Set York, June 5. The Iron Age in its
issue of to-day sires the following: The hap
penings of the past few months hare empha
sized more strikingly than ever before how
the leadership in the markets which the
East one possessed, has been resigned to the
leading cities west of the Allegheny Mount
ains. Every important impulse has come
from Pittsburg Cincinnati or Chicaeo In the
lines In which they are respectively the leading
markets. It is useless to disculse tlio fact that
the East has finally and completely lost Us
supremacy.
.American Pig The New York market is very
quiet. Transactions, with few exceptions, are
on a moderate scale with prices practically un
changed. The buoyant reports from other cen
ters are reflected by a more hopeful feeling.
which lias not, however, f onnd expression in a
larger volume oi outness or nigner nsures.
The action of the '1 nomas Iron Ccmnanv in
mafkmg the price of No. 1 foundry down tc IS
is without any signincance whatever, the mar
ket havinc been at that figure for a lone time.
It merely means that ihose who arc under con
tract will have their iron billed at
a lower figure. Some of the
Southern furnaces have practically withdrawn
from this marker. The Eastern Malleable iron
works are in the market now for about 13.000
tons of charcoal iron and about 6.000 tons of
charcoal iron are included in the tenders just
issued by the Grand Trunk Railroad. An
equal quantity of other grades of pig iron is
required, but will probably be taken by
English makers. We quote Northern No. 1
foundry. S18 001S 50: No. 2, 817 0J17 50:
Southern Si 1, S16 7517 25, and No. 2. 816 00

Spiegeleisen and Ferro-maneanese The
only transaction of any magnitude closed dur
ing the week was the sale of a 2.000-ton lot of
2U per cent spiegeleisen. special brand, for
1 uture dehverv to a Pittsbnnr rail mill at pri
vate terms. We quote $31 5032 for tidewater
delivery. There have been some sales of ferrj,
prices ranging between 87678 for future de
livery. The order of 600 tons for a Pittsburg
mill was taken by the producer in that locality
at private terms, but reported to be equal to
the current selling price of foreign at tide
water. Billets The movement has been light In the
East, the few sellers awaitinir developments in
the West For a block of 5,000 tons 830 at mill,
was refused. In slabs extended inquiry by a
nail mill for a round lot for delivery during the
second half of this year brought out only one
offer of 831 25 at seller's mill.
Wire Rods Reports are conflicting, but it is
apparent that witu those who take a very hope
ful view the wish Is father to the thought.
Sales have been on a larger scale. Eastern
mills takincln the agsregaie about 25,000 to
30,000 tons, the bulk therefore for Southern
roads. The total includes one large block
which was reported closed months since, but
lias apparently been finally arranged for now.
Among the sales is one in territory
usi ally considered tributary to Pitts
burg. Some of the Eastern mills are
eager to Becnre orders, and, taking it as a
whole, excepting possibly the two Pittsburg
works, the mills are competing sharply for what
orders come into the market. East. South or
West. Occasionally one or the other, havinc
put tue oraer dook into oetter shape by very
active competition, quotes higher prices, but
others seem ready to step in to bid for their
share at close figures. During the current year
there has been some selling, with a guarantee
to the purchaser against a decline, the price be
inp that current at the time of the delivery of
the monthly proportion of the cut rate. We
quote: 830 5031 50 at Eastern mil).
Structural Material Quite a number of large
buildincs are coming into the market, among
them a brewery and a l.irce hotel We quote:
2.1520e for plates; 2.152.25c for ancles; 2.5
2.6c tor tees, and 3.1c for beams and channels.
Fastenings We quoted Spikes. 822 10: angle
bars, 1.73QLS0C. and bolts and nuts, 2.tS03c,
Old Rails There is a widespread inquiry and
with the simultaneous appearance oi a con
siderable number of buyers East and West the
maricet has stiffened. Sales aggregate about
1.600 tons here, and at least one order for a lot
of 1,000 tons of foreign rails for shipment has
gone abroad. As much as 821 and even 821 50
has been offered for rails in quantity up to
5,000 tons. The supply of flange rails in this
market is estimated at 3,500 tons, while the
Ftock of dooble heads is a little over 4,000 tons,
all held in strong hands.

