'TflE BIDS HELD OVER FOE AWHILE
A Caution to Contractors Who Are Aniicia
to Put Wort at low Figures.
THE DEPAETMEKT OP AWAEDS AHEAD
After a long interval of suspense, the De
partment of Awards met yesterday after
soon and approved a number of street im
provements and setter contracts. The most
important subject of discussion (being the
heaviest contract for street improvements
taken in hand for some time) was the grad
ing, paving, curbing, sewering and build
ing a retaining wall along the bluff below
Grandview avenue in. the Thirty-second and
Thirty-fifth wards. The ground under dis
cussion is about two miles in length, extend
ing from 'Wyoming street to Oneida, and the
present rainy weather, which is tearing the
real estate away from beneath the feet or
foundations of the property holders, natural
ly makes them anxious. The sidewalks along
the bluff are particularly dangerous after
dark, in many places the hand rail being
totally cnt away, and liability to accident
being imminent. One of the property
owners on Grandview avenue cited last
evening the case of a woman, who fell over
the mutt a few months ago at night ana re
mained with a broken limb some CO feet
down until being discovered next morning,
as a proof of the dangerous condition of the
street.
MA2TT BIDS, BUT HO A"WABD.
2o award was made yesterday, although
bids were opened from Booth & Flinn,
Martin Jovce, Sloane & Mcllwaine, 21c
Cormick & Moran and H. C. Howard.
There were so many calculations to make
and the bids were so nearly alike that, on
motion of Mr. Bigelow, they were referred
to the clerk for tabulation and the award
will be made at a future meeting. "Without
making a close examination ot the figures,
it appears that .Martin Joyce is the lowest
bidder, though the clerk's calculations may
show to the contrary. The lollowing
awards were made:
pipe sewer on Reed street, 15-lnch. 82 per
foot: manholes, X25 eacb; catch basins, $26 each;
to J. 6. Shafer. Pipe sewer on Willingford
street, 15-lnch, $1 la per foot; manholes, $35:
catch basins. 60; to H. C Howard. Pipe
sewer on Kirkwnod street, 15-inch. SI 48 per
foot; manholes, $35; catch basins. 65; to Ott
Bros. Pipe sewer on Cypress street, 15-lnch,
(1 SS; manholes. $37: catch basins. $45: to Eagen
A McQnalde. Pipe sewer on Grazier street,
from Novelty to Mnrtland streets, 15-inch,
$1 55; manholes. $37; catch basins, $40; to G.
Collins. Pipe seweronCornetstreetfromJones
Sroperry to Maurice street. 15-inch, 1 3S: man

Pipe sewer on Lowry street, from Second ave
nue to Monongahela river. 15-mch, $1 33: man
holes, $37; catch basins, $45; masonry, $10 50; to
Eagen & McQuaide. Pipe sever on Maurice
street, 15-inch. $1 67: 18-lcch, $1 81; manholes,
$40: catch basins, $65: to Eagen & McQuaide.
Grading ot Neville street to Amberson avenne
to George Eagen at 29 cents per square yard.
Boardwalk on Industry street, from Almigton
To Amanda streets, arid boardwalk: on Cohasset
Street, from Grandview avenne to Pawnee
street, to John King & Co, at 0 cents per
lineal toot for steps, walks and platforms.
A PfcBCEDENT AND A WABXTXG.
As in all courts of power to distribute,
the Department of Awards had a case yes
terday to serve as a precedent. Ott
Bros, were bidders on the Cypress street
sewer contract; but when the meeting com
menced business Charles Ott, who was in
the Council chamber lobby, asked permis
sion to withdraw his bid on account of the
fact that since he had banded it in he had
discovered the figures were placed too low.
This was refused, as he was told that a man
putting in contracts for such work should
consider beforehand what he was doing, and
be careful of his own interests as well as
those ot his bondsmen. After the bid was
presented and received it could not be re
called. Mr. Ott felt very much aggrieved over the
matter, and expressed himself warmly, say
ing it was unfair to hold any man to a con
tract made through a confessed mistake, and
upon the face of which it was apparent he
would lose money. The ruling in the case
was made final, however; but, to the great
relief of Mr. Ott, when the bids werenpened
it was discovered that Eagen & McQuaide
had made a much lower bid than he had.

THE CHILDREN'S HEROES.
Bluebeard, Jr., and a Few of Its Thousnnd
Wonders.
No one should miss the novel features of
"Bluebeard, Jr.," the operatic spectacular
extravaganza, which begins an engagement
at the Grand Monday night. The New
Tork Herald, the World and other metro
politan journals, in lauding the entire per
formance, make special reierence to "The
Children's Heroes," "The Old "Woman Who
Lived in a Shoe With Her Children" and
"The Little Lords Fauntleroy." These are
impersonated bv 40 little ones. It is the
most attractive exhibition of juvenile talent
ever witnessed. The ballet in "Bluebeard,
Jr.," is very large. There are 60 coryphees
and three premieres. Seats are now selling
for the engagement.

A QUESTION WELL ANSWERED.
In Whet Respect Is Chamberlain's Couch
Remedy Better Than Any Other
TO TTOJi TELL YOU.
It is the only remedy that will liquefy the
tough, tenacious mucus and render it easy
to expectorate.
It is the only remedy that will cause the
expulsion of mucus from the air cells of the
lungs.
It is the only remedy that will counteract
the effect of a severe cold, and greatly miti
gate if not effectually cure the cold within
one day's time. To do this it must be used
as soon as the first symptoms of the cold ap
pear. 1
It has been clearly shown in thousands of
instances, that Chamberlain's Cough Bem
edy will cure a severe cold in less time than
any other treatment
It is the only remedy that will invariably
prevent croup, which makes it one of the
most valuable medicines yet discovered in
this or any other country.
It is the only remedy that has cured
thousands of cases of croup without a single
failure.
It is the only remedy that will prevent all
dangerous consequences from whooping
cough.
It is pleasant and safe to take. There is
not the least danger in giving it to children
in large and frequent doses, which are al
ways required in cases of croup and some
times lor whooping cough.
It is put up in large bottles for the price.
Manv persons who have used it for years
and fenow from experience its true value,
say that a CO cent bottle of Chamberlain's
Cough Beniedy will go further toward cur
ing severe colds and do more real good than
a jl bottle of any other cough medicine they
have ever used.

Leeehborg's Great Calamity.
The above headings show our readers the
recent terrible ravages of fire, this being the
time ot the year for terrific conflagrations.
You maylook for them, as they are sure to
come. Would it not be well, then, to look
to your books, valuable papers, and treas
ured mementos, and see that you have them
all put away in a good place in case of fire.
No other firm can offer you better protec
tion than the well-known firm of the Barnes
Safe and Lock Company, who are the sole
manufacturers of the now justly celebrated
Barnes Safe. We have just received a tele
gram from one of onr representatives that all
our make of safes came out of the fire in the
best of condition and the contents all saved.
We also received a telephone message
from Leechburg, Pa., this morning that the
Barnes Safe is again on the top. Such
quick news as this shows the reputation of
the .Barnes bate.
If you are thinking of purchasing a safe
buy no other than a "Barnes," and the only
place you can get this make of safe is at the
office and works or the Barnes Safe and Lock
