THE FTTTSBUEG DISPATCH, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 19, 1890.
THE HUNS NOT IN IT.
Consul Schaml)err Secures the Book
ing of the bteamer Eider.
OXLT FORTT-SEYEN HDNGAEIAKS.
riltslurff Coal Operators Watching the
Hocking; Valley Men.
PLASTEREBS VOTE OS INSURANCE.
Max Schaumberg, the Austrian Consul,
of lhis city, yesterday called upon John
Flannery in relation to the latter's inter
view published in yesterday's DISPATCH
regarding the alleged importation of 600
Hungarians into this city. Mr. Flanncry
stated that the Hungarians had as much
right in this country as any other class of
foreigners, but did not believe that any were
brought in under contract to do work. It is
so unusual ior an American to put in a good
word for the "Huns" that the Consul called
and thanked Mr. Plannery in the name of
the Austro-Hungarian Government.
HOT SO MANY HUNS.
.Mr. Schaumberg had with him the official
documents backing ud the statements in
The Disfatch of yesterday to the effect
that there had not been any "Huns" im
ported, and that the report was sent out on
account of the quarrel between the repre
sentatives of the Federal Government and
the State commissioners at Castle Garden.
He had the booking of the steamship Eider,
which is the vessel the supposed GOO "Huns"
came over in. In the steerage were the
names and nationalities of every passenger
on the trip. There were 243 altogether.
Twenty-five ol them were from Austria and
22 from Hungary. This is 47 "Huns" al
together out of a" total of 243 passengers on
the vessel. Included in the list of those
from Austria are a number of Bohemians.
Mr. Schaumberg stated that tie had men
at theJJninn station awaiting the arrival of
the Pittsburg passengers. Out of the 243
on board the boat, only 21 of them had tick
ets for Pittsburg. Thes'ewere not all "Huns"
either, but came from nil parts of Europe.
DOESN'T LIKE IT AT ALL.
Mr. Schaumberg is verT much displeased
at the published reports of a local paper
which he says is maligning the Hungarian
people. He says bis government is doing
everything they can to discourage emigra
tion. Last week abont 20 persons were im
prisoned in jail lor from one to six years, in
Wadowice, for agitating the subject. He
also says it is a well-known fact that the
"Huns" do not "blacksbeep" where there
is a strike. The only time they take the
place of a striker is when they do it through
gnorance. He points to the strikes in the
coke country and in this county, and in
every case the "Huns," although not or
ganized, were the last to go to work while
the strike was in progress.
COAL OPERATORS KICK.
The Boekloc Vnllry Men Want a Differen
tial Ume of 15 Cents.
A meeting of the Pittsburg Railroad Coal
Association was held vesterday and reports
received from the meeting in Cleveland on
Monday. Messrs. De Armi Dempster,
Sunford, Andrews and Treadling returned
home from the meeting in the morning.
They stated that the railroad officers defer
red action upon the Hocking Valley matter
until next Tuesday, when another meeting
will be held in Columbus.
The operators in the Hocking Valley want
a differential rate of 15 cents per ton, or in
other words, they wish a rate from their
mines to the lakes 15 cents less than from
this city to lbp same ports. They say their
coal is of nn inferior quality, and conse
quently they cannot get as high a price as
the Pittsburg operators. To enable them to
compete they ask a lower differential rate
than hy$ cents, which they are allowed at
present.
The railroads claim they can not reduce
the rates as they have to haul the coal 40
miles farther than they transport the Pitts
burg product. They also say the rates of
mining are lower in the valley than in this
city and the fact that their coal is inferior
does not concern the railroad companies.
After May 1, the operators say the differ
ence in the price of mining will be 10 cents
per ton. It tbey had a differential rate of
15 cents tbey could make the selling price
of the coal 25 cents cheaper and would then
be enabled to compete with the Pittsburg
operators. Nothing was done about the
40 mile radius matter.
TOTING ON INSURANCE.
The Local Plasterers Discuss lbs Blatter
and Seal tbe Dallot Bos.
A special meeting of the Journeymen
Plasterers' Association Ko. 31 was held last
evening, for the purpose of taking a vote
upon the insurance clause of '' association.