rSPr.CIAI. TELEGRAM TO TUB UISPATCn.'
New York, June 5, The Iron Age In its
Issue to-day printed the following cablegram
from London: The market for pig iron is with
out new feature of any description, and specu
lation is unimportant. Cleveland shipments
are a shade better, but warrants have gone still
lower, selling down to 39 loKs Tuesday, and at
the samo, figures to-day. Scotch shipping
brands arc still receding, and warrants are
weak, with business at 43 9s yesterday
and 43 103 to-day. Hematite warrants bave
dropped with the rest and were down
this week to 51 3s, but reacted to 52 6s to-day.
Steel ship plates are off to 6 17s 6d at Bar
row. Rails, blooms and slabs are about 5s
lower, and quotations on billets and wire rods
are reduced 2 6s, with business moderate in all
departments. Tin sold up to 95 7s 6d spot,
tinder the influence of American demand, and
a large business was done on the raise. On a
cessation of demand prices afterward relapsed
to the previous level. Owing to small direct
shipments it is bel.eved that the American
market is chiefly dependent upon London to
supplying its want.
In copper there is a fair business doing at
about 54 10s for merchant bars. The position
fully warrants the inference that consumption
is outpacing the pro tuction, and higher prices
arc therefore considered as very probable.
French stocks have been further largely re
duced. Furnace material has continued active,
and prices show a farther advance, with Ana
conda matte up to 11 6s on actual sale. Large
quantities have been sold for delivery during
the balance of this year and into the first half
ollS9L All the Anaconda matte lying in Liv
erpool has been purchased for American ac
count. The amount of stock involved in these
transactions cannot be learned. Other sales
include 300 tons Anaconda matte at 11 3s: 200
tons ditto at 11 6s, and 800 tons Anaconda ar
gentiferous on private terms.
For tin plates, inquiries are still numerous
and fairly large business is doing. Buyers for
large parcels arc making offers Some ac
cepted but price not stated. The syndicate of
London and American capitalists, which ac
quired the Forest fc Worcester works, at Swan
sea, is beinz transferred to a limited liability
company. The capital necessary is about 400,
000. Efforts are being made to retain Sir. Will
lams as managing director at a salary of 5,000
per j ear.

Scotch Pigs Warrants have gone lower, sell

A Feeling; That the Coke Trade Has Been
Aroused A Heavy Increase In Ship
ments In the Month of Slay New Ovens
Proposed.
1EFECIAT, TKLEORAX TO THB DISPATCH.'.
SCOTTDA.I.E, June 5. It is now thought that
the coke trade has been fairly aroused from
the lethargic condition which characterized It
during the greater part of last month. There
has been an increase in orders productive, of a
corresponding increase in shipments and more
evidence of an upward movement in trade.
The restriction policy was used to the same ex
tent last week as in preceding weeks. The ad
vance in shipments to points West is a notable
feature. Thev have been increasing almost
every week. There have been no change in the
prices of coke, and there is not tho least evi
dence that there will be the slightest altera
tions. ...... .
No complaints have been heard from any or
the consumers as to prices and they are acting
wisely. There is no disturbing element to trade
at present, bntlaborofflicialaare endeavoring to
work up a strike at Ralney's works. So far their
efforts have Deen rather unsuccessful. In re
viewing the trade for the month of May, it is
found that while shipments will In noway
favorably compare with the previous month's
record.yet over 540,000 tons was disposed of. The
transportation facilities were splendid for the
month, but the lack of orders played havoc.
Commenting on last month's ontput an opera
tor said to-day: "You say that over 540 000 tons
of coke were assigned to various points last
month. Well, tbat is a fair month's work, and
I believe it will be far better this month. It
will at least if It retains its present pace
throughout."

on the new Davidson ovens.

cars, against 1,024 cars of the week before.
The following is the distribution: To points
west of Pittsburg, 3.625 cars: to Pittsburg and
river points. 1,500 cars; to points east or Pitis

Outlook for Wholesale Clothing; Trade Was
Nevr Better.
One of our leading wholesale dealers in cloth
ing said yesterday: "Our trade this spring has
been fully up to last sprlng, wben we had an ex
tra trade. As to prices, cheap goods are cheap
er than ever, but rood goods hold up well to
prices of last season. The demand for bih
grade ready-made clothing is increasing here
every year. The general prosperity of Pittsburg
and the region of which it is the trade center
is having the effect of knocking out shoddy
goods. Workingmen are making good waees
aud are demanding better styles and quality of
clothing every year.
"The class of goods we could sell readily a
few years ago is no longer wanted here. The
bulk of our spring and summer trade is now
over, and we are laying in heavily for fall in
the faith of an extra business for the rest of
the j ear. Our stock of summer goods is unusu
ally well cleaned up, and in some lines we bave
not been able to fill orders of late. We are now
cutting no stuff for fall and winter trade, and
already see signs of great activity when the
watering-place business is over."

