Monday. June 2, 1S90. (
At Herr'a Island the run of cattle was
scarcely up to that of last Monday. Quality
of offerings was good, average demand was
active and markets were a shade firmer than
they were a week ago. Prices, however,
"were practically the same, and were as fol
lows: Prime heavy Western beeves, ?5 40
5 CO; medium weights, 54 7S5 15; prime
light weights and butchers' selections
weighing 900 to 1,100 lbs, $4 354 75;
common to fair, thin and rough steers,?3 25
4 25. Country stock was in light supply
and for good and sufficient reasons, namely,
that there is no money in bringing stock to
market at present prices. Fresh cows were
held at about the old range and sales were
reported at $2535 per head. D. O. Pisor
sold two choice milkers at $32 50 each. Calves
were active and higher with ic to 6c per
poind as the range. Bulls and dry cows sold
at Sg3c per ponnd. Receipts From Chicago,

heep. Lambs nnd Swine.
Supply of sheep was above late average, but
demand was good for all offered, and markets
were firm at a shade better prices than last
week. McCrearyfc Sergeant sold some choice
115-lb yearlings at fS 25 and good 175-lb sheep
at 15 53. Good sheep wore scarce. Tbongb
one or two lots brought S5 75, the ceneral ranee
or prices was H 50 to So SO. Sprlne lambs were
In good demand, at 6c tnSc per pound. Re
ceipts, from Cbicago: LZeiglcr, 100 head.

The offerings of hogs Mere unusually light.
vThe season Is now practically over tor pork on
butchers' stalls. All offered found ready gale
at a ranee of SI 10 to SI 45 forOhios, of which
tbe supply mainly consisted; and $4 25 to H 80
for Pennsylvania. Receipts, from Ohio:

week, 55L
Wood' Run nnd Enpt l.Ibeny.
The offerings of cattle were 229 head, of
which 172 were from Chicago and the balance
from St. Louis. Markets were slow, but all
were sold at ,c to 5Jc for Chicago cattle and
4Jc to S4 35 for St. Louis. Best was 15c above
those offered last week, and it was found im
possible to advance prices here, so that mar
gins ofprofit were more than wiped out There
were 527 sheep and lambs on tbe market, and
following was tbe ranee of prices: Sheep. 5c to
EJfc; yearling lambs, 5c to 03c.
Hogs were in light supply, there being but SS
head offered. All were retailed at Si 35.
There were 9S loads of cattle on the market
acamst about tbe same number last Monday.
A laree proportion of tbe receipts were fair to
pood butcher stock weighinc from 1,000 to 1,100
as. There were very few heavy bcevei on the
market, and no primes in car load lots. Tbe sup
plies were from Chicago, St. Louis and Omaha.
Country cattle were conspicuously absent from
the market, as were prime heavy beeves. Re
ceipts being fully 20 loads above tbe wants of
our local trade, the situation was entirely in the
buyer's favor. Buyers were scarce at the open
ing of the market.
No l Borers Enough.
A stockman said that there were not buyers
enough at the opening to take over a dozen
loads out of 98 loads on sale. The result was
that markets opened very slow at a decline of
10 to 15c from prices of last Monday. Cost at
Chicago was fully 10c higher than lat week, so
that tbe drover who comes out even is very
lucky. There is little doubt that shippers will
lose money on this week's transactions. With
bicber prices at Chicago and lower prices here,
with an excess of stock over the warns or onr
local trade, drovers cannot fail to be losers in
their live stock operations this week. Last
neek tbere was little orno profit, and now there
is less than none
Tbere were 17 car loads of sheep and lambs
on the market, and at the opening buyers and
sellers were far apart in their views of values.
For choice stock last week's prices were asked,
but it is not prooaL.e they were obtained.
Common and low grades v ere verv slow at a
decline from last week's prices.
Yearlings and spring lambs show a downward
tendency.
There were 24 car loads of hogs on the mar
ket, and prices were 5c stronger than closing
rates of Saturday. The range for Phlladel
phias was H 15 to S4 20. The hog market

CHICAGO A good business was transacted
In wheat to-day and the feeling was nnsettled.
Fine weather tor the growing crop and a very
small increase in the visible supply Influenced
an easier feeling early, and there was more de
sire to realize. A prominent operator credited
wih being a buyer Saturday was reported to
have sold freely shortly after the opening.
The opening was about lc lower for July and
K?ic lower for the more deferred futures, ral
lied Kc tor July and then started down, price
for July declining lc and the deferred futures
IJi'S'lXc. rcovered ana closed about Ko lower
for July. JJc higher for August and JJc higher
for September than closing figures Saturday.
Crop reports from tho winter wheat district
continue to come tu bad.
Corn was moderately active, within a narrow
range, and the feeling was rather steady. There
was a very good demand for June, a good many
orders beme on tha market tor this month, and
considerable changing was done in order to fill
the same. The market opened tbe same to a
trifle under the closing Saturday, was firm and
sold up KKc, eased off and closed about the
same as Saturday.
Oats were fairly active and steadier, especially
for the more deferred deliveries. The strength
was due mainly to the light deliveries on June
contracts.
Trading In pork was fairly active and the
feeling was unsettled. Opening sales were
made at about the closing figures of Saturday,
but later transactions were mads at 67c
lower range. Toward tbe close the market
settled back 1012c, closing quiet.
Afair business was done In lard, buta further
decline was established. Price on the whole
range declined 5Q7c. closing tame.
Short ribs A good business was transacted

