-W--' THE PITTSBURG DISPATCH, THURSDAY, MAT 22, 1890. s - IN VERY GOOD SHAPE. Local Financial Barometers Show a Aright Business Sky All Over. SHERIFF SALES UNUSUALLY FEW. Executions on Only $1 I 52,000 of the County Valuation. PRICKS LOW AND Bl'CULATIOr, QUIET Manufacturing and commercial comma nltlci are prone to ovcrtrmlo themselves liou time to time, the Intervals being ttgu Sated according to ipcclflo circumstances. The rercr li rollowa.d by tlio collipie, or rather prostration, kTiown as a panic Some people have been sounding the toealn for orue time, nnd adriolnc t"8 application of iee water to the patlent'i teniplea, but It would appear from the recorda of financial distress In thla country that tho trade pulae li atlll normal. However, tbo alarroUta doubtlcai bavo their proper place la crea tion and their alarun from time to time are salutary. An examination of the Sheriff aale Hat for the June term ahowa that financial dis asters are at present but one-eighth of what they have been at times in the last 25 years. It is true the list fills five columna ol a new s paper, but it ia not aet with the space economizing features that marked it during panic timea, nnd might in thia respect be compressed at least 33 per cent. Another thing to be considered is the fact tbat the June and December lists are always by far the largest, and it is June that ia under review. Of the list of 03 abstracts of property ol fered, 53 arc advertised to be sold on tax liens, tax-paying having been neglected from various causes; some on account of carelessness, enssedness or to settle disputes. Of 20 others, some are on account of luna tics or to make title, and some on delayed executions', etc., so that but 20 represent actual distress. KOT MUCH FINANCIAL DISTRESS. These 20 are mortgage cases, and these foot up but about $120,000, and one on a tract of coal land in Elizabeth township makes more than half the amount. In most f these there is large salvage, so that the actual business distress represented is quite small when compared with the aggregate wealth ol the county a mere fraction. Since the war there have been three panics. In Sheriff Fleming's term the ad vertising array was very large, some say larger than during tbe administration of Sheriff File, who had the principal task of cleaning up tbe wreckage of the panic of 1873. A part of its effect was felt during Sheriff Hare's administration, but the main depression was felt' between 1675 and 1879. Sheriff Fleming administered the office in the latter part of the sixties, when war prices were tumbling. Wheat sbriv eled 33 per cent in price, prints and muslins about 75 per cent,' and most commodities in proportion, and many merchants were unable to get rid af goods in time to escape the crash, while others were so much in toxicated by theirlarge gains that they re fused to believe kyclone prophets in the business worldl The tumble began in Sheriff Oluley's time and the passage of the national bankrupt law ac celerated it. It may astonish some people to know that the business of the sheriff's office is less now than it was it 1857, but Mr. Cluley's long experience enables him to testify to that effect LITIGATION HAS NOT INCREASED. There has been no increase in new suits entered in the cpurts. During the Jnne term last year their were entered in Common Fleas Ko. 1 7K5 suits; for the June term this year the:fc are to date 581, and the total number is expected to be near that of last year. At) the April term of Common Plea's last vial 5S1 suits were entered, and this year to dale for tbe same term 802; but Mr. McQuiltv states that the year will not average above tbat of several previous ones. Whitney Sg Stephenson say that prices of stocks, as weft " ol other commodities, are comparatively low, though tbey are not enamored olfWestern mortgages and think there is aoh likely to be danger from this source than (from any other. Mr. Stephen son is "iorinst" the placing of Western mortgages. He wants the Western farmers to go fu.fl East for money, as he says wo have nectcSr nil we have cot. Colonel v'illiam A. Hcrron says that while sorti. peoplo are more inclined to peculate 4tn they should be, yet he con siders thA (kntry quite sound, financially, it being nbVjTto stand moro Inflation than in the pant, tho circulating medium being larger tlinn formerly. Colonel Hcrron says he lias cc n n sufficient number of panics to feel himself cnpnblo ofjudclng quite correctly, nnd lie regards the conditional! very dissimi lar In those that prevailed In 1K73. 'J'licrolsn considerable Indebtedness, but greatly en larged ability to sustain It, SO DANOKIt Or PAN 1 .11.. Borne speculator nra endeavoring to frighten people over the crop prospects, but while moat people are somewhat depressed on account or the excesslvo moisture of the Inst 20 months they comfort themselves with the rejection that crops will stand 20 months'.excctsive moisture better than the name Uhgth of drouth, and in some 7,000, 000 square miles there are likely to be tome pretty? extensive patches where conditiona will be favorable, so tbat after all there is not likelr to be danger of famine. itlontooih Blende Well. E. W. Psrsball, a business man and poli tician of Warren, Pa., was in tbe city yes terday. Ho itays that there will be a strong Republican bolt in Warren county if Dela matcris the Republican nominee for Gov ernor.'' .Either Montootb, or Stone, he says, will poll a strong vote. n Fn?J( spasms, St. Vitus dance, nervous ness add. hysteria are soon cured by Dr Mile'f Nervine.