The conference of the Pittsburg, Youngs
town and Buffalo freight committees to con
sider the question of advancing the lake
differentials will be held at Niagara to-day.
A number of the local agents left last even
ing. The clim of the all-rail lines that the
difference in rates between the rail and lake
should be 10 per cent was knocked in the
head by Chairman Blanchard, who said that
the Central Traffic Association decided that
the difference should not be less than 10 per
cent, leaving the roads to make it as much
greater as they pleased, which they did.
If the lake differentials to the Northwest
from this territory are advanced, and the
seaboard rates remain Uie same, then it will
be another case of discrimination against
Pittsburg. For once some of the roads say
it is not fair to rub it into this city. The
Pennsylvania Company has lines both by
rail and water to the Northwest, but their
agents favor maintaining present rates. The
all rail routes claim that this company ought
to be neutral; that in either case it would
not lose anything.

THE NEWS AND GOSSIP OP THE TOWN
It leaked ont yesterday that Mr. J. M.
Schomaker has purchased, through Messrs.
Black & Baird, a business property near
the new postofHce, for (43,000. The exact
location ami size of the lot could not be as
certained. It was stated yesterday by a gentleman
who bas close relations with the buyer, but
whose name he refused for publication, that
the residence property of young Dr. Old
shue, onoTifth avenue. Bellfield, has just
changed hands for $14,000. The lot is 60 by
160. with a house of nine rooms thereon. Dr.
Oldshue paid 89,500 for It two years aco.

was that of a lot, 800x120, on Collins avenue,

ness man for 812,000, being at the rate of 840 a

proved, but it will soon be opened from
Hoeveler street to Bond.
Several other deals, ranging from 815,000 to
850,000, were mentioned, but particulars were
withheld. Avery important transaction, in
volving a fine business property, is hanging fire

and buyer.
Northitde Railway Consolidation.
The long-talked-of consolidation of the Pitts
burg. Allegheny and Manchester and the Pleas
ant Valley street railway systems seems to be
more of a reality than many people think. An
officer of one of these companies in conversa
tion on the subject yesterday remarked: "I
think consolidation will be the outcome of the
agitation not because the companies bave any
particular lore for oach other, but as a matter
of mutual interest. It would, by practically
monopolizing Northsido territory, go far to shut
out competition. The companies would' do as
much or more business than If acting separate
ly, ana do it cheaper, for they could dispense
with a great many costly things a number of
high-priced employes, for instance. One power
bouse would be sufficient for the consolidated
system. This would be a great saving."
The informant added that all of these things
were being quietly but earnestly discussed by
the officials of both roads, with the evident
purpose of merging the rival interests. He
did not think this could be brought absut im
mediately, but was satisfied it would be
effected at no very distant day.

Pittsburg Traction and Electric Hold Up
Uudrr Adverse Influences.
Stock trading yesterday was restricted to
two properties Luster and Electric, sales of
which were 202 shares. Electric was slightly
weaker, as a result of postponing or abandon
ing the dividend, but the looked-for break did
not materialize. Luster was a trifle stronger.
Or Inactive shares, the gassers showed no
material change, with the exception of Manu
facturers', which was offered down to 15 with
out buyers. The tractions were steady. Pitts
burg stood up bravely under the adverse de
cision of the State. Supreme Court. Pittsburg
and Western common and Switch and Signal
lost ground. Enterprise Savings moved up a
fraction.

