THE PITTSBURG DISPATCH, TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 189a
W B. & 0. PUSHING.
Aharter Taken Out for a Road From
'Akron lo Chicago Junction.
A'SHORT LINE TO THE WIHDY CITY.
i
Hay fce a Blnff to Force Extension of the
Cleveland and Western.
ONE OF THOMAS SI. KIXG'S PET HOBBIES
Vice President Thomas M. King always
had a hobby to bnild a road from Akron to
Chicago Junction. "When the Valler road
was pmchased by the Baltimore and Ohio,
Mr. King had in view his pet scheme. It
looks now as if his plans will be material
ized. A few days ago, at Columbus, the Akron
and Chicago Junction Railroad Company
was incorporated. The incorporators are
officials of the Valley road, J. B. Caven,
General Passenger and Freight Agent; Gen
eral Superintendent J. T. Johnston; Gen
eral Agent Thornburg, and M."K. Dickey
and E. J. Estep. General Counsel. Messrs.
Caven and Johnston formerly lived in Pitts
bun:, and are well known here.
The Incorporation of this company meant
the immediate construction of a line from
Akron to Chicago Junction. It will doubt
less be built on what is known as the Ag
new route, welch was surveyed several years
ajo.
IT 'TCTLI, BE PUSHED.
General Agent Thornburg will bare charge
of tbe work, and it will be finished this year.
The length of the line will be 6S miles, matin?
the presentronte from Pittsburg to Chicago, by
way of the P. fc W. and B. fc 0. much shorter.
The distance at present from Akron to Chicago
Junction, over ibe Wheeling and Lake Erie
and a email branch of the 13. A O is 95 miles.
The Cleveland and Western road from
Delphos to Carey, a distance of 56 miles, is
owned by William Bern pie. Jr. and James D.
Callerv. It connects at Delphos with the Pitts
burg, Toledo and Kansas City road, making a
through line to St. Louis. To make the Cleve
land and Western efficient it must be extended
to Akron, where it would connect with the
Pittsburg and Western. The road was bought
by Messrs. Callerv and Semple for speculative
purposes, and they are willing to sell to the
highest bidder. It Is claimed that both the
Baltimore and Ohio and Pittsburg and Western
are after the road, when the fact li that it
doesn't make much difference to the other
which one buys. In either case the road would
have to be extended to Akron to make it valua
ble, and then it would give the Pittsburg and
Western a through short line from Pittsburg to
St. Louis.
Some local railroad men think that the
scheme of the B. & O. to build a road from
Akron to Chicago Jnnction is only a bluS to
scare Messrs. Semple and Callery into making
the desired extension. As these men are
friendly to the P. t V the latter people think
they can make first-lass traffic arrangements
with the new road.
KNOWS MAUGHT OF IT.
When James D. Callery was asked yesterday
If the .AO. bad made overtures for his
road be declined to answer the question. He
said be didn't know anything aoont an alleged
conference "held at the Duquesno Clun. He
had heard that the B. & O. intended to build a
line from Akron to Chicago Jnnction, but he
didn't know anything further about it.
Charles O. Scull, general passenger agent of
theB. & O. Railroad, was in the city yesterday
on bis way to Cincinnati to attend a meeting of
the beads of passenger departments of the dif
ferent railroads, to arrange tourists' rates for
next summer.
Mr. Scull, when questioned about the deal
now pending between the EiO. and P. & W.
roads, said he knew nothing about it, but if the
latter road did pass into the possession of the
line be represents, he thought it would be to
the benefit of the P. fc W. as well as to the
shippers or this city. In regard to the meeting
between the representatives of the two lines in
the Uuquesne Club on Saturday, he said about
three-fourths of the stuff was incorrect. He
says they have a throueh line now from Chi
cago to the seaboard, and the acquisition in
this respect would be of little benefit to them.
A GREAT BENEFIT.
The greatest benefit to be derived from an ar
rangement between the two roads would be the
shortening of the distance between; Pittsburg
and the Baltimore and Ohio's Western ter
minals. It would give them a more direct
route to Chicago and the lakes from this city.
It would shorten the distance over the Balti
more and Ohio to Chicago about 65 or 70 miles.
They woula go over the Pittsburg and Western
to Akron, from there they would go over the
new line now being built by M esrs. Semple and
Callery from Akron to Chicago Junction.
From the latter point they will Ube their own
line into Chicago. This route would be practi
cally a low grade road, and would be as short as
the Fort Wayne.
