Suggestions for Buildinf; a House for
Comfort and Health.
GOOD ICE CREAM MADE AT HOME.

DEDUCTIONS FEOH A FOETI-DAT PAST
(FBETABEO FOB. THE DISPATCH. J
Some excellent suggestions with regard to
tbe building of a house hare justieen pub
lished. The kitchen and the bathroom are
to hare the first consideration in regard to
convenience and health. The kitchen shonld
be large and high, with ventilator over the
range, stationary tnbs and a nice, large
sink, with waste pipes of sufficient diameter
to carry off all waste water without clog
ging and so necessitating their being dug up
to be cleaned out. A desirable addition to
the kitchen are closets for barrels of flour,
with a door to put the barrel in and a lid
through which the flour can be taken out
when wanted.
The bathroom should be large enough to
admit of a person getting round without
hitting his thins on some piece of furniture.
The dining room should be of sufficient
length for all likely exigencies, but it is
pointed out that it should not be wide
enough to accommodate besides the table, a
aofa and two or three rockers, for the reason
that the dining room ought not to be made
for any other purpose than to eat in. This,
however, is a matter of opinion, for there
are times when the dining room may be
very profitably utiliied for other than its
special purpose. There should be two
Bleeping rooms on the first floor, one of
which could be used as a sewing room when
not used as a bedroom, and would be a great
convenience in case of sickness. The writer
of the article in question says further: "I
would not have a dead room in the house,
or more commonly called parlor (only to be
used on wedding or funeral occasions). I
would pay strict attention to having my
own sleeping room light and pleasant, with
nice clothes room, closet, etc. I would have
the whole house finished off in hard wood,
either oak, chestnut or nsh, polished and
oiled; the dining room floor made of Geor
gia pine, oiled. The front hall should be
carpeted.
Tbe Telephone Id War.
J. J. Carty says that the possibilities of
the telephone will be as great in war as
they have been in times of peace. He telle
how not long ago, the general manager of
the telephone company in Buffalo, assem
bled in less than half" an hour the entire
Board ot Trade of that city to attend a meet
ing on an important subject, and tbe meet
ing could only have been called by the aid
of the telephone. Mr. Carty is of opinion
that this should suggest to our military au
thorities the utility of tbe telephone in the
mobilization of the various State militia or
ganizations. With a telephone in every
block iu every city of the land, it would be
possible to assemble all the State militia of
this country in a lew hours. In Germany
the telephone, like tbe telesraph and rail
roads, is controlled by the Government, and
telephone officials are assigned to a regular
place in the field, to be taken on the com
mencement of hostilities.
Flowers at Railroad StntloDS.
In England the charm of a summer jour
ney on some of the railway lines is much
increased by the prettily kept gardens in
which the stationmasters take great pride.
The idea is such an excellent one, that its
introduction into this country is to be re
garded with satisfaction. At several of our
stations the tendency to mitigate in some
degree the otherwise barren and uninviting
surroundings by the growing of flowers has
begun to assert itself. Some roads have
progressed so far in this direction as to have
established greenhouses on some of their
divisions, for the purpose of supplying
plants suitable for such uses. The green
house of the Buffalo division of the Erie
road, which is located at Attica, has already
furnished this year for that division 8,000
geraniums, .000 colens and 10,000 other
plants.
Kovelty In Printing Presses.
A novelty in printing has been introduced
into Germany by which it is said that two
colors can be done at one impression. In
addition to the usual appliance for printing
in black, that part of the form which is in
tended to be printed in another color is set
up from types, rules, ornaments or cuts
made of a porous material, such as pumice,
Spanish reed, or, best ot all, walnut root
The type or cut thus made is inclosed in a
holder, in which is a thin, oily ink which it
absorbs by capillary attraction, thus always
presenting an inked surlace ready lor the
impression. The upper rim of the holder
has a rim, or metal border, slightly raised
above tbe wood type, so that the ink roller
passes over the latter without any union of
inks. One revolution ot tbe cylinder thus
effects an impression in two colors.
A New Typewriter Ribbon.
A new process has been discovered for
making typewriter ribbons, which, it is
claimed, will revolutionize the manufacture
and sale of this class of goods. Typewriter
riboons, as made now, have only one sel
vage, being cut from an ordinary piece of
cloth, and both edges treated with a prepar
ation which makes the fibers of the cloth ad
here together, thus preventing the raw
edges from ravelling. It is claimed that
ribbons made in this way bag in the center,
clog the type and do not wear evenly. The
new ribbon will have a selvage at both
edges.
