Mexican Central, two pumpers were killed.

The Congo Free State has empowered the
Brussels Anti-Slavery Society to send an ex
pedition to Africa to aid in suppressing the
slave trade.
A boiler exploded yesterday moraine in the
sawmill of James Hunter, at Rutherclen, Car
olina county, Va, killing three people and
wounding six.
Cashier Bard's shortage amounts to about
$42,000. The stockholders of the Lincoln Bank
will hold a meeting at once to decide upon their
future course.
The French Senate, by a rote of ITS to 107,
has passed the bill providing for snmmary pro
ceeding against newspapers publishing libels ou
Government officials.
R. H. Cnlpepper. a member of one of the
largest grocery and cotton houses in Texas,
suicided by shooting himself ou Thursday at
his home in Houston.
A branch of the Non-Partlsan Woman's
Christian Temperance Union, of which Mrs. J,
Ellen Foster, of Iowa, is the recognized leader,
has been formed in Chicago.
Dick Hawes, the wife and child murderer
who will be hanged next Friday in Birming
ham, Ala has made a third confession, and
thisis believed to be the true one.
The arc andincandescentlight plant owned
by Farwell & Munn, at Freeport, D.L, was de
stroyed by fire at an early hour yesterday morn
ing. Loss $25,000; insurance $3,000.
Advices from Wood river. Montana, state
that cattle and horses are aymg in large num
bers in that section. Many bands will be wiped
out entirely unless a thaw comes soon.
The grand jurv at Lafayette, Ind, returned
indictments against 21 persons, all charged with
conspiracy In connection with their acts as reg
ulators. The parties will be allowed ball.
A boat with six of the crew of the British
ship Sovereign, from Cardiff for Montevideo,
which was sunk by a collision with the steamer
Highgate off Lundy Island, is still missing.
The China Courier (FBaiphona chronicles
the assassination of three Europeans, M. d'Ar
gencie, his wife and their son. Their bodies
were found in a house thattbey had been occu
pying. At Dublin Father Kinsella has been sen
tenced to two months' imprisonment with
hard labor, tor connection with the recent
resistance to evictions from the Clangory
estate.
Pension Agent Ensley has sent to Charles
Flaherty. Terre Haute, gnardian of Owen Fla
herty, a draft for 513,079. The beneficiary came
ont of the service at the close of the war hope
lessly insane.

of Dr. Melvti Fosdick. near Kalamazoo,
illch.. is that the shots wtre not Intended for
the doctor, but for Albert Fosdrick himself, the
alleged assassin.
Almost complete returns from the election
for Nobles and Representatives held in, the
Hawaiian KingdomTebruary S indicate that
the Reform party will have a small majority in
the next Legislature.
At Baltimore the Johns Hopkins University
celebrated its fourteenth anniversary yesterday.
The public exercises were held in the Mt Ver
non Place M. E. Church. Acting President
Bemsen presided and made an address.
The jury in the Cronin jury bribing case
brought iu a verdict finding the only remain
ing defendant on trial, Jeremiah O'Donnell,
cnilty of the offense cbarged and fixing bis
punishment at three years in the penitentiary.
The President has approved the act for the
construction, of a bridge across the Missouri
river at or near Burlington, la., and the act for
the construction of a bridge over the Missouri
river In Douglass county. Mo., or in Sarpy
county, Neb.
It is reported that as soon as the lease is
signed whereby the Northern Pacific gains
control of "the Wisconsin Central, Mr. Villard
will commence operations to shorten the
length of the latter line from the twin cities to
Chicago by about 60 miles.
The jury in tne case of Frank Twombley
and Eduard La Cloege. engineer and fireman
respectively of a freight train which in Bep
timber last ran into a passenger train on the
Bock Island road near Chicago, causing the
loss of seven lives, brought in its verdict of
not guilty.
Samuel Belt and Oliver Lee have been ar
rested at Lebanon, Ind., on the strength of an
affidavit made by the divorced wife of Samuel
Belt, charging them with having attempted the
assassination of Mrs. Randall while a prayer
meeting was in progress at her residence, five
miles south of Lebanon.
At London the Court has cranted an in
junction against Miss Agnes Huntingdon, for
bidding ber to sing In or outside the United
Kingdom without the consent of the Carl Rosa
Opera Company. The J udge said he hoped the
litigants would arrange their trouble before
trial, as it was disadvantageous to managers,
actors and singers to parade their quarrels be
fore the public.

Settling the Capacity of a Carry The Town

carry to ascertain what it holds. The men
claim they hold 160 bushels when the fact
is' they only hold 150 bushels. It is re
liably" stated that the H. C. Frick Coke
Company has purchased the ML Braddock
farm of 1,000 acres, north of TJniontown.
.The National Pipe Foundry has resumed
operations.
-Since the proposition of the Scottdale
"Water Company to furnish the town with
water for 99 years at $2,200 per year has
been knocked out, and since the vote for or
against water tax was carried by about 200
majority at the last election for water tax,
there is positive assurance that the town
will be well supplied with water by next
winter.
