Mr. Israel.
J. "Kaufmann & Bros, last night celebrat
ed the completion of the addition to their
mammoth building on the corner of Filth
avenue and Smithfield street, a building
containing on its six floors and acres of space,
over 1)1,000 square feet, half a million dol
lars' worth of merchandise; celebrated an
enterprise which from a very small begin
ning 21 years ago has crown to surprising
proportions through the energy of its pro
prietors, and their judicious system of ad
vertising bringing Sack compound interest
on the many thousands of dollars devoted to
telling the public what the proprietors had
to give them.
in 1868, J. Kanfmann came to this city a
penniless youth, bnt through industry and
sagacity, in a few months succeeded in
establishing a little store on the corner of
Twentieth and Carson streets, Southside, a
store which served its purpose for that day,
but which to-day could all be put
into one of the 'mammoth windows of
the present concern. By degrees they
pushed their business regardless of expense,
until to-day they have buyers scattered
over the entire commercial world, in ion
don, Paris, Berlin, etc, and themselves at
tend personally to the business in New
York, and take the entire outpnt of New
England factories. At home they have 300
employes, and their weekly payroll is about
$4,500, and the firm to-day, Jacob, Isaac,
Morris and Henry Kaufmann, can com
placently look back over the numerous
trials in reaching their present attitude,
feeling that their suocess is the reward of
merit and hard work.
Three dynamos, furnishing hundreds of
electric lights last night, showed the palatial
establishment to the beEt advantage, while
tbe two steam power elevators relieved the
crush that could not find free passage on the
capacious stairways. These were decorated
artistically and gorgeously with flowers, and
a magnificent floral representation of a bell
added, gave a beautiful tropical appearing
vista, that could only be thoroughly appre
ciated by a view from the third story.
Notwithstanding the inclement weather
people attended by the acre, and every floor
was crowded. The Cathedral Band was in
' attendance and will be to-night.
A. Israel, Esq., was the orator of the oc
casion. After referring to the occasion
which brought out the crowd Mr. Israel told
of the exertion of Kaufmann Bros., which
had produced such grand results, and con
gratulated them on the success of their
endeavors, and the audience agreed with
them.
"Ladies and gentlemen,we are glad to say
that we all reioice in the prosperity of the
men who have built this business, and hope
for a continuance of their prosperity," he
said. "Fortune seems to have smiled on
them. Their energy and business ability
have placed them among the leading citi
zens of this city, and it is such energy that
has placed this city among the leading
cities of the land. Five years ago this city
was sleeping sufiering lrom commercial
lethargy. Then the principal corner
of the principal streets of the
city, in the heart of the business
community and opposite the postoffice.was a
block that was a standing disgrace a block
composed of old shanties and rookeries.
The men whom we to-night congratulate
and whose success we celebrate, took hold,
and have erected on that spot, which was an
eyesore, this beautiful business structure,
one of tbe most beautiful and extensive of
its kind retail in the United States; one
of the most beautiful in the world. It is
through the enterprise of snch men as Kauf
mann Bros, that a State becomes
greater; that a nation becomes
great. It is the activity and
undying energy of such men as tbe Kanf
mann Bros, that all will join in congratu
lation upon this success, and know that
with such men Pittsburg will become great.
"This building is stocked from cellar to
housetop with clothing by Kaufmann Bros.,
tndJ-tber will not only treat you to this
beanfllul sight, buVwill sell yon their goods
at the least profit consistent wathi sound
business principles. They will not rest
content with present triumph; it is not
their nature, butwill continue to go forward.
TVe congratulate them tbatnotonly have they
erected the most beautifnl building in this
section, but hope their success will go with
them through life and know no end and the
people o! Pittsburg this night extend them
trjeir heartiest wishes for success. I thank
you for your attention. Loud applause.
Among distinguished people present were
City Controller Morrow. John N. Neeb,
"William H. Beif, of the Times; Mr. Campe,
of the CftronicZe Telegraph; W. A. Magee,
Josiah Cohen, Isidore Coblens and Hon. A.
C. Robertson.

Not an Electric Killing.
PmsBUEO, Pa., December 16, 1889.
To the Editor of Tbe Dispatch:
Beferring to the horse which is alleged to
have been killed by electricity upon our
Observatory Hill branch, the Federal Street
and Pleasant Valley Passenger Railway
Company have this to say, after a earful
investigation:
First The horse did not step upon the
rail at the time of its death.
Second There was not sufficient elec
tricity in the rail at any time to injure the
horse, even if it had stood upon it.
Third We bave had the horse thoroughly
examined by veterinary experts, who certify
that certain diseased conditions of its
stomach was tbe actual cause of its death.
Fourth These rails have been in use on
Federal st. lor years, and if it were true that
there is in them sufficient electricity to kill
a horse, our road would be lined with
dead horses. Besides there are now in
operation 179 street railways in the United
States using the overhead wires as a motive
power, and neither man nor animal has as
yet been killed thereby. The wild state
ments now in circulation will seem absurd
when people get better acquainted with
electricity as a motive power.
Fifth We would cheerfully pay for this
horse if conclusive evidence were shown that
our electric current had killed it
Respectfully yours,
D. F. Hknet, President.