THE SILVER BILL.
Prospects of lis Passage In Congress Gives
Vitality to Wall Street A Spurt
la Sugar and a Strong Close
Bonds More Active
Nzw York. June 5. Tho stock market was
less animated to-day, but displayed a firm
undertone from opening to close, and although
there was considerable Irregularity almost
everything traded in is higher to-night. There
was a marked absence of pressure to sell such.
as has made the dealings of the past week so
feverish aud weak, and while the demand was
moderate it was sufficient even with the dispo
sition of the foreigners to sell their favorites.
The discussion of tho Bilver bill in the House
of Representatives to-day revived the hopeful
feeling and the possibility of early action ou
the same soon showed in improved prices and
increased animation.
The market outside of Sugar Refineries
showed no particular activity, and that stock
seemed to have lost Its power over the regular
list, and when it declined there was no response
and its subsequent advance met with no
recognition whatever. The money question to
day was not a factor, and while the sub-Treas
ury continues to draw funds from the banks
the flow from the interior more than makes up
the drain. Funds were easy on call to-day at
from 4 to 5 per cent.
Among the features of the day's trading
Sugar Refineries was the most prominent, and
after opening up 1 per cent at 76c it reacted
to 76Kc but later steadily advanced with
moderate fluctuations until near tne close,
when its best price was reached. It finally
closed at 80c There was no news of any kind
with a bearing upon the stock, and the rise
seems to be only a natural reaction from the
late depression.
In the regular list Rock Island was strong on
the explanation that the company had charged
81,000,000 betterments- to operating expenses.
The market made veryllttle progress In either
direction until well in the afternoon, when the
influence of the prospects of a silver bill being
passed bad its legitimate effect, and several
stocks moved up sharply, and among tho most
noted were Cleveland, Cincinnati. Chicago an
St. Louis, Missouri Pacific Chicago Gas,
Wheeling and Lake Erie, Hocking Valley and
Ohio Southern. The Vanderbilt stocks were
again prominent for strength throughout the
aay, and served to ctve a firm tone to the deal
ings, especially in the forenoon.
The close was quiet and strong, generally at
about the best prices of the day. The list Is al
most invariably hlcher. and sugar rose 4
Cleveland. Cincinnati. Chicago and St. Louis
and Chicago Gas 1 each. Missouri Pacific 1,
and New England 1 per cent.
Railroad bunds were more active to-day, but
while the general tone was still firm there was
consideralile.irregularlty about the movements
and little feature. The dealing extended to
81,091.000, out of which Reading is. which were
the only active issues to-day, furnished 8102,000.

The .Post says: A partial explanation of the
Rock Island unfavorable annual renort was
telegraphed from Chicago this forenoon, say
ing that the report would show SL013.000 spent
for permanent Improvements, this amount
being equivalent to 2 per cent on the capital.
It was upon this that the stock rallied from
03 in the first half hour to 94 just after 12
o'clock. But it is well known that the terms
"permanent Improvements" and "betterments"
too often mean only the necessary enlargement
of facilities to accommodate the existing
traffic, though this expenditure may not bave
any effect to increase the earnings or profits.
A railroad must, in fact, be almost entirely re
constructed every 15 or 20years. Many experts
say 10 or 12 years.
The arguments, therefore, that the large
sums expended for these betterments and per
manent improvements are an additional dividend-earning
capital are generally received by
the public with a great deal of allowance, and
In this case the sentiment of the street appears
to be in favor of making the allowance because
Rock Islarfd at present prices is too high com
pared with other dividend payers; for instance,
with Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago and St,
Louis common, which pays 4 per cent, and is
earning over 6 per Cent, though it sells at 78 to
79, while Rock Island paying no more and not
earning as much sells at 94.
Many other instances might also be given, as
Western Union, Richmond Terminal preferred
and some others, of which the managements
are at least calculated to Inspire as much confi
dence as tbat of Rock Island. The Rock Island
figures are of the utmost importance because
they are to some extent an Index of the busi
ness ot the other granger roads west of Chicago.

