    qjgfflKG THE SURVEY
The r Canal Commission Decides to
Enn the fionte to Pittsbnrg.
EKGIHEERS BEAUING THE OHIO.
Colonel Eofccrts on Its feasibility and the
Water Snppij.
JOKE IDEA OF. THE COST OF BUILDIKG
The Pennsylvania Canal Commission met
in the rooms of the Engineers' Society yester
day. It was the regular monthly gathering.
Engineer Goodwin, who has charge of the
survey, was present and made a report of
the progress. It was expected that the sur
vey from Erie to the Ohio river at Bochester
wonld be completed by the time the meeting
was held, but ten miies yet remain to be
gone over. This work will be finished in a
lew days.
The commission decided to continue the
survey up along the Ohio river to the Da
vis Island dam. Colonel Boberts will
recommend that the canal be bnilt to the
dam. He says the proposed dam at Beaver
only provides for a six-foot stage of water,
and the draught of the canal will probably
be not less than nine feet. As soon as the
survey to the city is completed, a map of
tne canal and me region win oe prepares.
It will require a lew months Iouger to com
plete this job, and the commission will re
port to the Legislature next winter.
A PRACTICAL SCHEME.
"What Bhall be the size of the canal is
the next question to settle," said Colonel
Boberts yesterday. "It we knew how large
it would'be then I could give an estimate as
to the cost. As it is now, I have my own
ideas, but I don't care to make any blunders.
Tbe original idea was to build a canal large
enough to float a 1,500-ton vessel. I shouldn't
like to see it so small that a bargo with 1.100
tons on board could not be carried. Of tbe
feasibility of tbe canal the commission has
been convinced lone ago. If we thought it was
impracticable in tne beginning, the surveys
would never have been made.
"The people who claim that tbe water supply
on the summit is not sufficient, should prove
their statements. I have repeatedly said there
is a sufficiency of water to run the canal: in
lact, the supply will be larger than the slack
water in the Monongahela river. I stand over
this statement, and 1 have the reports of other
engineers to confirm me, so that the men who
decry the water supply should demonstrate the
truth or their assertions. The summit of the
canal is a great swamp, and it can be easily
dredged.
SEVERAL TTATEB ROUTES.
"Besides, the canal will run through a cum
ber of water routes that have already been
made, and this will greatly lessrn tbe cost of
construction. With the improved machinery
of these days for dredging.the work will not be
as difficult as some people imagine. I can say
this, that, in looking over the ground, that all
the masonry will be such that it can be done at
the recular rates."
Secretary Brewer, of Erie, is also more
enthusiastic than ever for tbe
canal. He doesn't claim to know
anything about tbe practical workings
of the scheme, but be is convinced that tbe
canal is feasible. He also insists that it will
be a cheap waterway to build. He thoucht if
the Beaver dam was ever built that it might
lurnish enough water between Pittsburg and
that point to float the canal craft, and it
wouldn't be necessary to run it to Davis Island
dam.
Engineer Goodwin was also at the meeting.
He left in the at ternoon to go to Rochester,
where he expected to meet his men. After go
ing over the ground he told Secretary Breuer
that there never was a canal built ot any con
sequence in which the cost of construction will
be as low as in the Pennsylvania canal between
Pittsburg and Erie.
A Trnveiinc Man's Experience,
P. S. "Verbeck, who represents the type
foundry ol Messrs. Earnhardt Eros & Spin
dler, Chicago, says: "On my return home
from a trip I found our little girl sick with
summer complaint. I went to a drug store
and procured a bottle of Chamberlain's
Colic, Cholera and Diarrhcaa Beniedy. We
gave her a lew doses according to directions.
She recovered in a short time and we were
well pleased with the medicine."
