LAUGHING TO OEDER.
Bemarkable Experiment ot Dr. Mat
son Before the Art School.
EVOLYIKG ELECTRIC EMOTIONS.
Hating a Man's Face Expressive TVithont
His Knowledge.
ILLUSTRATING AETISTIC ANATOMY
A sane, -wide awake and healthy man
laughing heartily without mirth, frowning
without anger, weepinp without sorrow,
and Tanning the gamut of emotions without
feeling any or having the slightest idea that
the expression ot his face was anything but
normal, was the remarkable spectacle fur
nished the pupils of the Pittsburg Art
School yesterday.
Dr. E. G. Matron delivered the conclud
ing lecture ot a course on artistic anatomy,
and demonstratea the physiology of the
muscles of expression as shown in a living
model. Dr. Slatson had explained theo
retically the action of these mus
cles, and he now undertook,
with the aid of a living model,
and an electric battery to demonstrate that
expression is dependent upon the action of
various muscles, and that these muscles,
if set in action without the voluntary aid of
the model, would give the desired expres
sion. A life class model now sitting in the
school was engaged ior the experiment.
TKACING THE MUSCLES.
First, the courses of the various muscles
were traced in chalk over the features o. the
model, who was an elderly man. The work
was thus mapped out, and the use of each
muscle explained. Next, when the doctor
had applied the battery to bis own face and
the faces of the audience, in order to reas
sure the old man the doctor rjlacedone polo
of the battery behind the ear of the subject,
and with the other pole touched the mnscle
to be operated on. Thus without the model
having any idea of what his phisiognomy
reflected, the great zygomatic mnscle could
be made to give the expression of laughter
to the face. Then by touching other muscles
the old man's face was made to display con
tempt and disgust. The latter expression
remained on his face long after the battery
had been removed.
THE AUDIENCE ALSO AFFECTED.
During the experiments the audience
were many times convulsed with laughter
at the involuntary grimaces of the model.
By one application he was forced to close
his hand, and the effects of the experiment
remaining he fonnd it very difficult for
a long time to unchnch his fingers.
Ducbenne, a frenchman, was the first to
carry experiments oi this nature to any de
gree of success. He secured for a subject,
n old paralyzed army pensioner, whose face
was almost insensible to any emotion. Elec
tricity could be apslied to this man without
producing any painful reaction.
This is the first time that the experiment
has been performed in America.