LOCAL LIVE STOCK.
Drovers Report Business Very Doll and
Few of Tbem Are Woking Money
Tbe Demand for Dressed and
Canned Olrnts Good.
Drovers report Very poor pickings the past
few weeks. The live stock dealer who comes
out even of late has good reason for self-congratulation.
The truth is that the majority are
losers. Prices paid at Chicago for this week's
cattle at East Liberty were 19c abovo last
week's prices, and here there was a drop of 15c
per hundred. On this week's transactions
drovers are not estimating profits but losses.
There were about 15 loads of cattle at the
East Liberty yards, designed for the local
trade, sent on East in first bands for want of
buyers here. As markets are dull East as well
as here, it is probable that the stock sent, on
would go farther to fare worse. The loss to our
local drovers pioves gain to dealers in Chicago
dressed beef. In the latter line trade is boom
ing, and the number of beeves handled is not
far from 60 per cent larger than at this time a
year ago.
Both dressed beef and canned meats are in
very active demand, and cattle dealers in Chi
cago are on tbe make at the expense of Pitts
burg butchers and drovers. One of our lead
ing pork packers received advices from Chi
cago to-day that hogs had dropped to 83 75 fir
tops, the lowest price of this season. Tne drop
is durto heavy receipts and hot weather.
Following is the report of transactions at the
East Liberty Stock Yards for the week past:

Country Produce Jobbing; Prices.
Elgin creamery butter is firm at last week's
prices, when markets were very weak. The
lowest point of tbe season bas, no doubt, been
reached, and any future changes are apt to be
toward higher prices. Country roll bntter bas
scarcely any value. Shippers have been with
holding stock of late. A leading Liberty street
commission man 'said to-day: "I find it impossi
ble of late to sell country rolls at a decent
price. One of my customers lately shipped me
1,000 pounds with instruetions to sell at what
ever I could get, I had to sell it for grease at
2c per pound, and yet It was a fair quality of
butter." New Ohio cheese is coming freely,
and It is only a question of a few days when
qnotations will be reduced. Eegs are in good
supply and prices are a shade lower. For job
lots 15c per dozen Is now tbe outside price.
Strawberries of choice quality are scarce and
firm. New potatoes are tending downward.
Good old stock is firm. Cabbage of good qual
ity are scarce and firm. Lemons and oranges
are tending upward. Bananas are quiet at
quotations, owlns to liberal supplies. Poultry
Is plenty and lower.

Wheat Less Excited, Active and Generally
Lower Corn and Oats Stronger!
With the Latter Decidedly
Higher Pork Dull.
CHICAGO Trading in wheat was fairly act
ive to-day, chiefly on local account. The feel
ing was somewb at unsettled, but the market
was not so excitable and did not respond so
readily to bull influences as a few days ago.
Evidently some of the operators who have been
on the long side ot the market are trading on
the short side now. which tends to keep down
the market and prevents prices from advancing
so sharply.
The market opened about 0KC lower, and
prices further declined He then advanced
lJiilJc, fluctuated some and closed about He
higher for July, Ko lower for August, un
changed for September and He lower for De
cember than closine prices yesterday. The
weather was fine abroad and favorable for the
crops here, and with fair offerings and only
light demand an easy feeling prevailed early.
Bnt news coming on the market was of a char
acter to turn many early sellers to buyers, ana
a steadv upturn in prices resulted.
Bad crop news from tbe winter wheat States
was again received. The Cincinnati .Price
Current. It was claimed, estimated the croD of
the United States at about 425,000.000 bushel3
that is, 275,000,000 bushels of winter, and 150,
000,0001 bushels of spring, with chances of win
ter wheat mors likely to go below the estimate
than above it.
Corn was irctlve and stronger, higher prices
being the rule on all futures. Tbe advance was
due to local influences though bad crop re
ports had some effect, several large commission
houses buying freely of July, supposed to be
for a prominent provision concern. The mar
ket was rather dull at the opening, with first
sales a shade under tbe closing prices of yester
day, but soon became stronger and sold up
ruled easier and closed 1ie better than yes
terday. Oats were active and strong, and prices do
cidedly higher. Tbe advance was due to mod
erate receipts, rather unfavorable drop reports,
light offerings and a rood demand for all futures,
especially for August and September, which
advanced lJQlc on light purchases by a
prominent operator. June advanced le and
July e, and clnscd the same to c below out
side figures. Reports were tbat the crop would
be considerably reduced, and advices from
Tennessee said tbat the crop in tbat State had
been abandoned.
Very little was doing In pork, and the feel
ing was steady. Prices ruled about lc lower,
closing quiet.
Quite an active business was transacted in
lard, and the market was stronger. Prices
ruled 2K6c higher, and the market closed
comparatively steady.
Trading in ribs was quite active, and the feel
ing was stronger. Prices were advanced 2
5c. and the market ivas fairly well supported.
