EPODOC1NG POWER OF THE LITEE
Reader of The Dispatch who desire
information on subjects relating to indus
trial deTelopment and progress in mechani
cal, civil and electrical engineering and the
sciences can have their queries answered
through this column.
A new calculating machine has been per
fected which is one oi the most valuable
contributions to mechanics that has ap
peared in recent years, and which may be
regarded as one or the mathematical won
ders of the age. It is a strongly-built ma
chine, occupying about the same space as
an ordinary typewriter, having a slightly
inclined keyboard, the keys of which are
operated in the same manner as those of a
typewriter. Each key has two figures, a
large and a small one, the large figures in
creasing consecutively from 1 to 9, and the
mall ones decreasing in the same manner.
Across the machine eight rows, or any num
ber, according to the sire of the machine,
represent arithmetical progression from
units up. In addition and subtraction the
operator strikes the keys with reference to
the large figures that is, in the same man
ner as though taking a dictation, and the
total of the several amounts appears on the
numeral wheels or register of the machine.
In multiplication, division and calcu
lations of a similar character,
the keys are struck with reference
to the small figures. Thus the comptometer
is so constructed that it not only performs
all computations in whole numbers and
decimal fractions, but in common fractions,
being equally accurate in discount, interest,
square root, exchange, and in all forms of
accountant work. The method of making
computations is very simple; in fact, a
novice will perform the most difficult divis
ion, discount and percentage problems in
half the time required by the old way,
while the typewriter operator requires but
little practice to attain great proficiency in
the use ot the machine. A combination
machine called the comptograph, which is
in course of manufacture, is constructed on
the same principle as the comptometer, but
possesses the additional feature of an in
genious mechanism, which keeps a record
of the work. This machine is specially
Bdapted for banks, railway and insurance
offices, and other calculations of which a
printed record is desired.
The Normal Diet.
Dr. G. Munro Smith, premising that he
does not consider moderate overeating in
jurious, says that a great many men eat to
excess, it being no uncommon thing for an
average-sized man, on very moderate work
to eat 25 or 27 ounces of chemically dry food
a day. "Women, as a rule, eat much less
than men, after making allowances for dif
ferences in weight and work. "Where a man
eats 19 ounces a woman of the same weight
and of active habits eats only 14 or 15
ounces. On a diet from which all meat is
excluded be has found that 12 or 13 ounces
per diem will comfortably feed a hard work
ing man. A moderate amountof stimulants
appears to increase the average; moderately
free drinking diminishes it. A diet of 1
part of nitrogenous to 7 or 8 non-nitrogenous
is a good combination; but it is greatly ex
ceeded on the nitrogenous side by nearly
every one, especially men in other words,
too much meat is eaten. A diet of 12 to 14
ounces of chemically dry food, digestible,
with the ingredients in proper proportion,
is sufficient to keep in good health an average-sized
man on moderate work. The ma
jority of people eat literally twice as much
as this.
Horseshoe Protector.
An ingenious little device has been
patented in England for the protection of
horses' feet, which is said to be not only
much neater but much more effectual than
the boots or rings hitherto used for that pur
pose. It consists of a molded piece of
rubber with a flange and a half round edge,
tapenngirom the toe ot the shoe to the heel,
which is nailed through between the irnn-
shoe and the hoof. The rubber fillet thus"
applied acts as a buffer, and prevents in
jury in the case ot horses that are prone to
cut one leg by the shoe of the other. It also
does away with the necessity ot rasping the
feet or drawing in the shoes, which causes
the feet to contract and often leads to lame
ness. It is a usefnl appliance for colts when
broken in to harness, as there is no danger
ot damaging their back sinews, as is now
often done when the use of certain kinds ef
boots is resorted to. It is further claimed
that it supplies a valuable addition in the
racing stable for horses in training, as it
prevents injury to the fetlock joint by tread
ing or striking.
Reproducing Power of (be Liver.
A scientific fact of great value, and one
which should bring comfort to legions of
that large class of people who are weary of
the caprices of an erratic or tardy liver, has
lately been established. Experiment has
proved that large portions of the liver can be
removed without serious disturbance to the
animal functions of the human body. The
explanation of this curious fact seems to be
that the liver has a wonderful power of re
production. Ponfick found tnat, within a
few days of the removal of portions of the
liver, the work of its reproduction began,
and that it proceeded with great rapidity to
completion. In certain cases he found that
within a period of a few weeks as much was
reproduced as had been removed, and this
amounted occasionally to twice as much as
had been left behind. These investigations
have an interest altogether outside of that
which is absolutely scientific, because they
cannot fail to influence the development of
abdominal surgery, if it is understood that
large portions of the liver may be removed
without serious danger to life.
Another New Sheep-Shearing Machine.
A rival to the now celebrated "Wolseley"
aheep-shearing machine has been tested in
Melbourne, Australia, with satisfactory re
sults. This machine is called the "Silver,"
and with it an expert can sbaer 200 sbeep
per day. The advantages claimed for the
''Silver" are that it is cheaper and simpler,
and more easy to handle effectively than the
"Wolseley."" There seems good foundation
for the statement that these new machines
will add several millions annually to the
pastoral revenue of Australia, containing as
that country does, over 100,000,000 sheep.
It has been demonstrated that the tar boy is
no longer needed, that the expert shearer
may now be rivalled by the cheap, ordinary
station hand after a short experience, and
most of all, that a permanent superiority in
length and evenness of staple is attained,
producing a heavier clip at a higher pound
age than was possible in the days of hand
hear.
Paper Pillows.
The latest fad in England is paper pil
lows. The paper is torn into very small
pieces, not bigger than the finger nail, and
then put into a pillow sack of -drilling or
light ticking. They are very cool for hot
climates, and much" superior to feather pil
lows. The newspapers are printing appeals
for them for hospitals. Newspapers are not
nice to use, as they have a disagreeable odor
of printer's int; but brown or white paper
and old letters and envelopes are the best.
The finer the paper is cut or torn, the lighter
it makes the pillow.
