Good Time Generally the Order ofthe Erenlnc Re marks Upon the Benefit of a Buaiaess Education. About 600 of Pittsburg' people gathered at the popular Curry College last evening to enjoy another of the annual holidaytide re ceptions for which the institution is famous. The attendance included many of the young men and -women sent forth to do battle with Ihe world, and the nature ortheir equipment was shown by the well-to-do and successful appearance ot the ex-pupils. Tho visitors after disencumbering them- ; fi Ki.caui laeir wraps entered me reception cnaniDer to the Tight of the staps and met the members of the faculty and the Board of Trustees, who were grouped about the room, which was decorated with potted plants A and flowers in luxurious profusion. The introductions were formal and were made $o gr. the ladies and gentlemen, who were arraved -in evening dress, the toilets of the ladies utiug particularly nanasonie in every case. I FACULTY A2TD TRUSTEES. The entire faculty of the university was oresent, as follows: Prof. J. C. Williams, President of the university; Mrs. J. C. , ."Williams, Prdf. Byron King and wife. Prof. Bcmit, wife and" daughter. Miss Jennie "Williams, Prof. Bowe and wife, Miss Portia Tickers, Prof. Wisman, Miss Mattie Dal xelL Miss Lizzie Brvan. Dr. E. M. Wood, Prof. Wis. McCurdy, Prof. E. H. Garber and wife, Prof. Simeon Bissell and wife, Mrs. Harmar Williams, Miss Margaret Alarlitt Douthett, "W. M. Stevenson. The following members of the Board of Trustees were present to assist in the pleas antries ofthe occasion: Colonel and Mrs. Herron, Dr. Swentzel, Itev. Dr. Cowan and wife. Dr. James W. Jfeely, A. P. Burchfield, Esq., Mr. J. C. Andrews, General A. L. Pearson, Dr. E. MAVood and Sheriff A. .. McCandless. A , member, whose other engagements precluded the possibility of being present, sent letters qr regret, accompanied by congratulations upon the great growth, enlarged scope aud increasing usefulness of the institution. ' THE RECEPTIOi? COMMITTEE. To the alert young ladies and gentlemen Of the Senior class of '90 was intrusted the pleasant duty of receiving the visitors and introducing them to the faculty and trus tees. Their thorough ease and self-possession left nothing to be desired in the performance , or their duties. The visitor was made to feel thoronehlv at home by the time the line of the received had been passed. It was a very pleasant gauntlet, and the visitors felt under obligations to the bright young ladies especially. . The names of the reception committee Srere as follows: Miss Jean Boobyer, Miss Slay Lacock, Miss Clara Smith, , Miss Hettie Schultz, Miss Alma Shafer, Miss Grace Haver, Miss Lillian Lytle, Miss Kate Dempsey, Miss Mabel Ignonrand Mr. Taylor, Mr. Carrier, Mr. George Camp bell, Mr. William Blair, Mr. Patterson and Mr. Kelly. IX A SOCIAL "WAT. Passing beyond the reception hall the way led through the offices into the College Hall, which was handsomely decorated with flags, evergreens, potted plants, flowers and young ladies. Though last the latter were far from leist, and they were surrounded by plenty of young gentlemen, the whole assemblage being in lull evening costume. Upon the stage was the lull orchestra of Toerge Bros., and very excellent music was discoursed during the entire evening. The orchestra was almost concealed by a mass of flowers and ferns. The floor was free from encum brances and waxed for obvions purposes. After the grand march had been prome naded by over 200 couples headed by the Faculty of the TJniversitv and the Board of Trustees, a semi-humorous 'address was de livered by Prof. Sadler, of Baltimore. Md., fcad of the famous Bryant and Stratton sys . tern of commercial colleges, in which the gentleman, who is a ready and apt .speaker, nlsrged tipon the..fsct that.merchants .now adays were apt to ask an applicant for a po- trition for his credentials from business college just in the same breath as for his . moral fitness. The old scheme of the raw country lad dropping into a big counting room and getting the fat of the land on account of a pair of bare feet, a rural Etamm..- and a bright face didn't go now adays. In fact, the speaker believed that it bad always been a little commercial fic tion. Men got positions nowadays by show ing that a gbod business education was and must be a fact capable of demonstra tion. He thought that commercial educa tion was really the mainspring of success for eithe young men or women, especially since women were so rapidly taking a prominent place in the commercial world. Prof, Sadler 'was heartily applauded when his brief' ad dress was concluded. IN A MUSICAL WAV. Several capital songs were sung by Prof. Eerriot, ot Chicago, a well-known vocalist ot the AVindy City. His accompaniments were played by Prof. Simeon Bissell. Music by Toeree's filled out the evening very pleasantly. At the beginning of the exer cises a brief and pleasantly-worded address of welcome was made by Prof. J. C. "Will iams, President of the University. The arrangements were most admirably made and throughout the evening there was so confusion nor crowding, although the capacity of the roojn was taxed to the full est extent It was the plcisantest annual reception in the history of the university. The Safest Shopping Street In Pittsbnrg. Very recently an element of danger has been added to shopping in Pittsburg.and those who are thoughtlnl of their wives, mothers, sisters and daughters have looked with some alarm to the increasing number of cable cars in the already crowded and narrow streets of Pittsburg. There is one street, however, that is not troubled in this respect, and every day it is becoming more popular as a shopping thoroughfare. We mean Smithfield street. To those of our read ers who have fractious or lively horses we commend this precaution as wise and nec essary. Among the jewelers the most cen trally located to be reached from all points is Hardy & Hayes', at S29 Smithfield street. To the residents of Allegheny, the most di rect route is to drive via the Suspension or Seventh street bridges and then directly up Virgin alley. This gives a direct and en tirely safe drive and brings one within two doors of the store. Their stock is complete in every particular and we have heard many friends say the stock they carry is one of the most diversified in the city. In novelties for men all sav thev have the largest line in the city. They have lust opened a large, new as sortment received for late buyers. By call ing.you will be satisfied at Hardy & Hayes, Jewelers, 529 SmithBeld street. They are open every evening. Big Crowds After the Daisy. Yesterday was the first day we placed our Daisy overcoats on sale at $X0. They caught on at once. Thousands of people came to see what we meant by a Daisy. Not one left without purchasing one of these excel lent overcoats. They sold at sight The Daisy is an all-wool small-ribbed cassimere overcoat in three shades blacfc blue and brown silk-faceh or plain, silk sleeve lining, with cloth or silk velvet collar and richly lined throughout. Merchant tailors would charge $2S to $35 for the same coats. Our price for the Daisy is $10 to-dav. P. C. C. C, car.
