Details All Arranged.
THE PUBLIC MEETING LAST EIGHT
The meeting held last night in the First
Presbyterian Church, "Wood street, in the
interest of the International Sunday School
Convention, to be held here in Jnne, 1890,
was well attended. ' W. K. Jennings pre
sided. Mr. B. F. Jacobs, of Chicago, Chairman
of the International Executive Committee,
spoke earnestly in favor of Sabbath school
work. He urged that a greater interest be
taken in the Sunday school. The reason.he
said, vre have lost our hold on many of the
older boys and young men is because of
the large number of Christian men have
left the Sunday school; merchants
lawyers, business men and the like. A good
son would follow his father's example, and
if that example does uot lead him to the
Sunday school it is the father's fault The
boys, he continued, are not thoughtless, as
it has beett said. A boy will think, and if
you can control his thoughts you can control
his feet. He must be taught and must have
a teacher who cau think. The best and
brightest material is wanted for teachers.
AIT irrA-HfPT.il! TO FOLLOW.
Mentioning the Catholic Council at Balti
more, Mr. Jacobs said they had claimed the
whole world. He admired their earnestness
and push, but thought it would be well tor
Protestants to join issues. They could have
a religious trust irrespective of creeds, and
it was necessarv. We have been told of an
impending crisis at the close of the nine
teenth century, and it was time every Chris
tian combined. The International Conven
tion, he continued, will meet to hang up a
lliap of North America and pick out the
places needing their aid and go to work to
give it to tbem.
Toe wort: snouia oe pusnea over me
whole world. He referred to the McAIl
missions in France and pictured their needy
condition. They should be helped, and it
is desired to put an American Sunday school
back of every one of these schools in France.
Any Sunday school here can take this posi
tion by subscribing for the support of one,
and have it report to the American school.
In conclusion, he said, they want to place
Sunday schools in every part of the world.
LOCAL ORGANIZATION ACHIEVED.
At the finish of Mr. Jacobs' address, the

discussing Treasurer Bigelow's report,which
showed expenditures amounting to 9,682 68,
and receipts amounting to $8,197, making a
deficit of $1,385 68. The latter amount added
to the sum necessary to eo into the next
convention was fixed at $4,400. To meet
this, however, there are pledges amounting
to $4,700, so that the convention will meet
without being in debt.
The special object of the meeting of the
committee is to make arrangements for the
sixth triennial session of the convention to
he held here next June. That convention
will be attended by 1.200 delegates, and it

mittee on Transportation, which is to consist
of Messrs. J. D. Phipps, of Maryland; W.
A. Hartshorn, of Massachusetts; L. C.
Feake, of Toronto, Canada, and Ik Collins,
of Kentucky.
The committee then set to work and made
a general outline of the work to be-done by
the convention to be held in this city.
There will be a preliminary meeting on the
evening before the first day, and on the first
day short addresses will be made by the
delegates.
The second day will be taken up by the
report of the Executive Committee and a dis
cussion of primary work. In the evening
there will be a report of the Lesson Com
mittee and addresses on the International
lesson system.
The third day will be given to the consid
eration of the Executive Committee's report
and receiving money pledges from the differ
ent States.
Thequestion of fixing the time for'the'
world's convention will also be taken up.
There will be no outside or overflow meet
ings, as the desire is to have the delegates
in the ball as much as possible. The ad
dresses will be limited in time, and no set
speeches will be made.
TJNIFOBal NOBMAL WOBK.
A committee of five was appointed to
formulate a plan for uniform normal work,
the plan to be presented at the convention.
A'committee of three was appointed to in

the World's Fair, as soon at it is appointed,
urging that a suitable building be erected as
a place for the "World's Sabbath School Con

Committee, and they adjourned to go down

AGENT O'BRIEN YJ3RT BUST.
H la After Glade Ron Rooster Pushers, but
Attend to Many Minor Cue.
Agent O'Brien, of the Humane Society,
is certainly in for a decided war against
brutal sports. He secured the fining of
more than a score of men engaged in the
dog fight at McKee's Bocks. He has had
two men fined for the chicken fight at Oil
City on December 31, and is not through
yet with that case. To-day he will go to
"Warren, Pa., to investigate a chicken fight
which was held there December 20.
Yesterday Mr. O'Brien received a letter
from a gentleman in Glade Bun, "Warren
county, Pa., asking him to come to that
place and stir things up. The writer said
that the cocking main held in Glade
Bun on the Friday night before
Christmas was one of the most disgraceful
affairs ever known in that part of the coun
try. About 100 men and boys attended it.
The men who conducted the fighting were
from Oil City, Pleasantville, Titusville and
"Warren. Glade Eunisasmall town two
miles above "Warren, on the Allegheny
river, and the fight was held there to avoid
the "Warren police. The writer of the letter
says that the affair was conducted in a large
hall on the third floor of the Glade Bun Ho
tel, of which John Baldensperger is the pro
prietor. It is further charged that the pro
prietor rented his hall for the fight three
days before the occurrence for $10, and that
at'the fight he acted as doorkeeper. The ad
mission fee was f 2.
The racket was kept up all Light, and
about daylight broke up in a drimken row.
The citizens ot the town found the bodies of
six chickens lying on the street. They had
been thrown from the windows of the halL
Two of them were not quite 'dead.
Mr. O'Brien was given the names of sev
eral residents of Glade Bun who can furnish
him with information regarding the dis
graceful affair. At least 20 of the partici
pants are known.
Agent O'Brien spent the forenoon attend
ing some hearings before Mayor Pearson, of
Allegheny. Arthur Graham and his wife
were each fined $10 and costs for drunken
ness. Agent O'Brien threatened to take
their young son from them, but finally con
sented that it should be put into the care of
some rf Graham's relatives.
John Hnddow and wife were arraigned
for drunkenness and disorderly conduct.
They were lectured by the Mayor and di
charged, and Agent O'Brien told them that
if they were ever caught again in the same
condition he would feel it to be his dnty to
take their child from them.
At noon Mr. O'Brien went to Sharpsburg
to prosecute a complaint before Justice
"William Eobinson. The, wife of K. H.
Douglas, a bricklayer, had prosecuted him
for cruelty and neglect. The wife is very
ill with consumption and has four children.
She comes of a good family, her maiden
name having been Schad. She complained
that her husband, though he made good
wages, spent nearlv all his money for drink,
not giving her sufficient to live on. East
Sunday she was compelled to leave him and
go to the house of a sister, to procure enough
to eat. Douglas was arrested "Wednesday
evening and spent the night in the locknp.
Testerday he displayed penitence, took the
pledge and promised to be good. He was at
first ordered to be committed to court, but
afterward he was released on his own recog
nizance and the case held open, to see if he
will take care of his family better than he
has been doing.
DIRECTED TO GO SLOWLY.
The Mercantile Appraisers List for tbe
Cities Mar Not be Published.
The County Commissioners have been
directed by Auditor General McCamant to
co slowly in the matter of the publication
of the Mercantile Appraisers' list for the
cities, as he states that there is a doubt as to
whether there is warrant of lawfor its pub
lication. They are directed to withhold it
for the present year, or at least nntil further
notice.
County Commissioner Mercer seemed to
think that the list, outside of Pittsburg and
Allegheny, was to be published, but said
tbe matter would not receive attention until
further instructions were received from Har
risburg. The list outside the cities is a com
paratively small matter.