Mr. Scull was asked what they proposed to do
in regard to the Second Avenue Electric Street
Hallway, taking away their suburban business
between Glenwood and this city. He said:
"We do not propose to do anything: If the
Street Hallway Company takes the business,
let them. We cannot do anything to prevent
them. It would not nay us to put on a fast
train service, and if we tried to do it the ex
pense would be more than the revenue. In
every city where a cable or electric line has
paralleled a railroad the latter has suffered.
Do what we would we could not hold the busi
ness." A GIKL IS BOI'S CLOTHING.
How a Utile Franklin Brunette Kevenled
Her Kenl Identity.
There is an odd story connected with Annie
Fisher, the young girl who was removed to the
"West Penn Hospital in an unconscious condi
tion yesterday afternoon. The girl is a pretty
little brunette about 17 years of age. She came
here from Franklin, Pa., where she said she
had been ill-treated by her father. Her mother
died several years ago.
When she came to this city she was dressed
In boy's clothing. She obtained a place with a
family on Butler street. The lady of the house
set her to washing dishes one day and it was
while she was engaged at this that her identity
was discovered through the peculiar manner in
which she wrung the dish cloths. She is still
In the West Penn Hospital. The physicians
uSay she feigned unLonsciousness for seven
hours.

A Strong Belief That tbe Great Chicago
Batchers Will Come to Plitsbonc Six
' nlflcnnt Movement at East Liberty
Ice.3InU.lng n Possibility.
Armour Brothers, of Chicago, are re
ported to" have purchased Hayborn row, at
the East Liberty stockyards, and Beckett's
brickyard, between Dallas aud Torrens sta
tions. The purchases are said to be made
with intent to build a large abattoir and
ice and packing house. It is thought they
will also make ice for themselves. The
work of tearing down bouses and sheds has
been commenced, and the buildings are ex
pected to be completed by July L
This will make thincs lively In the vicinity of
the stock yards and will probably bring shekels
to the commission dealers, but it doesn't make
It appear as though the stock yards were to be
moved sevsral miles out the road as once
talked.
At the outset, when a tour of Inquiry was
made, the report seemed quite gauzy. About
tbe Cast End Hotel there had been talk heard
but no one spoken to professed to have any
definite knowledge. Inquiry was made
or E. McCall t Co., but the
man in the office said he hadn't
beam anything about it. Mr. James Longbry
was tbe first man fnnnd who seemed to have
anv definite knowledge of the matter. He said
hehad beard so much of it that he supposed it
was true, and tbe fact that tbe tenants of the
row in question had been notified to vacate
seemed like pretty good evidence that some
thing was in tbe wind. The row in question, or
at least a part of it, was once a church, which
was reconstructed.
Some say it was given out some time ago that
the Pennsylvania Railway Company wanted to
use the ground, and hence the notice to the ten
ants to quit, but, said one man. There is
something afoot, and I shouldn't wonder if the
Armours are interested. It might be a good
thing, perhaps, for the railway company."
For some reason or other there was a caver
nous vagueness about the whole matter that
was bard to understand, for if the Pennsyl
vania Railroad Company and the Armours want
to start au abattoir on the property of tbe
former it isn't likely any power strong enough
to say them'Tiay" will interfere, provided no
nuisance is committed. There was consider
able hog killing done in this city at one time,
but tbat was before the business was concen
trated at a few points in the West.
BEARING GOOD FRUIT.
Fruitful Rrsult of tbe Sonthside Hospital's
Committee Work The Merits or the
Institution Acknowledged by Liberal
Contributions The Donors.
The Sonthside Hospital is in a fair way
toward having all the financial backing it
wants, the circulars sent out by gentlemen
interested in that institution having been
productive of the very best results. It was
about the first of January that the circulars
were mailed to all the business firms on that
side of the river, and the appeal was made
known to thousands of men employed in the
various mills and factories over there. Every
body became interested, not only the manufact
urer and business man, but the mechanic and
professional man, churches, schools and society
organizations.
Contributions have been coming in from time
to time, and hereafter, now tbat the work has
been started, a collector in the person of Mr.
Gordon Stewart will canvass the entire Soutn
side district, making daily calls on everybody
for the purpose of receiving what they have se
cured from either employes or friends for the
object in view. Up to yesterday Mr. Stewart
had received $S23 SO, all contributed since

MRS. DEYISXErS STORY.
Sbe Ha Letters to Show That Her Hus
band Was Not a Robber.
