,EBE PITTSBURG DISPATCH,
..TAY, MARCH 4, 1890.
THE ATTACK FOR LICENSES.
An Ominous Quiet In the Cnmp of the Ee
monstranu Only ItlcKeeiport nnd the
Nineteenth Ward Heard From.
A Tery pious, and at the same time a very
lazy man piety and laziness being some
times united in the same character, strange
-v s it may seem is said to hare written out
a very ample and well-composed prayer,
had it framed and hung over the footboard
of his bed. Then, when feeling unusually
sleepy, or when the air was chilly, he would
point to the engrossed copy, on retiring,
and address the Throne of Grace thus:
"Those, Lord, are my sentiments."
Whether the temperance people of this
county think they have sufficiently borne
testimony, have fought the good fight,
and have made their calling and election
sure, or are lying in ambush with intent to
throw would-be booze dispensers off their
guard and take them napping, is not dis
closed by any general movement, so far on
record in the Clerk of Courts' office. Sirs.
McConnell, of McKeesport, has been down,
and has secured a list of names of appli
cants for license from that city, supposedly
with intent to strew thorns in their path.
Remonstrances have also been filed against
H. B. Luchsinger, McDowell and Frank
Gaao, or the Nineteenth ward, but so far as
officially Known these are the only objec
tions recorded.
Philadelphia Judges begin the work
earlier than their brethren in this county,
and here is one of the nuts the anti-whisky
people have offered Their Honors to crack.
Psalm xciv.iO: "Shall the throne of
iniquity have fellowship with thee, which
iramelh mischiel by a law?" They are also
informed thjt if they grant licenses to sell
liquor they are no better than Pontius
Pilate, whom they hold to be justly charge
able with crime o'f the crucifixion of the
Savior, as it was by his (Pilate's) permis
sion that it was done.
As wholesalers may, under the law, fur
nish their customers with glasses so that
they cau divide a quart pro rata, where peo
ple are neighborly and democratic and gen
t rally get thirsty about the same time,
enough of them at least to get away with a
quart of coffin varnish, the deprivation of
s.iloo-is is not felt so badly as it was before
they knew their precise latitude and longi
tude. The circus will begin on St Patrick's
Day; at least, it is expected t commence
b'oie noon of that day.
Great Crowds.
On yesterday morning about 10 o'clock, a
large crowd of people were noticed about
the entrance to building No. 51G Smithfield
St., occupied by the well-known china and
art goods dealers, French, Kendrick & Co.,
the cause of which was from the announce
ment of their removal sale and the great
bargains-advertised in consequence.
Several times during tee day it was
found necessary to close the doors to give
the throng of people on every floor an op
portunity to make their purchases.
Extra help had been engaged in anticipa
tion of a large crowd, bnt not enough, how
ever, to handle the crowds that came. More
help has been engaged for the remainder of
the sale, and all may be sure of prompt at
tention. To customers who bought goods to
be sent, we would say that they will be de
livered as promised. An extra force of
packers are working night and day. All
those who may be desirous of securing any
of the great bargains now being offered
must come early, as the quantity is limited,
and will soon be gone. Don't wait, but
come as soon as you read this, and get your
share of the good things at French, Ken
drick & Co.'s China Store, 51G Smithfield
St., opp. City Hall.
Their Fir it Breakfast.
a Mr Justwed -"Why, my dear, I didn't
.know you were such a famous little baker.
This bread is simply superb.
Mrs. Justwed O, I that is I'm glad
you like it, darling.
She was just on the point of telling him
that her own attempts at baking had been
signal failures, and that at the last moment
she had sent out for a couple of Marvin's
delightful Boyal loaves, and he, simple con
fiding man, thinks to-day that she's the best
baker in seven counties. ttssu