THE NEWS AKD GOSSIP OP THE TOWN
Charles Lowther, who resides in Los
Angeles, CaJ., but who formerly called Pitts

End. A short time before he started East
Mr. Lowther made an extended journey
through the southern part of California to
look into real estate and other matters. He
was there during the boom of two or Ahree
years ago, when property values went up
like a rocket to come down like a stick. The
sad effects of the collapse, he says, are to be
seen on every hand. Improvements are in a
very backward state. The craze extended to
all classes of people, and all were financially
crippled. Many were ruined. He says it
will take years for the people to fully re
cover from the disaster. All this mischief
was wrought by a few speculators, who drained
the conn try of ready cash and then disappeared,
Iraving their victims to sink or swimas the case
might be.
It is fortunate for Pittsburg that she possess
es enough Scoteb-Irish hard sense to enable her
to steer clear of all kinds of delusions and
maintain valnes on a solid basis. It is a sub
ject of common remark among financiers that
there Is less speculation here than in any other
city in tbe country. Solid business alone re
ceives recognition. So long as this course shall
be pursued there need be no fear of a reaction
In any department of business, save such as is
due to the exigencies of trade and to the vary
ing demands of the seasons. The man who
builds a mill or factory here has reasonable as
surance of a market for his products, and the
worklngman who buys a lot and puts a bouse
on it may rest satisfied that It will be worth
more a year hence than It cost him. Values

Quotations.
Tbe effects of almost two holidays were quite
apparent when the stock brokers met on
'Change yesterday to resume business. There
were very few bnying orders, and nobody ap
peared to be very sorry for It. The crowd was
not In a trading humor.
'Westinghonso Electric took a turn for the
better, which was a surprise to many who had
been talking of still lower figures. It sold at
2&J against S8 on Saturday. Tbe delayed
dividend and Pullman combination were fruit
ful subjects of disenssion, but nothing new
was drawn out. The drift of opinion seemed
to be that the dividend for the quarter ending
with April will not enrich tbe stockholders.
Philadelphia Gas was a fraction stronger,
Bridgewater and Wheeling about steady, and
Chartiers weaker, though it flopped to tbe
active list, which was in Its favor. Central and
Citizens' Traction showed no material change,
but Pittsburg lost ground. Pleasant Valley
was steady. Sales were 210 shares.

A Dull nnd Fcntnrelesi Oil Market Notes
From the Field.
There was a total absence of expression In
the oil market yesterday, though there have
been times when the feeling was at a lower ebb
and trading of smaller volume. The market
slumped soon after the opening on selling by
Oil City, and later on rallied on local buying,
but tbe range was less than a cent. Pittsburg
was the highest point. At one time when the
price here was 90o it was 89Jc in Oil City.
The principal fluctuations were: Opening,
90c; highest, 90Jc; lowest and closing. 89c
Saturday's clearances were 1,017,000 barrels.
According to the monthly report of opera
tions in tbe field production for May was con
siderably In excess of that of April. During
May the total number of new wells completed
was 534, of which 83 were dry holes. The ag
gregate new production was 8,507 barrels per
day. Tbe most productive field was that of
Allegheny county, where several good wells
were drilled in.
Rider's well, at Chartiers, is pumping 125 bar
rels a day. Tbe Robinson No. 2 on tbe Beck
farm at Chartiers. reached the first pay streak
on Saturday, and looks like a good well. They
are now drilling into tbe second pay sand.
Wibber, Eachel & Company are drilling In their
well on the Jlay lot at Chartiers. Vandegrift,
Still Company's McKeonn No. 2 Is in the
first pay sand and doing 100 barrels. It will be
drilled deeper. A big gusher is expected, as It
is in good range with tho Young farm phe
nomenon, which is still producing 700 barrels a
day.
Tbe Robella Company's well, on the Straw
farm, is down to the third sand and seems to
be a failure. Tbere is a good showing of gas,
though. Tbe McKees' Rocks and Bear Creek
Oil Companies' wells at Chartiers continue
each to put 250 barrels in the tank every day.
The Kanawha Company's well has settled
down to 30 barrels a day. The Barnswell ven
ture, at Wildwood, expected to reach the oil
sand yesterday evening.

