The offering of cattle at Allegheny yards were in all 17o head. Quality was scarcely up to last w cck, but about all had been sold at noon at price ranging from 4c to oc per pound. The source of supnly was Chicazo and prices aid at headquarters were 10 to 15c higher than ast week, with little or no advance in rates here. There wero about 100 head ot calves on the market, and demand was weak at a range of 5)ic to G!c per pound. The offer.ngs of sheep and lambs made a total of 500 head. The outside price for sheep was 6c and for lambs 7c per pound. Spring lambs cold at 12). per pound. There were 193 hogs on the market, and the range of prices was H 50 to SI 60 per hundred. At East Liberty. The supply of cattle for local trade at East Liberty has varied very little for three weeks past, the total being about 70 load. To-day there were few if any prime cattle on the market in car load lots. The quality of cattle in demand in this mar ket, namely smooth, light butcher stock, weigh ing from 1.100 to 1,300 lbs., was in short supply, as it has been for months past. It seems that this class of beeves finds better markets in Chicago than here of late, and as a result onr markets are not well enough supplied in this line. Common and low grade stock has been in supply abovo demand for some weeks past, and on tbese grades markets drag all tbe time. The cattle markets opened up this morning very slow, and as prices were higher than last week at Chicaro, from wbich supplies principally came the outlook was anything but good for drovers. " Chicago prices were 15 to 20c higher than las: week, but it was found impossible to bring buyers here up to the notion that cattlo were worth more than they were a week ago. The offerings of sheep and lambs this morn ing were about 12 loads, and markets were steady at prices of last week, the outside price for the best w ethers being 0c and lambs, 7c. There were 26 loads of bogs on sale, and prices were 5c higher than the closing rates of Saturday. Tbe best selected hogs sold at S4 45 64 50. TTSu MARKETS BY WIRE. Whent Drops In the Fnco or Bnlllih Crop New. More Interest In Corn Hoc Pradneu Qnlet at Medinm Figures. CHICAGO There was only a light business in wheat to-day, and the market ruled qniet and easier. Ou'.sido business was light, and local operators manifested but little inclination to trade. No ontslde news was reported to stimu late trade or excite action. The opening was just about the same as closing figures Satur day, ruled weak and declined Jc rallied JgC, again eased off and closed Ji5ac '0,fr than Saturday. The weather in tha West was re ported rather unfavorable to wheat. The season generally is reported backward ana less seeding of sprlne wheat done than at this time last year. More intereat than usual was manifested in corn, and trading was of a larger volume than for some das past. The feeling was firmer, and transactions were at higher prices, which were well maintained until near the close. The better tone was attributed largely to tbe back ward spring which induced New York local shorts to cover, though on the advance July longs were said to have sold freely. Tho mar ket was firm at Saturday's prices, eased off .c, rnled firm and closed JiSJc higher than Satur day. Oats were quiet and steady at about the same prices as Saturday. The offerincs were fair and the demand was not particularly urgent. Onl v a moderate volume of business was done in port, but the feelinc wasstronger. About tbe middle of the session pricrs were advanced 5ffi"Kc,the market closing comparatively steady at medium figures. A moderate business was transacted in lard and tbe feeling was firmer. Prices were ad vanced 2tc, closing steady. Short Ribs Quite a cood business was done, a stronger feeling being developed. Wood, Harmon fc Co. were dickering for another 40-acre tract ot land down tbe Fort Wayno road. Yesterday was a quiet day on Fourth avenue. Only works of necessity and mercy were attended to. Tho weather could hardly have been worse. According to Wall street opinion the great factor now overhanging the market is the Windom silver bill. Until something definite is done in this direction speculation is liable to sag. The Reading Railroad reports that its coal shipment (estimated) tor the week ending March 29. was 100,000 tons, of wbich 7.000 tons were sent to Port Richmond and 16,000 tons were sent to Port Liberty. Honse HHiiters Slake a Fnrions Onslaught at the Very Last Minute. THE OUTLOOK FOR THE SPRING TRADE iA transaction in real estate of more than usual significance was concluded yesterday. It was tlie sale of a lot on Fifth avenue, near "Wilkins, consisting it about one-sixth of an acre, for $8,000, or at the rate of $48, 000 an acre. This is believed to be the high est price ever paid for property in the East End. The purchaser will improve it this season. The deal was conducted by W. A. Herron & Sons. During the month ended yesterday Henry A. Weaver & Co. placed mortgages, aggre gating in- amount $78,000. One was for $20,000 on Second avenue property at 5 3-10 per cent net; one for $1G,000 on Fourth ave nno at 4, and others in amounts from S8,000 to S2,000- Nearly all of this money was borne capital. Toward the close of tne month Samuel W. Black fc Co. placed a mortgage for $25,000 on Fourth ward, Allegheny property. This was the largest deal of the kind reported. It is a recognized trait of human nature to put off everything until the lastminute. 