At the last convention a rc-nlution was
adopted to submit the matter to all the
locals.
In each local there is an insurance fund.
It has always been a question for discussion
whether a member when he draws his card
does not forfeit all right to tbe local insur
ance benefit. Some say yes, and others say
no. It has never been decided by
a court of justice, but whether or
not, no such question can arise
in reference to the national idea.
Its meaning is plain. President Tenary, of
the International Association says: Being
transferred from one local to another docs
not deprive a member of his right to benefit
so long as he keeps clear on the books and
obeys the international and subordinate
laws of the local, under whose jurisdiction
he may be working at tbo time of his
death.
The vote will be sealed and sent to Gen
eral Secretary McDonnell. The result will
be made public ia the latter's next quarterly
report.
THE IMPORTS INCREASING.
English Mnnnfncturern Sending Over Itlc.ro
Tin Plales Each Year.
Assistant Secretary Luty.of the American
Tinned Plate Association, yesterday received
a letter from the Treasury Department in
regard to the iron and steel import, during
the months of January, 18D0 and 18S9. For
the present year the valuition of the prod
ucts was $3,279,944. For the same month
of the Dreceedinz vear thev were 53,486,866,
or a decrease of S206.91G.
The above amount includes the importa
tion ol tin plates, which in Januarv, 1889,
was 51,568,773, against ?1.722,7oG in 1890, or
an increase of over $153,000. "While the
total imports of iron and steel is being re
duced, tbe importation ot tin plates is in
creasing. The importation of tin plates is
more than one-half of the total importation
of iron and steel products.
AFTER NON-UNION PRINTERS.
Allechcny Conncllmen to bo Denounced for
Pnlronlzlns Them.
A number of union job printers are up in
arms against the Printing Committee of
Allegheny Councils. The committee award
ed to Peck & Co. the contract for printing
some tabulated reports. The firm is said to
be lukewarm on unionism, and, having the
work done by boys, they underbid other
competitors.
Calvin Wyatt, stated yesterday that the
two printers' organizations would take, some
action on the matter, and find out why the
contract was not given to a good union con
cern. '
Mlco Sheet Mill Closed.
Thesbeet mill at Sligo has been shut
down." The cause of the stoppage is said to
be alack of orders. It is not known when
the mill will resume work.
MINERS WANT A CHANGE.
The Panhandle and Chartlers Men May Call
n Convention Soon.
The following special was received last
night from Mansfield:
"A meeting of the coal miners of the Pan
handle, Chartiers Valley and Tom's Run
will be called soon to consider the advisa
bility of asking for a change in the scale of
wages. The mines in this vicinity are
nearly all running steadily, but any strike
would close them all, as owners complain of
low prices now.
Pcpalnr Favor.
How to win the favor and patronage of
the public is one of the most difficult ques
tions that dealers and manufacturers have
to contend with. There is one and but one
sure way in which it can be done and that
is to supply better and more reliable goods
than can be obtained elsewhere and let the
people Know it. That is the plan adopted
by a prominent "Western manufacturer, and
as will be seen by the following letter, it has
won the day in this vicinity. The letter is
as follows:
Allegheny Citt, Feb. 26, 1890.
Messrs. Chamberlain . Co., Des Moines, la.:
Gentlemen On Nov. 1. 1890, we re
ceived our first order ot six dozen Chamber
lain's Cough Remedy. The first five weeks
the sales were slow, but finally we began to
have calls for it. The sales steadily in
creased until the early part of January,
when we ordered 13 dozen more, which
lasted our trade only about three weeks,
when we made our third order lor one gross.
Of course the first sales were made entirely
Irom the advertising, but to-day we can say,
unhesitatingly, that fully two-thirds of our
sales are made on merit, through the recom
mendations of others, one lady in particular
saying, after having bought the fifth bottle,
that that one would be the last, as she bad
cured her own family, and it did them so
much good that the neighbors wanted her to
enre their families. Numerous other similar
statements could be quoted, but our own
statement, that the sales of Chamberlain's
Cough Remedy exceeds that of any other
two preparations we have in stock, and can
truthfully say that the greater number of
sales are from merit alone, will cover it all.
Very respectfully yonrs,