AGGRESSIVE BEARS.
Aided by Tight Sloney, They DInnago to
Keep Walt Street In a Feverish Con
dltlon Material Losses la
Dlonv of Ibe Ftock.
New York, June 2. The stock market to
day, when left to itself, was quiet with a steady
to firm tone, but the bears were again very ag
gressive, and aided by tbe temporary scarcity
of money incident to tbe first of the month
and tbe transfer of large sums of money
through certain large financial operations, they
were enabled after the first hour of business
to keep tbe market in a feverish and weak
state, and bring abont material losses in many
stocks. The Trusts were responsible for most
of tbe feeling of insecurity among holders of
railroad stocks, and Chicago Gas led off with a
drop of 5Ji per cent, from 53 to 47 on the news
that a receiver .wonld be appointed to-day. A
rally of about 3 per cent followed the an
nouncement of the appointment, tbe appointee
being regarded as favorable to the Trust.
The early London figures were lower than
our closing of Saturday, but private cables re
ported that tbe London market bad been
rigged from this side, and tbe succeeding pur
chases for foreign account with the strength
developed In the early dealings gave color to
the assertion. The pressure upon tbe trusts
was instituted before the expiration of the first
half hour, however, and sugar was sold down
on the rumor that the Court of Appeals wonld
soon band down an adverse decision, and al
though there was and could be no verification
of the story the trust declined almost steadily
during tbe day.
In the regular list the bears naid Dartlcnlar
attention to Missouri Pacific, Atchison and
Union Pacifle, the declines In the two former
leading tu tbe impression that the Gould party
were not favorable to a restoration of rates,
though this was in all probability tbe Impres
sion designed. Tbe rates for money ran up to
12 per cent at tbe close, and tbe steady harden
ing prevented any rally toward tbe end of the
session. At that time there were many rumors
of reduction In rates by the Lake Shore and
other roads started, and Cleveland, Cincinnati,
Chicago and St. Louis declined sharply, though
under severe pressure, and Louisville Saw ai.
bany and Chicago dropped 8 per cent from Us
last recorded sale.
Aming other specialties to show marked
weak-oss were Colorado Coal, Wheeling and
Lake Eric preferred aud Lackawanna. Rich
nj'md and West Point sold ex-rights to-day,
but as the rights were valued atunly one-fourth
ot 1 Ler cent that fact did not make much dif
ference In Its price, but the stock was weak all
tbe way out, as was also Lackawanna. The
bears again succeeded in uncovering numer
ous stop orders, and material declines were
thus brougbt about In many stocks. ,
The close was active and weak at about tbe
lowest prices of tbe day, although except in
tbe stocks mentioned tbe movements were in
significant and the business dull. Almost the
entire list is lower. Sugar is off 4. Lacka
wanna , Chicago Gas 1. Missouri Pacitic
IK. Richmond and West Point 1J, Union Pa
cmc and Wheeling and Lake Erie, preferred,
lj-g. antl Colorado Coal iji.
Railroad bonds were quiet all the way out,
and while not sympathizing with stocks in the
decline, failed to show any life or strength
whatever, and the final changes are in almost
all cases tor insignificant fractions only. Issues
were only $1,179,000, out or which New York
Central firsts registered furnished J200.U00. and
Texas Pacific firsts S155,U30. Tbe only impor
tant change in price was an advance of 2 per
cent In Kansas and Texas general certificates
toss.
Government bjnds have been dull and
steady.
State bonds have been entirely neglected.
Tho i'ott sajs: Aside from the reports in re
gard to Chicago Gas, there was no news ot any
kind, either in connection with, railroad affairs
or tbe general financial prospect, to cause the
decline in prices of stock to-day,. On the con
trary, the money market la beconabg easier, u
was shown not only by the bank- statement on
Saturday, but by tbe fact that money on call In
Chicago Is now below 5 per cent. Exchange on
New York in that city a now 60 cents per
SLO00 premium, and It is to be expected that in
a few weeks money should settle down to 8 per
cent here. The railroad earnings all over the
country continue better than they have been
for several years, and, though a perfect main
tenance of the agreed rates can never be ex
pected, the prospeots now are that rates will at
least be higher before they are lower. There
is one feature of-tbe present situation, how
ever, which has contributed to dampen the
courage of the speculators on the bull side, viz:
The proposition to make such large increases
in some stocks of which there are already
enormous amounts on the market. Missouri
Pacific stock is to be increased 20 per cent by
tbe lssne of $10 0OO.C00 more; Atchison 86 per
cent by the issue of nearly 127,000,000 more, and
Richmond Terminal 40 per cent by the issue of
$20,000,000 more. Tbe Increase of Atchison
stock would not call for the investment of any
more money by tbe present stockholders, bat
tbe Missouri Pacific and Richmond Terminal
schemes call for the investment of about 81,4,
000,000 more of money in bonds by the present
stockholders.
