    THE PITTSBURG DISPATCH, SUNDAY, MARCH
"FIGHTIKG FIR AN ISLAND.
Remonstrance Against the Grnntlnc of a.
Charter A Land Company Contel!nr
the Rlchts of a ITnicr Compnnj The
Ncvlllf Island Sqnnbblr.
Application was recently made at Har
risrjurg for a charter for the Seville Island
"Water Company, to operate in Seville
Island in the Ohio rircr. Among the ap
plicants are John II. Dalzell, T. B. Atter
bury and Alexander W. "Watson.
Yesterday afternoon a number of owners
of property on the island, who are opposed
to the ne company, held a meeting at the
office of B. C. Christy and formulated a
remonstrance against the granting of a
charter. In the application for a charter it
is stated that charters have been taken out
lor a railro3 J and an electric railroad, that
building lots are being sold, and that the
island promises soon to contain a large
population, for which water service will be
badlv needed.
The remonstrants, who favor the corpora
tion called the Seville Island Land Com
pany, and teem to look upon the proposed
water company as a Trojan horse, which,
once given a looting in the island, will de
velop into all sorts of dangerous schemes,
deny that a charter has been taken oat lor
a railroad, or that any building lots have
been sold. They deny that there is any im
mediate prospect of necessity for water
service.
Attorneys B. C. Christy and E. A. Mon
tooth have been retained by the remonstrants
in other words, the HeVille Island Land
Companv and will contest the issuance of
a charter to the Seville Island Water Com
pany. UTILIZATION OP SLAG.
It Slakes Good Pavlns Material. Excellent
Cement nod Fine Wool.
Newcastle, Enjr.( Chronlcle.3
Though slags from various ores differ ma
terially in their composition, that from the
same class of ores is wonderfully uniform.
Analysis of slag from black-band Scotch
ironstone, made during the past two
years, show in 53 tests a range of
less than 4 per cent in the silica, and
the extreme variation in the bases lime
and alumina was less than per cent
over the two years. In some analyses of
Cleveland slag extending over ten years,
these differences are even smaller than those
just given. The chemical composition of
Middlesborough slag is lime 32.75, silica
30.00, alumina 28 00, iron 0.75, magnesia
5.25, sulphide of lime 1.90, manganese 0.60
and residue 0.75.
Besides Toad making, to which ii has long
been applied in the iron making districts,
it has been found a capital substitute for
granite in paving. Cast into square blocks,
it is also ot great value for building river
side walls; while ground and finelv divided
it makes a capital cement, when mixed with
25 per cent of hydrated lime. The basic
slag from the Thomas-Gilchrist process of
steel making also yields a valuable manure
for certain lands; while in the form of "slag
wood," or "silicate cotton." it may be em
ployed for a very large number of purposes.
FOUR YEARS IN EXILE.
Wrecked Seamen Who Made Finn Hook of
the Works of n Watch.
Dispatches from Vancouver Island state
that tbree Englishmen were landed there on
February 5 from the uninhabited island of
San Allesandrc, where they bad been for
four years. In October, 1885, they took
passage on the Japanese vessel JIatsuo
Marie at Hakobutt from Amomari, and
wbile crossing the Straits of Issugaru a gale
was encountered which blew them ashore on
the island oi Allesandro, and five of the crew
drowned.
The three castawavs remained on the
island, and lived chiefly on fruit and some
sea birds. They also caught fish with hooks
made out of part of the works of a watch.
They suffered considerable privations,
especially from want of clothing, and had
all riven way to despair when the Wanderer
rescued them During their stay on the
island several vessels passed, but not suf
ficiently near to observe their signals. The
men when rescued presented quite a wild
appearance.