Metal In Bookbinding.
Hetal has for some time been very advan
tageously used in the binding of books as a
substitute for cardboard. A special prepara
tion is first necessary, and the leather may be
bent and'straightened again without percep
tible damage, a course of treatment that
would destroy cardboard covers. The metal
is covered with any material that taste may
dictate, and the finished book shows no
difference in appearance, excepting in great
er thinness of the cover, which is always de
sirable.
Tbe Moral of Fasting.
Signor Sncci has recently shown in En
gland that a forty days fast is possible to
more than one individual. Tbe lesson to
be taught from his feat, says the Medical
Record, "Is one that has olten been taught
be. ore, and it is that people eat too much,
and, iu this country, at least, drink too
little. More diseases come from excessive
and intemperate feeding than from alcohol,
for wrong feeding is the basis of gouty,
rheumatic, diabetic and obese diatheses, as
well as of an infinite number of gastroin
testinal ills."
New Transparent Film.
A new transparent film for the use of pho
tographers, which, it is claimed, will prove
superior to any now in use, is shortly to be
placed on the market. It is made by chemi
cal rather than by mechanical means, and
the inventor is a Bostoniau. Pnotography
is to be taught in most of the best schools in
Japan, notably in the archaeological, the
forestry and the military institutes.
Safety Fnslener for Envelopes.
A novel construction of a safety fastener
for envelopes is tbe subject of a patent
taken out by an English inventor. His ob
ject i to reader envelopes secure against
their flaps being tampered with or the con-
feuu vciu$ cAuwicu wiiuuuh ue&troring tne i
envelope itself. 1

REAL ESTATE.
--
Of all classes of investment, those
in real estate shonld be the most
carefully considered, and the .rea
son is plain. Based upon solid
values, such investment is the surest
and the safest that can be made.
On the other hand, nothing depre
ciates in value with such startling
rapidity or is harder to dispose of
at any price than real estate, which,
at the time of its purchase, has for
for its sole recommendation a
"lovely situation" or a "perfect
climate." Neither is it wise in this
particular to follow the crowd, for
by artful advertisements and ficti
tious sales it is an easy thing to in
augurate a "boom" that promises
fortune to all, but almost invariably
results in disaster.
The experience of persons who
have thus hastily and inconsiderate
ly bought property for no better
reasons than those enumerated and
afterwards repented at leisure an
experience so oft repeated all over
the world in a greater or less de
gree should teach men that only
in the natural centers of population,
where ample opportunities for em
ployment are provided,can the peo
ple at large safely afford to invest
in real estate. The most correct
standard of judgment, therefore, as
to the value of property is furnished
by the truthful answer to the ques
tion: "How large a population can
be supported by the well established
industries of the district in which
the property is located ? "
Applying this test to the proper
ties offered for sale by the East
Pittsburg Improvement Company in
the Turtle Creek Valley, below
Walls Station, and confining its ap
plication to a district not exceeding
the property of the company more
than one mile in extent, tbe signifi
cance of the answer is apparent.
At Walls Station the Pennsylvania
Railroad Company is erecting re
pair shops, round houses, etc., that
will directly and indirectly give em
ployment to about 1,000 men.
At Wilmerding, the mammoth
plant of the Westinghouse Airbrake
Company is already in partial oper
ation; when fully equipped it will
employ 2,000 men, most of whom
are skilled mechanics.
At Brinton, the Standard Under
ground Cable Company have con
tracted for the erection of their
new cable works and wire mill,
which, when completed, will give
employment to over 400 men.
At Bessemer, the great steel rail
mill and iron furnaces of Carnegie
Bros. & Co. now employ fully 3,000
men.
The total number of men em
ployed in the district above de
scribed will reach 6,400, and esti
mating that, on an average, five per
sons are sustained by the labor of
each adult err ployed in a manu-.
facturing establishment,, the popu
lation that could easily be support
ed by the industries named, not to
mention many others, that will prob
ably locate in the Turtle Creek
Valley in the near future, would
reach the surprising sum of 32,000.
The figures show conclusively the
solid foundation upon which is
based the value of property in the
Turtle Creek Valley.
Lots of all sizes can be pur
chased at reasonable rates on easy
terms by application to the