Mrs. AM. Devlnney. wife of G. W. Devln
ney, of Edeewood, who was shot at Crestline,
O., Sunday night of last week, called at The
Dispatch office yesterday for the purpose of
making a statement in regard to the shooting
of her husband. She had letters with her,
written by ber husband. The latter told
her what he intended to do. One
of the letters is dated Cresline, the
day he was shot. He said he
would not put up" at a hotel, as he could live
considerably cheaper on the outskirts of tbe
town, buying his meal, from farmers. He was
short of money at the time, and his wife sup
poses that he entered Farmer Pringle's yard
with the intention of asking for his supper,
when he was shot. Mrs. Devinuey says tbe mar
shal of the town tola her the farmer had been
visited by burglars the night before, and sbe
supposes tbat Pringle shot her husband without
taking time to think whether he was a burglar
or not.
Mrs. Devlnney also had letters from her hus
band's employers, in which tbey speak very
highly of him and say be was an honest man.
One of them is from w. W. Reed, manager of
Frank Speer's lumber j ard in the East End.
Mr. Devinney also worked for tbe Pennsyl
vania Railroad in the Twenty-eighth street
yard, and was always spoken of as being indus
trious and sober. Mrs. Devinney says if she
bad any money she wonld push the case
against the man who shot ber husband.

Stockholders Adopt Precautionary Measures
for the Future.
KEDDCTI05 IK THE CAPITAL BTOCK
The stockholders of the Chartiers Valley
Gas Company held an important meeting at
their office, corner of Fourth avenue and
Wood street, yesterday afternoon. It wag a
special meeting called for the purpose ot
hearing the report of the auditing commit
tee. At the anntial meeting held a few
weeks ago the reports of the officers failed to
fully satisfy the stockholders. "William B.
Scaife raised a question on the purchase of
about 1,000 shares of stock at a price largely
iu advance ot the market. Neither Presi
dent Chambers nor Secretary Tener could
explain the matter satisfactorily, and the
auditing committee was instructed to ex
amine the books of the company aud pre
pare a detailed statement of receipts and ex
penditures. This committee consisted of James Camp
bell, Charles O. Smith and C. P. Klopfer.
It seems, however, that the stockholders
were dissatisfied with tbe prospects of an
accurate report, and a petitiou was quietly cir
culated among them, asking the directors to
increase the committee. But before the pe
titiou was presented, the directors heard of the
movement and added the names of Robert
Wardrop and Charles H. Scott.
INTENSE INTEREST IN IT.
The attendance at yesterday's meeting was
larger tban at tbe annual meeting, more than
100 stockholders being present. There was in
tense interest manifested in the proceedings.
It bad been reported in the morning that if the
Auditing Committee would prove incapable of
straightening matters out to tbe entire satis
faction of everyone, an effort wonld be made
to bring an end to the arrangement with the
Philadelphia Company, and to repudiate the
bond issues.
Mr. Scott, of the committee, read the report.
It was to the effect that tbe whole trouble
originated through an old obligation of the
company. A sale of 1,400 shares of stock bad
been made to the agents and the money was
received for tbe stock, with the explicit un
derstanding that the agents were to be pro
tected in their effort to resell. The agents
found that there was 1,016 shares they could
not sell and the project was given up. This
stock was returned to the company when tbe
market was over $80. That was in 1888, but the
company only paid off the money in 1889. That
explains why the stock cost the company 153 in
lbSS, when the market was but 53 in 15i9.
The report was accepted unanimously. A
recommendation of the committee that the
10.000 shares of treasury stock be retired, was
also adopted. This reduces the capital stock
orthe company to S3.0O0.00O instead of $4.000,.
000, as heretofore. The lesser amount only
will be subject to dividends in the future. The
Btoccnoiuers iook precautionary steps to avoia
any entanglements in the future by requesting
the directors to give quarterly statements of
the receipts and expenditures of tbe company
in the luture. Tbey desire to know more fre
quently what the company is doing.
MORE ECONOMY.
Another economical measure has been
adopted. John H. Dalzell, who formerly was
the treasurer of tbe company, has retired. The
offices of the secretary and treasurer have
been merged Into one, aud F. J. Tener, the
former secretary, elected to the position. Mr.
Dalzell is still a member of the board of di
rectors. The stockholders of the company wbo were
so disheartened at not receiving a dividend in
January naturally felt very mnch encouraged
after yesterday's meeting. It was reported that
tbe receipts for January will be about $12,000
in excess of January of last year, and Presi
dent Chambers stated that tbe prospects for a
dividend in April are very good, and if the re
ceipts continue as at present he assured tbe
stockholders he would advocate a dividend at
that time.
