J0 THE PITTSBURG DISPATCH, ' WEDNESDAY, JUNE -- U, , 189a' -3rD ' 'SOYLE AND HIS DIKE 'Figure Extensively in the Inquest Begun Yesterday Over THE MURDER AT CASTLE SHANNON. Evidence That the Deceased and His Slayer Were Old Enemies. A WOKAH WHO WAS SHOT BI ACCIDEXT The inquiry into the tilling of Peter Soyle by I'rank O. Morrison, at the Castle Shannon picnic Monday evening, was con ducted yesterday alternoon by Coroner Mc- . DowelL Many colored people and quite a number of police officers were present. Patrick Malone, a colored man living on Brady street, Soho, said that Soyle came from Philadelphia and had been working ' for the Panhandle at Bovrerstown. They went to the picnic together, bnt Malone was sot present when Soyle was killed in the blacksmith shop. Afterward he heard somebody say that Soyle had a knife. Maria Jackson testified that on Monday moraine Soyle went to her house in Clark's court, off Seventh avenue, and borrowed 25 cents. He told her that h(s wife was living in Harrisburg. At the picnic Miss Jack son saw Soyle quarreling with Morrison and heard Soyle say, "One of ns has got to die." Morrison replied. "I don't want to fight yon." Morrison ran away and Soyle followed. Miss Jackson said that she saw a knife in Soyle's hand, and at that she ran, frightened, in another direction. Dr. Samuel McGogney examined Sovle soon after his death, in William AVrihland's shop, and afterward assisted Dr. Guy Mc Candless in making an autopsy. Dr. Mc- Candless testified that Soyle's death was caused by a blow and a nervous shock. QUARRELED OTER A KEG. X. E. Girst, a colored man living on Penn avenue, said that at the picnic he and four others made a pool and sent Morrison for a keg of beer. 'When the keg came, Girst, "Washington "Walls, Albert Davis and Morrison took it to the blacksmith shop to drink it Soyle and several others followed. Morrison told tlieni not to come, bnt tbey did. At the shop the blacksmith, William Wrih land, handed Soyle a class of beer. Soyle said something that angered the black smith, and they got to jangling. Morrison , then told Soyle to leave, and the quarrel besan. Soyle put his hand Dace as if to draw a weapon, and the witness caueht hold of Morrison and tried to stop the row. Morrison said, "Let me go. Cheek. Don't yon see that man's pot a Ernie?"' Wit ness let co, and saw the blade of the knife in Soyle's hand. Morrison then picked np a ham mer and threw it at fcojle. Just as he did so the witness caucbt Morrison and threw him ont of the door. Girst did not see the hammer strike Soyle. Soyle did not hit Morrison, but luaae at him as it to do so. After throwing Morrison ont of the shop, the witness and Mor rison started down tha road. They returned in a few minutes and tne witness saw Soyle lying by the anvil dead. The Coroner said, "You acted very badly to my man last night, Ed. Uirst." DIDN'T ENOW IT. Well, Judge." the witness replied, "I had Uqnor in my head and didn't know I bit him." Xhe Coroner then gave-Girst a severe lecture on resisting officers. William Gibson said he was drinking beer in the shop at the time and was so interested that he did not know anything about the fight, which was very short It started when he be gan to drink a glass of beer and was over be- lore lie nau emptied tne class. The Coroner ordered Gibson to be held under bail. Mrs. Annie Mosny, of No. 52 Wilson street, testified that tbe dead man was 28 years old, and that his true name was Samuel Sawyer. Soyle's Knife was shown. It is a dirk with a blade five Inches long. Other witnesses cor roborated Malone and Girst. Jennie Holman. of Jones' avenue, was called, but all she knew was that she had been shot in the knee by John Allen. She said that the shooting was acci dental. Allen was held for an information. The inquest was adjourned until 10 o'clock this forenoon. Malone and Girst were held as witnesses, each under 500 ball. The Best Remedy for Cholera Morbus. From tne Des Moines Leader. Some weeks ago a Leader man went into a drug store and asked: "What is the best remedy for cholera morbus?" He was told, "Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and Diar rhoea Keraedy." The medicine was pur chased, and worked like a charm. It proved to be very effective, and since we found by experience in our owu household that this particular remedy was of real value, we have not hesitated to speak ot its merits as occasion offered. Of all classes of investment, those in real estate should be the most carefully considered, and the rea son is plain. Based upon solid values, such investment is the surest and the safest that can be made. On the other hand, nothing depre ciates in value with such startling rapidity or is harder to dispose of at any price than real estate, which, at the time of its purchase, has for for its sole recommendation a "lovely situation" or a "perfect climate." Neither is it wise in this particular to follow the crowd, for by artful advertisements and ficti tious sales it is an easy thing to in augurate a "boom" that promises fortune to all, but almost invariably results in disaster. The experience of persons who have thus hastily and inconsiderate ly bought property for no better reasons than those enumerated and afterwards repented at leisure an experience so oft repeated all over the world in a greater or less de gree should teach men that only in the natural centers of population, where ample opportunities for em ployment are provided, can the peo ple at large safely afford to invest in real estate. The most correct standard of judgment, therefore, as to the value of property is furnished by the truthful answer to the ques tion: "How large a population can be supported by the well established industries of the district in which the property is located ? " Applying this test to the proper ties offered for sale by the East Pittsburg Improvement Company in the Turtle Creek Valiev. below Walls Station, and confining its ap plication to a district not exceeding the property of the company more than one mile in extent, the signifi cance of the answer is apparent. At "Walls Station the Pennsylvania Railroad Company is erecting re- , pair shops, round houses, etc., that will directly and indirectly give em ployment to about 1,000 men. At Wilmerding, the mammoth plant of the Westinghouse Airbrake Company is already in partial oper ation; when fully equipped it will employ 2,000 men, most of whom are skilled mechanics. At Brinton, the Standard Under ground Cable Company have con tracted for the erection of their new cable works and wire mill, which, when completed, will give employment to over 400 men. At Bessemer, the great steel rail mill and iron furnaces of Carnegie Bros. & Co. now employ fully 3,000 men. The total number of men em ployed in the district above de scribed will reach 6,400, and esti mating that, on an average, five per sons are sustained by the labor of each adult errployed in a manu facturing establishment, the popu lation that could easily be support ed by the industries named, not to mention many others, that will prob- ably locate in the Turtle Creek Valley in the near future, would reach the surprising sum of 32,000. The figures show conclusively the solid foundation upon which is based the value of property in the Turtle Creek Valley.
