    IT'S A REAL WHALE.
The Largest Gusher in this County
Spouting in the Bundred-Foot.
FOREST GROYE PRESBYTERIANS
Floating In Oil lite Sardines, and They
Keep Their Temper Well.
FORTY DOLLARS AX HOUR GOIJiG TO P0E
The largest oil gusher yet struck in this
county came in during Thursday night
within a few rods of the parsonage of the
Forest Grove Presbyterian Church, in Rob
inson township, a mile and a half south of
Groveton, on the Pittsburg and Lake Erie
Kailway. There is no doubt of what it was
doing yesterday, and though it may slow
down in a day or two, .some people think it
will be even greater when the tools are taken
out of the hole.
The well is on the Andrew Young farm,
above Montour run, and extends the terri
tory to the south from the Depp farm gush
ers. It is owned by the Vandergrifts, and
is the greater surprise from the impression
that the territory was good only for gas.
as soon as tbe oil began to gush tank
builders were telegraphed for, and a force
n ent to work with a will, but an immense
amount of wealth will float down the Ohio
before the oil-saver gets to work, as the
boiier is not yet moved, and the tanks will
be built before the oil can be diverted into
them. Meantime the golden fluid is stream
ing down the hill at the rate of more than
40 barrels an hour, making the hearts of
even non-owners sick.
COVERED WITH OIL.
Montour run is covered with iridescence,
and its big bends suggest horizontal rain
bows, and oh, how it smells. It is so loud
that it fills the nostrils ot people as far down
as Coraopolis. "When the astonished vil
lagers awoke yesterday morning they
thought the pipe line up the run had burst.
The Young well is in the 100-foot sand,
and is only a little over 1,700 feet deep. This
sand is quite uniform in that section, and
contains much oil, but must be handled
very carefullv. or the salt water ruins the
wells. Mr. McXall tells of several good oil
wells that were destroved by allowing the
drill to penetrate a foot or two too far. The
first well on the Knopf farm, a mile further
south, was thus destroyed. It was flowing
20 barrels a day withont help, but a little
more punching let in the salt water and the
oil disappeared. The same late met the
Moore well, hat she had gas enough to pay.
Mr. V. H. Ewing, whose experience as
an oil operator extends over more than 25
Tears, observed the working of the Young
well for some hours yesterday, and stated
that she was undoubtedly making at the rate
of about 1,000 barrels a day.
THE IKONT OP FATE.
The irony of fate is strongly accented in
this district. Rev. Dr. Beacom some months
ago handled oil drillers without gloves, and
seemed to think, if correctly reported, that
their morals were poisonous to the commu
nity. Ifow while his neighbors are down on
their marrow-bones, praying for an oil
strike on their farms, the strikes
persist in getting closer to Dr.
Beacom. However, there ought to be some
consolation in the hope that a strike on the
parsonage ground will float the church for
years, and the members' stipend can all be
diverted to the cause of missions.
Were it not that the approach to the
Young farm is almost unfordable the hill
would have been covered with sightseers,
bnt one must either wade in Robinson town
ship mud knee-deep, or climb up the bed of
a stream that has cot manv feet below the
pleistocene to get to Forest Grove, and only
love ot lucre coma overcome the discour
agements. COBAOPOLIS CEAZT.
Coraopolis, which some people proposed to
varnish and Ience up last season, has sud
denly developed into one of the liveliest
towns in the county, and though there are no
licensed saloons in the village, no one need
go long short of a supply ot snake-bite cure.
.Building lots are being leased for drilling
purposes. .A. D. Grey leased one and got
$75 bonus, and theownerof the lot adjoining
Edward Smith's .house got $100 bonus,
though it is but a 20-foot
lot. The Jolly Brothers have
$16,000 worth of confidence in the territory,
and have joined forces with the Augusta Oil
Company. There are five rigsup withincun
shot ot the well, on George Ferree's farm,
one of them being in 'Squire Ferree's or
chard. Some enterprising man might make
a fortune by establishing a hotel in the vil
lage. The "Westview field will likely come to
the front with more gushers in a few days.
Gailey Brothers 2o. 1, Rea farm, is down
1,700 feet. The result is important. The
Hahn is down 1,500 feet, Keating and Hoff
man wells 1,000 feet, and Ivorv Kb. 2 and
Baxter Oil Company's Xo. 1, 500 feet. Hoff
man. Rodgers & Co.'s 2fo. 1, Kauffman
Jarm, Callery Junction, and the E. H.
Adams & Co.'s wells, in the 100-foot, are
dry. Patterson & Tate's well, Brandon tarm,
58 feet in sand, is full of oil. Steel & Co.'s
Uo. 2. Sherman farm, is a 20-barreler, and
McClung & Co.'s Graham farm shows
well. The Fisher Oil Company's No. 2, on
the Ferguson farm, Shaunnpin, is filled
1.000 feet and will be small. The Turteyfoot
field new daily production for March is 513
barrels, an increase of 180 barrels over Feb
ruary. YOUR CEILING IS CRACKED AKD
BROKEN.
How Do We Know?
Because we receive an average of 50 let
ters each day from people all over the Union
who say so, and these are onlv the "one in
five hundred" that tell of it- And they
write to ask about our patent paneled iron
ceilings for Mores, halls, churches, etc. And
now we have the newest, neatest, most artis
tic thine out, especially for residences and
nice offices. Northrop's embossed metal
ceiling plates. .No paper or frescoe decora
tion can compare with these beautiful de
signs in relief. Adapted to either new or
old ceilings. Illustrated circulars tree.
