THE PITTSBTJEG DISPATCH, THURSDAY, JANUARY 23, 1890.-
'f MATH AT ECONOMY.
Jonathan Lenz, One of the Pioneer
Organizers of the Society,
DIES AFTER A BRIEF SICKNESS.
He Had Attained the Patriarchal Age of
ighty-Two Tears.
CHAKACTEKISTICS OF THE DEAD MAN
The death of Jonathan Lenz. co-trustee
with Jacob Henrici of the Kconomite
Society, leaves bnt one pioneer of the or
ganization alive. The illness of Mr. Leuz
was of short duration, he having been pros
trated by influenza less than ten days ago,
the disease developing into acnte pneu
monia. Though the junior trnstee, Mr.
Xienz had passed the ordinary life boundary
by 12 years, being in his 83d year. "With
the exception of President Henrici, Mr.
Lenz it the last of the original Harmonites
who, with George Rapp, organized the
society known for many years past as the
couomite.
Though gentle in demeanor and ycry tol
erant toward the world at large, Mr. Lenz
was a firm adherent to the principles of tbe
unnatural state of society which has reached
its full development at Economy. The
writer had a conversation with him last
summer, in which the venerable ascetic
strongly condemned the views of the author
of "Looking Backward," as he, Lenz, held
that unsullied socialism could only exist
when based on the faith taught by Jesus
Christ. He said a true Economite only
lived and labored to prepare the world for
the second advent of Christ. He was a man
of generally broad views and liberal educa
tion, but he could not be persuaded that
felicity could befoundedonauy substructure
of human contrivance.
A KEnTEAIi DIGNITY.
He was born in Germany. Notwithstand
ing bis antiquated style of apparel, Mr.
Lenz was clothed with a natural dignity
united with benevolence, apparent at a
glance, that enforced respect wherever he
went. He had charge of the agricultural
and general home interests of the society,
while Mr. Henrici looked after its concerns
where they came in contact with the great
outside world. The habits of the Econo
xnites are not calculated to make them gen
eral business men, able to swing the inter
ests of $15,000,000 to 520,000,000 worth of
property, real, personal and mixed, with
success, but they have had the rare good
sense to trnst them to a few, and discrimina
tion as well as faith seems to have been
called into play in selection. Of the varions
enterpri .-es successfully conducted by these
representatives, it is unnecessary to speak,
they are well known.
A NETV LEADEB NEEDED.
Miss Gertrude Bapp was a valuable coun
selor, and the past year has been memora
ble for the demise of pioneers in the institu
tion. The venerable triumvirate, some
months ago, feeling that the sands of lite
had run quite low, decided that some one
of vigor should be chosen to fill the gap
which death was certain soon to make, and
going about the work as did "the Eleven."
tbe lot fell on George Kirschham, and he
was numbered with the three pioneers. He
was soon after killed by a gas explosion,
and Mr. Ernest "Woelfel was chosen to take
his place.
It is related bj Mr. Lenz that he once,
nearly 40 years ago, fell in love with a
young lady in the upper oil country and his
love was reciprocated, but that after many
expostulations and SDiritual wrestlings, Mr.
Henrici brought him back to tbe fold, and
that the experience so affected Mr. Lenz
that his friends had him confined in Dix
tnont for several months until the fervor of
passion abated.
There is no indication that the society, as
a. body, proposes to die and leave its millions
to the State. There can always be found
plenty of people in the world, but not of it,
to fill the depleted ranks, and they are like
to find entrance easy.
La Grippe A Few Pointers.
Persons wbo have a cold are much more
likely to take the influenza or so called, la
grippe.
It is much more severe when accompanied
by a cold.
The most critical time is when recovering
from the disease, as slight exposure will
often cause a relapse and that is almost
certain to end in lung fever or pneumonia.
The feet should be kept dry and warm,
the body well clothed and care used to avoid
exposure.
The bowels should be kept regular and
persons physically weak should take qui
nine to keep up the vitality.
With these precautions and a free use of
Chamberlain's Cough Bemedy a prompt re
covery is reasonably certain. Tbat remedy
is unequaled for a severe cold and this
disease requires precisely the same treat
ment. For sale at 50 cents per bottle by E. G.

Snfety Secured.
A fact came to our knowledge a few days
ago. A man had been keeping in his home
nearly 51,000 in gold. He was more fortu
nate than many who do snch a foolish thing.
