Bradfobd, December 6. An explosion
of dynamite mt Howard Junction to-day-killed
G. Mahretla and D. Tattle, Italians,
aged respectively 25 and 28 year, and seri
ously injured G. Margasita, a younjr Hun
garian, aged 18 years. Seventy-five men
are engaged In construction work on the
new Bradford and Jobnsonburg Kailroad.
The three unfortunates -went to a shanty to
tbaw out frozen dynamite cartridges for
blasting purposes. 'While engaged in this
work, a terrible explosion took place, blow
ing the chanty to splinters and throwing the
men quite a distance.
Tattle was killed instantly and 'Mahretta
died in a short time. Both men were ter
ribly maugled, Hahretta's body being ,torn
limb from limb. M&rganita was blown into
the air and etferv stitch of his clothing
stripped from his 'body, nothing but his'
snoes nemg left on bis person, ut is oaaiy
cut and bruised, but will recover.

Johnstown, December 6. The jury in
the Carter-Mathews murder case rendered a
-verdict of guilty in the firstdegreejthis after
noon. The jury was polled and each juror
responded "guilty in the first degree." A
motion in arrest of judgment and for a new
trial was entered. ChBrles Carter, the con
victed murderer, is 25 years of age. He
came here two vears ago from "Winchester.
Va. The murder was the result of quarrel
mhanl & white eirl named Emtna Dunn, with
whom Carter and John Mathews, both col
ored, were infatuated. ;
On the evening of November I they met
on the street and Carter at once opened fire
on .Mathews. Two bullets took effect in
Mathews' body, causing death in a few
hours. It is said Carter had a brother who
was hanged in Pittsburg a few years ago,
and that he has two brothers still in that
city.

Sentenced to Lobs Terms on the Charge of
Attempted Burglary.

Beaver Faixs, December 6. Edward
Nelson and Frank Frazer pleaded guilty of
attempted burglary this afternoon, and were
sentenced by Judge 'Wickham. The former
was given three years and nine months, and
the latter three years and ten months in the
" Western Penitentiary. They are the persons
who were arrested at Bochester some week.s
ago while attempting to sell a lot of postage
stamps.
Upon them were found several revolvers,
knives and extra clothing, evidently stolen.
They were locked up, and the same night
' escaped and attempted to force an entrance
to Butler & Jackson's clothing store, when
thev were captured by Officers Lazarus and
Brooks. Nelson is 19 years old, and claims
to5 from New York City. Frazer is 24
years of age, and gives Boston as his home.

making a searching investigation at to the
cause of the accident on the Southwest
Junction on 'Wednesday, when the day ex
press collided with a freight Daniel
"Williams, the operator at the block, has
been indefinitely suspended, and Henry
"Wisethe track boss, who had a number of

switch, and who himself was off duty, has
been temporarily suspended.
The switch that caused the accident is an
automatic one, and it is believed that it did
not go back into its position after the
Southwest passenger train, an hour before,
passed over it

A Duel Whh Swent According to the Rales

Pomona, Cal., December C A duel
was fought near this city on Tuesday even
ing in strict accordance with the code. The
affair was kept secret, bnt notwithstanding
the care exercised to keep it from the public
the facts came out. Since October last two
prominent young men from Pomona Harry
Lucas, formerly of Louisiana, and Herbert
Priestly, both aged 19 years have been
rivals for the hand of a young lady of ex
cellent family. They have had frequent
quarrels, and recently came to blows.
Finally Lucas challenged Priestly to fight
with Spanish rapiers. The challenge was
accepted, and the two men met on the ball
grounds.
Lucas, who is both wiry and quick, and a
practiced fencer, was quickly seen to be the
better of the two. The arrangements were
for three minute bouts. At the end of the
second bout, when Priestly had been cut iu
the breast and head nnd twice in the shoul
der, the seconds became alarmed and stopped
tne fight. Priestly's wounds wero dressed
and he was taken away from town. Lucas
has also disappeared. The seconds are
here and known, but no arrests have been
made. The young men are of good lamihes
and the story of the fight has caused mush
excitement.
DEATH FROM COAL GAS.
A Small Heating Stove Cnuied tbe Death
of Tiro Women.
Chicago, December 6. This morning
Mrs. Anderson, who lives in a tenement
house at 868 Gross avenue, together with
Mrs. Olina Knudson, heard a strange noise
in the room of the latter, and, supposing
that it was caused by sickness, tried to gam
admittance to her apartments. Finding the
door locked, and, receiving no
answer from within, Mrs. Anderson
called in a neighbor who pried open
the door. Lying on the bed were Mrs.
Knudson and a Miss Mary Lee, a young
lady who has been visiting at the house
from Milwaukee, both in an unconscious
condition. A strong odor of gas permeated
tbe room, which escaped from a small heat
ing stove. All the windows and doors in
the room were tightly closed.
A physician was promptly called but
Miss Lee Bad expired before medical aid
could be given. Mrs. Knudson remfined
in an unconscious condition nntil this
evening, when she also died. The coroner
has held an inquest in both cases, tbe jury
finding a verdict ot accidental asphyxiation
by coal gas escaping from the stove.
AN OCEAN RECORD BROKEN.

Pacific Mail Company's new steamer China
arrived from Hong Kong and Yokohama
this morning, making the voyage from the
latter port in 12 davs and 11 hours, thus
beating all trans-Pacific records.
The best time previously made between
Yokohama and San Francisco was 13 days
and 14 hours, and between Yokohama and
Vancouver 13 days and 6 hours.

Mkadvhvle, December 6. A.W. Sipps,
of Cooperstown, Pa., was arrested here to
. day for burning tbe Harmonsburg Cheese
Factory, near this city. The building,
which was owned by Sipps and was insured
for 325, was fired about 1 o'clock this morn
ing and totally destroyed.
An hour later officers with lanterns were
trailing a fresh bnggy track which led from
this city to the factory and back, and before
daylight Sipps was in jail. The evidence
against him is very strong.

biggest business transaction of the year in
this city was consummated last nicht by the
Barr Cash and Package Carrier Company
of this place, and Sampson Store Service
Company, of 2Tew York. The stock of the
first named company was sold to the New
York concern for 5200,000.
The negotiations have been on for nearly
& year, during which time there has been
some litigation about patents and a damage
suit for $150,000 for libel brought by the
Sampson people, bnt the preliminary steps
of this suit were decided against the Samp
son Company. Samuel Barr. the inventor,
gets 8300,000.

Hiss Lizzie "Wiseman purchased an ounce
of arsenic, stating to the druggist that she
intended to use it for rats. Sue- stepped
across the street to the home of a relative
and took nearly all of it
When asked what the had been doing the
confessed to having taken it, and was given
an emetic, but her life could not be saved.
She had been disappointed in lovs and the
act was doubtless due to temporary insanity
induced by worry. She was a modest, retir
ingTrirl, and of good family.