0'bere are exceptions, but they only prove the rule. The number of house-hunters out yesterday was astonishing. Tbey had pnt off the disa greeable duty as long as possible, and then, be coming desperate, made a grand rush. They wanted all classes ot houses, lrom So a month up to several thousand. Nightleft the demand largely unsatisfied. Messrs. Black & Baird said after business hours that they had rented more houses during the day tban on any other single day since the middle or March. It is doubtful if all tbe people who put off renting until the twelfth honr will be able to find places. Some of them do not know where they will lodge to night Messrs. W. A. Herron A Sons, Baxter, Thompson fc Co., C. H. Love and others, re ported a similar condition of affairs. Moving is disagreeable enough without un necessarily delaying the important Item of securing a place to moro into. The experience of a good many people to-day may teach them a salutary lesson. The opening of the spring season finds all of the great industries of Pittsburg in active operation after a winter of unexampled pros perity. There are no signs of a lull. Business has been so adjusted to tbe change of season that the crossing of the dividing line the Rubicon of the year will occasion neither ar nor break. Frequent allusions have been made to the prosperous condition of Pittsburg, but, as the Queen of Sbeba said to Solomon, "tbe half nas not been told." A tour of the city and sub urbsan inspection of the mills, workshops, stores and other centers of activity a glance at the blocks and rows of handsome buildings jnst completed or in course or construction f nrnlshes evidence of thrift as conclnsive as it is gratifying. There is not a weak spot in the business situation. And so Pittsburg enters upon the spring season of 1890 with everything favorable to continued prosperity. LOCAL SECURITIES. FIGURES FOR MARCH. Tbe Bank Exchnnses Show a Big Gain Over Lam Yrnr. The Clearing House report for March, as given out by Manager Chaplin yesterday, shows a gain closely approximating 510,000,000 over the corresponding month last year, and, for the quarter, of nearly $J4,000,000 over the same period in 18S9. This shows a healthy and progressive condition of business. There was scarcely enough business at the petroleum Exchange yesterday to make a mar ket,, which was weak, dull and featureless throughout. Very little oil was handled, prob ably not exceeding 30,000 barrels. Tbere was some tendency to even up the month and shift the option to May, but actuaKrausactions were few and far between. The highest figure was recorded soon after the opening, due to light covering of shorts, but after that there was no support, and the market gradually weakened and closed tame at the lowest point of tbe dav. A meeting of the conference committees of the various exchanges has been called at New York on April 9 to consider the proposed change in the rules and such other business as may demsnd attention. Bulls are receiving some encouragement by tho falling off of new production, especially during the latter part of the month just ended. Most of the old wells are holding their own. Griffith's Wildwood well has been agitated again, with the result of increaslne its pro duction to 35 barrels an hour, but this rate is not maintained steadily as the well is bothered a great deal by paraffine. Its daily production will average about 500 barrels. The Tate well, in the Chartiers Valley field, has not turned out the gusher that was expect ed by the owners. It will make about a 35-bar-rel producer. The old Arbuckle No. 1 is still producing 130 barrel i a day. and during March lis output amounted to 6.000 barrels. The Raccoon Oil Company's Ferguson No. 5, in the Sbannopin field, is making 700 barrels a day, and Finegan, Downing & Co.'s No. 5, on the same farm, is doing 300 barrels a day. The well on Judce Over's farm, at Havsville, which came in a few days ago. has been shot and is producing 25 barrels a day. Fentnres of Yentcrdnv'a Oil Market. Corrected dally by John M. A WET BLANKET Still Stretched Over Wall Street Another Remnrknbly DnII Day In bprcnlntlon No Striking Fentnres nnd Few Price Chitnffes. New Yohk, March 31. The stock market to day was the dullest for years, and although the prevalence of the general opinion that there will bo no April money scare this year bad the effect of making the market firm; tbere was no feature in the dealings outside of special move ments m two or three stocks. The late talk about reduction in coal price" affected the Coal stocks to some extent, and Lackawanna and Jersey Central responded. A material recov ery in Jersey Central ocenrred after the dec laration of the regular dividend of K percent, but the movement lacked vim, and the stock became stagnant with the remainder of the list later. The death of David Dows Iras tbe occasion of the revival of the stories that his Bock Island stock wonld come upon the market, but the influence of these stories was extremely small. Tennessee Coal showed marked weak ness in the early trading, when the only active movement of the day occurred, and sold down to 4 against 49J. but later recovered to 49X. The low priced shares were utterly barren of feature. Tbe decision In the Morris and Essex tax case was used against Lackawanna, and the traders rolled it for a turn in the early morn ing, but tbese operations soon ended and the usual stagnation occurred. The general list under the execution of tho orders accumulated over Sunday displayed considerable firmness and slight advances were scored, which were not wiped out, and the close, while intensely dull, was steady at slight gains over Saturday's figures. The only move ment of importance in tbe final figures is a loss of 1 per cent in Jersey Central. Railroad bonds were more active than stocks, the dealings in all issues footing up $963,009. Erie seconds again come into prominence, and $218,000 of them changed bands without chang ing their final qudtalion at all. The same apathy was shown in bonds, however, and the fluctuations were almost in all cases insignifi cant. Peoria, Decatur and Evansvllle seconds rose 2, to 72, while tbe only decline of note was 2K per cent in'Big Sandy 6s, to 93 The Post sas: "Concurrent with the selling of Jersey Central, which was rather heavy for that stock, there were reports from Philadel phia in regard to some move soon to be made by tbe anti-Corbin party, which. It was Inti mated, might result in a separation of tbe Reading from the Jersey Central, thereby im pairing tbo value of the terminal property of the latter in Jersey City by depriving it of the Reading business. Such stories are, however, easy to concoct, and tbis one may have been made up for tbe purpose of depressing Jersey Central and punishing tbo Corbln party, who are heavy holders of the stock." Checks to the amount of $5,296,376 for April interest on the registered 4 per cents were mailed at Washington to-day, and as a large amount of railroad and other corporate inter ests will rome out to-morrow it is expected that money will be more abundant.