Such people, who 'do not have faith enough
in banks to deposit their money in them, or
who do not make use of the protection offered
by The Sate Deposit Company Of Pittsburg
in its burglar-proof vaults, are very likely
to have their valuables taken by robbers,
who are ever on the alert There is always
a recognized necessity in every thickly set
tled neighborhood for a place where valua
bles of all kinds can be stored away with
saftety. To meet this want in our commu
nity The Safe Deposit Company Of Pitts
burg was incorporated in 1867. This com
pany, thus established in our city more than
20 years ago, offers to the public a sure pro
tection in its burglar-proof vaults for the
safe keeping of bonds, stock certificates,
records of all kinds, silverware, jewelry and
all kinds of valuables. In view of the fact
that a great risk is run by everyone keeping
valuable articles in offices, and especially
in dwellings, it does seem to be the wise and
prudent thing to do to secure a safe or have
valuables stored away in the vaults of The
Safe Deposit Company Of Pittsburg. Safe
ty is thus secured, and at a small expense
in comparison with the risk of having valu
ables stolen by robbers or destroyed bv fire.
Think of these considerations and art ac
cordingly. SLAUGHTER IN JACKETS,

THE COLD WAVE.
Natural Gas Supply Almost as Low as the
Mercury School Children Nearly Frozen
Ont Probability of tbe Continuance of
the Chilliness.
About 7 o'clock yesterday morning the
mercury in the thermometer in the Signal
Service Office touched the 11 mark, and at
7 and 8 o'clock, when the stores were
opened, the clerks shivered and shook while
the janitors swore and fumed. Later in the
day reports commenced to come in from the
the suburbs, and housewives were telephon
ing their lords and masters that the gas had
gone out and the babies were freezing.
About 10 o'clock the gas in the Third
ward school, on Grant street, suddenly dis
appeared. The rooms soon became too cold
for the pupils to remain in their seats, and
the principal ordered the teachers to allow
them to put on their wraps and walk about
the rooms. The gas came on again about 11
o'clock, just alter tbe principal had decided
to dismiss the scholars, and the studies were
resumed. A number of iamilies in the
neighborhood of the school were without gas
at the same time.
The assistant general superintendent of
the Philadelphia Company, B. G. Gillespie,
when asked if an unusual number of com
plaints had been received, replied:
"There is always a scarcity of gas when
the weather suddenly becomes cold, but the
number of complaints we have received is
comparatively small. I expect, of course,
the people in the suburbs and some of the
mills may be somewhat inconvenienced
for a short time, but it is nothing
more than we expect at such a
time as this. Very often the scarcity of gas
is due to some local trouble like the freezing
up or breaking of a pipe. 'We have plenty
ot eas. but it alwavs contracts in verv cold
weather. "We will not know just how many
were without it entirely until the daily re
ports are handed in to-morrow morning."
The Equitable Gas Company, which sup
plies a large number ol mills along the
Allegheny river, had plenty of gas yester
day, and had received no complaints up un
til 4 o'clock in the afternoon.
The Signal Service officers stated that the
indications pointed to a continuation of the
present cold weather for several days at
ieast. The barometer is high, and there are
no signs of snow. A storm center is form
ing in the far Northwest, however, which
cannot possibly reach this vicinity for 48
hours.
Where Do All thn Pianos Go.
This question we are asked almost every
day. Our neighbors cannot understand
how it is that we send out so many pianos;
it is a constant stream coming in and going
out every day. The secret is explained by
our club or co-operative system our pianos
are sold before we get them. The demand
is so great that we are compelled to have
them shipped in large quantities to keep up
with our orders. A few weeks ago we con
tracted with the Everett Piano Co. to sup
ply a club of 350 with pianos. We got the
instruments so cheap, and they are such
bargains, that our club members cannot wait
on the weekly drawings, but are taking the
pianos home and paying for them. Some
all cash, some on a large tush payment down
and the balance on short time, others are
paying $1 per week and waiting on the
drawings. They will not have long to wait,
as we have already delivered almost one
third of the whole number contracted for.
This week we deliver a fine carved rosewood
case Cabinet Grand Everett Piano, to mem
ber No. 29, on payment of $1 per week.
Now, if you want a piano, don't miss this
opportuni.y. "We can arrange payments to
suit you, and have a few numbers not yet
taken, so call at once or send for circular to
