; A Kew Device of the Rehring Sea
Seal Pirates.
KEED OF BOATS IN THE AECTIC.
Chartering a Fast Steamer to Take Their
Stolen SLins.
ODE BOATS DISTAhCED BI SCHOOKERS
Victoria, June 7. It is jnit le&rned
here that the seal pirates in Behring Sea
, have adopted a new device for circumvent
, inc revenue officers, which is even now
E- being pat in successral operation and which
can be carried on throughout the summer,
unless the Government sends to the Arctic
swifter revenue cutters than the Bear and
the Bush. The plan of the
leal pirates is this: They have estab
lished a rendezvous at Sand Point, about
midway of the Aleutian group of islands.
' The schooners, when they have collected
100 sealskins, put in there, leave their cargo
snd then resume hunting. Thus, if they
are overhauled by the American cutters,
they will have so few skins on board that
thev can be thrown overboard or concealed
and all evidence of seal poachings re
moved.
SWIFT STEAMER CHARTERED.
A swift steamer has been chartered to
cruise about Sand Point and take the skins
as the schooners come in. This vessel is so
fast that it can easily leave behind any Gov
ernment steamer now in commission. This
steamer will make trips to Victoria and un
load skins when she gets a cargo and then
return. This work, it is said, has already
been in operation one week, as the date
fixed by the poachers to begin operations
was Jane 1.
OUR BOATS IIT OTHER WATERS.
They expect to make a larger clean-up
than last year, and it is difficult to see bow
our Government can make any seizures un
less they send the cruiser Charleston or some
other swift new vessel to do patrol duty.
The Bear is now in the Arctic, and the Bush
sailed on Thursday for Behring Sea. Both
are slow for steamers and hare been dis
tanced by fleet schooners, so that there is no
chance "of their overhauling a speedy
steamer. Besides the damage to legitimate
sealing it is estimated that two ont of every
ten seals shot by the poachers escape and
die, while of the skins that they take A large
percentage are defective."
Working the Etna haloon Keepers.
A gentleman frdm Etna called on Mr.
ilcGunnegle, Clerk of Courts, yesterday
afternoon, and informed him that a man,
representing himself as a court officer, was
attempting to earn money by blackmailing
the saloon keepers at Etna, by telling them
that he wonld inform on them for selling
beer by the bucket. Mr. McGunnegle said
the matter would be investigated.

A Family Sqanbble That Developed Threat
to Kill Why m Bradford Man Thought
Hit Wife Oneht to Die They Sow Life
Apart.
Some interesting fragments of private
family history were brought into the light
yesterday afternoon in Alderman Monas
ters' office, in the hearing of Louis Johnson,
who was charged by his wife with surety of
the peace. The husband and wife looked
abashed and defiant by turns, as some un
expected language dropped from the lips of
the other and the attorneys.
Mrs. Johnson alleged that she was met on
Fifth avenue on last Wednesday evening
by her husband, who, she says, declared his
intention of killing her. The couple have
been living separate for some weeks, having
made an agreement to dwell apart in that
harmeny which was a stranger to them
while living under the same roof. Johnson
agreed to steer clear of all places where his
wife might be, and as his wife did not
think his wrangle with her on the street was
in conformity with the contract between
them, she bronght the snit to have him held
under bail to not molest her.
The parties are from Bradford, but Mrs.
Johnson, since her separation from her late
lord, has been liring in this city. Her ver
sion of the threatened shooting was cor
roborated to the letter by a Mrs. Costello,
also of Bradford, who strods to and from the
witness' chair with an Amazonian air that
was the cause of admiration from the lookers-on
at the hearing.
Neither of tne women disclosed anything
of a nature foreign to the case, but when the
husband took the stand in his own behalf,
considerable of a shadow by innuendo was
thrown upon his wife's conduct. He stated
that the only serious difference between him
self and wife was but a weeks ago, after 19
years of wedded life, when they agreed to
disagree. He testified that what he did say
to his wife was "a woman with a son like
yours, who does as you are doing, onght to
be killed." He was then held under bail
for court
Mr. and Mrs. Johnson are well known in
the Bradford region, the former being
largely interested in oil transactions.

Never in the remarkable his

The Wllklmbarc FoaloOlce to Be Trans
ferred to New Quarters.
The Wilkinsburg postofficeis to be moved
after all. The change of location was con
templated some time ago, bnt a great deal
of opposition was developed, especially

were sent to "Washington.
Postmaster James D. Carothers yesterday
received orders from the department at

in the Balston block, on Wood street, it
being rather larger than its present office.
Farmers and others who will have to turn
off Penn avenue to get their mail grumble
a good deal, bat Wilkinsburg residents are
satisfied.

100 per cent better than I did several months
ago, and now my work is 'a pleasure tome,
where it used to be otherwise. My life as a
brakeman brought with it that bane to all rail
roaders, catarrh. I bad it for several years be

aching pain over my eyes, roarine In the ears,
and was continually hawking up mucus which
dropped down into my throat. My stomacn

my dally work a Task. X was clad when the
last run was over. Now all is chanced. I never
felt better in my life and haven't an ache or

Mr. M. McLean.
Mr. M. McLean, a well-known gentleman of

cough was so severe tbat he would spit up
blood. After receiving a course of treatment
from the Catarrh specialists at 823 Penn
