the prizes. WRESTLED TVITH A CTCLONE. Mr. Kerr, while traveling in the Cale donia games, had a wrestle with a cvclone in Boone, Iowa. While giviug a perform ance a storm struck the grounds and cleaned almost everything from them The people were left standing iu six inches of water on an open field.' The actual cash in the hands of City Treasurer Denniston up to date amounts to $738 0. To this must be added the S100 subscription of George "W. Elkins, a book subscription of Fred Lamke, which will ex ceed $100 from the insurance men, and other book subscriptions, which have al ready on band over a 100, but will not be turned in until the end of the week. B. Eaton 1 TO PLEASE THE CHILDBEX. It has been practically decided that there will be no fireworks display at night at the the park. Instead it is intended to have daylight fireworks to please the children. Fifty large hot-air balloons and a number of Japanese paper figures of grotesque design will be set off during the afternoon and early evening. Mayor Gourley will have a conference to day with General Superintendent Patton of the Baltimore and Ohio road in regard to running trains from the foot of Smithfield street to the park via the Junction Railway. It is probable that people from this city will take this route, as the railroad runs past the place where the festivities will be held. SCHOOL CHT1DEEX TO JUBILATE. The Sim Keep Off" tbe Gran Will be looked Upon With Scorn. The children's jubilee in the Allegheny Parks to-morrow afternoon promises to be successful beyond the fondest expectations of the gentlemen who agitated a renewal of the old and beloved custom. A joint meet ing of the Citizens' Committee and the Board of School Control was held at the High School building last night. The Finance Committee reported collections sufficient for all the necessary expenses that will be incurred. There is 'enough money now in the bands of the committee. It is hoped enough more can be raised to give a number of popular open air concerts. This can almost surely be counted upon as sev eral merchants and residents of the town have expressed themselves as being in favor ot them. The only business forthe committees to do last night was to arrange the bands of music for the several schools. There have been four bands of 24 pieces each engaged and one more will be engaged to-dav. Thev are the Cathedral, Select Knights, Post 162 and the Superior. The five bands will be di vided, and, as there are but ten schools to take part in the jubilee, each school will be escorted to the park from their school building, after which the bands will again join and take up their allotted stations. In the evening it is probable they will all be massed and give a grand concert with 120 instruments. C. Jenks: Please announce that, from continual over work and prostration from heat of the band Sod myself, we were compelled to pass your city and get home, uhlch we did not do too soon. P. B. Gilmoee. PITTSBURG ENTERPRISE Does Avrny Willi Ontslde Competition and Establishes Home Industry. Pittsburtr has made gigantic strides in all branches of trade within the past few years, and nowhere is this more noticeable than in job printing. Only a fevr brief years ago thousands of dollars' worth of work of this kind went to New York and Buffalo. Eysry year have the printing houses in those cities looked upon Pittsburg as one of their most lucrative sources of revenue. But times have changed. Instead of send ing work out. Pittsburg is now prepared to take it in and do it in a manner that even Buffalo, with all her splendid printing plants, cannot surpass. Ben D. Stephens, who is known the country over among the printing fraternity, was in the city a few days ago. He used to come here every few months in the interests of a well-known printing house of Buffalo. He doesn't now. It doesn't pav him. But he was here a few days ago, and during his stay he took a tour through the establish ment of Percy F. Smith, on Virgin alley, near Smithfield street Mr. Smith, he said, was the cause of his loss of trade here, and he was curious to see what sort of a plant he had. In referring to the subject in an interview with a Dispatch reporter published in this paper a couple of davs ago, he says: "I dropped around to Mr. Smith's office this afternoon to sec his plant, and, although I expected to see a model, well-equipped office, I must say I was astonished. He has an outfit that for modern completeness is the equal of any in the country. His press room is the best arranged of any in the city, and among his machines ate three two-revolution Cottrell perfecting jobbers that are the finest in the market. His smaller presses, paper cutting apparatus, etc., are up to the same high standard, while in his composing room are thousands of fonts of type, among which can be found the choice new designs of all the type foundries in the country. His fa cilities for quiet work are something mar velous, and I dare say hecould turn outa forty-eight page pamphlet, ready for the bind er, within forty-eight hours after having beer, handed the copy. His wood type de partment, designed especially for poster and show printing, cannot be'excelled in Buffa lo, and that, you know, has the reputation of being the best poster and show printing city in the country. I tell you he can print any thing from a visiting card to a three-sheet poster as good as any of them." Praise such as this coming from a man ai well up on everything pertaining to print ing is something of which not only Mr. Smith, but all Pittsburg may well be prond. Mr. Smith's plant is indeed a model one, and for proof of the fact that the mod ern conveniences it contains, and the high class of work it turns ont are appreciated by Pittsburgers, is very readily found in the constant clicking of the presses and the rush of business that keeps the army of em ployes as busy as bees from early morning until night. THE WESTERN UNIVERSITY. In Advantages. In the classics, a thorough training in language, literature and civics. The Uni versity library and pnblic libraries of Al legheny and Pittsburg will afford increasing lacilities for research. In science, the well-equipped laboratories eive opportunity for extended study in chemistry and physics, ana especially in electricity and metallurgy. In engineering, it is safe to say that no school iu this county exjoys equal facilities lor illustration of principles taught in the class rooms. The eight or ten bridges of different type within the two cities, and railroads and the mines show the work of the civil engineer. While the engine, loco motive, pump and bridge works, the blast furnaces and rolling mills, the electric and cable cars, tbe arc and incandescent light ing:. plants, with the splendid machinery used in these various industries, lorce upon the student of mechanical engineering not only illustration of theory applied but in spiration as welL Add to these the well equipped chops and engineering laboratory, and we have advantages rarely offered.
